It depends on your career goals. GATE offers more options for engineering students. It is an all-around examination. You can go for MTech, PSUs, MS, and FRM. If you want more options, GATE will be better for you.

If you want to do an MBA, after graduation, CAT will be the better option. Almost all top B-Schools accept CAT scores for MBA.

CAT and GATE being different from each other cannot be compared. As they both have their individual purposes. CAT is for MBA aspirants and GATE is for selection in post graduation levels of Engineering, Architecture, Technology.

Here are some facts about both of them:

CAT:

  • CAT aspirants will be able to get admission to IIM colleges to pursue their MBA programs.
  • They will be trained in all the high-standard business management skills from the best business faculty of India.
  • They can get admission into top Business Schools for the MBA/PGDM course based on their CAT score.
  • They will have exposure and a great amount of knowledge throughout their program.
  • They can expect a minimum salary package of INR 7 to 8 LPA at the beginning of their career.

GATE:

  • Candidates who are seeking admission in Post Graduate Programs or Doctoral (Ph.D.) from reputed colleges of India like IIT, IISc, NIT, IIIT, GFTI, IIM, etc. go for GATE.
  • They will also be eligible for various government scholarship/assistantship programs.
  • Many Indian PSUs undertake their recruitment process by offering GATE candidates an attractive job, based on their scores.
  • They can also apply for higher studies in countries like the USA, UK, Germany, etc.
  • They can opt for jobs like Assistant Professor in reputed institutes or become Scientists in the area of interest, etc.

It must be clear from the points that both CAT and GATE exams are best in their own way. Candidates willing to go for corporate jobs must choose CAT, while those looking for a technical career can opt for the GATE.
