Why do people prefer IIT Bombay over IIT Madras?

If you are considering which IIT to attend, you might want to know why people choose IIT Bombay over IIT Madras. While my reasons may not be the same as everyone's, here are some common ones:

Geographical stereotypes: Many people from North Indian states tend to have a negative bias towards IIT Madras, while people from South Indian states often have a similar bias towards IIT Delhi. However, IIT Bombay's neutral demographic attracts people from both North and South India.
Reinforcement bias: IIT Bombay has seen an influx of toppers in recent years, creating a herd effect among students with relatively lower ranks and future candidates.
Cool quotient: Due to its location in Mumbai and the portrayal of a cool aura associated with it in popular culture, IIT Bombay has become a popular destination for people who seek a change after years of hard work to get in.

Apart from that, random rankings or even MHRD rankings have little effect on student perception. Placement statistics also play a minor role in the decision-making process since every IIT has similar placement records (although IITK has slightly better placements than IITB).

People tend to choose IIT Bombay over IIT Madras because of the domino effect. A friend of mine chose IIT Bombay because of his teacher’s advice. Other than this, IIT B is also known for its cosmopolitan culture which is not the case at many other IITs.

Moreover, the fests that happen at IIT Bombay like Mood Indigo as well as the Techfest are some of the biggest ones in Asia. Many are also of the opinion that the teaching here is better than other IITs.

Another plus point is that the number of companies visiting IIT Bombay is much more than other cities in our country. Placement-wise, IIT B is therefore ahead of others.

Lastly, the city itself has an effect on student choices. With its popular culture and people looking for a change from years of slogging, IIT B has become a top choice among students.
