Both IIT Madras and IIT Bombay are well-recognized academic institutions in India and are ranked amongst the top Engineering institutions as well. The choice between IIT Madras and IIT Bombay depends on you and other factors like the field of study you opt for, location preference, research opportunities, campus facilities, and your personal choices.

However, being a student of IIT Madras I can vouch for it to be a better choice.

  • IIT Madras has been ranked in 1st position in the category of overall engineering in the year 2023 by NIRF and in the year 2023 it was ranked 68th position by QS World University Ranking by subject (Engineering and Technology).
  • The average cost of pursuing a BTech course from IIT Madras is around INR 2.15 Lakh for the first year.
  • The placement for the year 2023 at IIT Madras was good with 80% of the students from BTech and 75% of dual courses being offered placements.
  • The median package of IIT Madras is INR 19.60 LPA and the average package is INR 22 LPA.
  • Some of the top recruiters are Apple, Google, Texas Instruments, Bajaj Auto Ltd, Cetak Ltd, Qualcomm, and more.

When it comes to selecting an IIT for your M.Tech program, it's important to keep in mind that there is no significant difference between the various IITs in terms of academics. While some individuals may adjust more quickly to the IIT culture, every M.Tech program is held to the same academic standards, regardless of which IIT you choose. Whether you're pursuing CSE, a CS M.Tech program is nearly as valuable as a CS B.Tech/Dual program in terms of job placement, regardless of the IIT you attend.

With this in mind, it may make sense for you to consider IIT Madras, particularly if it meets your criteria. While IIT Bombay may have a strong reputation, it's important to keep in mind that all IITs are of similar quality. As a CS postgraduate, the specific IIT you attend is not likely to make a significant difference in your career prospects. Instead, focus on finding a program that aligns with your academic goals and personal preferences.

Ultimately, the decision of which IIT to attend is a personal one and should be based on a variety of factors, such as program offerings, location, and student life. Don't feel pressured to choose a specific IIT just because it has a reputation for excellence. Instead, consider all your options carefully and select the program that is the best fit for you. With hard work and dedication, you can achieve success in any M.Tech program, regardless of the IIT you attend.

Studied at University of Mumbai (2019)

Both are very reputed colleges in India, So I might not be able to suggest which one you should go for. It is ultimately your decision. But as some of my friends studied in these institutes, I can give you a brief idea about both.

  • IIT Bombay is one of the most popular public engineering institutions in India.
  • Over the years, the institute has physically expanded in terms of campus to include more than 584 buildings covering a total area of over 2.2 square kilometers.
  • Currently, the institute has a total of 15 academic departments, 20 centers.
  • A school of excellence and four interdisciplinary programs are offered to candidates from India and abroad.
  • It has several times scored the highest rank based upon the academics.
  • It is also regarded as one of the best colleges for higher education in India.
  • IIT Madras is also an extremely popular public engineering institution in India.
  • It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance for India.
  • The campus of IIT Madras occupies around 617 acres of land.

Given below are the placement statistics:

Categories IIT Bombay IIT Madras
Placement Percentage 100% 95%
Highest CTC 45 LPA 40 LPA
Average CTC 16 LPA 14-15 LPA

As IIT is a brand in itself, several popular companies participate in their placement program. They also offer huge salary packages bagged by the most deserving students. These popular companies include Microsoft, Wipro, Capgemini, Google, TCS, Mindtree, Accenture, IBM, Cognizant, Apple, PwC, Morgan Stanley, KPMG and many more.

Thus, choosing any of the IITs among these two will give your career the right push.
