Both institutes are good at providing effective study materials, but there are other benefits available if you choose IIT Roorkee. They are:
- The Metallurgy department at IITR is the top in packing material research in India
- They are best for coding culture, machine learning, software, and so on
- You will have a culture of interdisciplinary study, and with the presence of the Center of Excellence - Nanotechnology, which is led by a Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, you will have the added advantage of working in the best labs.

My brother was in a similar dilemma when he had to choose between IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee for MTech in CSE. Eventually, he went for IIT Roorkee because his sole focus was to secure a job as soon as possible.
- As far as placements are concerned, IIT Roorkee is better both in terms of the number of companies visiting and the average package.
- The course structure of IIT Roorkee has been recently dated and it is much better than the older one.
- IIT Roorkee is in close proximity to Delhi so you can have a taste of the city life as well.
IIT Guwahati has better research opportunities and culture than IIT Roorkee.

To secure a 10 CGPA in IIT Roorkee, you will have to become a book nerd and adopt a no-nonsense attitude.
- Attend classes regularly and pay proper attention by sitting in the first row.

- Do your practicals excellent and submit the assignments on time.
- Approach the professors frequently to clear your doubts and develop a rapport with them.

What is the minimum duration for a PhD at IIT Roorkee for computer science?
The duration for Ph.D. in any department depends on the guide under which you are doing your research work. The average duration to produce good quality work with a competent supervisor is 4-5 years. If you get an A grade from all the examiners including foreign examiners, you don’t have to do the Thesis Viva. But a committee is formed by DRC to conduct a viva within IIT Roorkee.
Choosing the guide is a crucial matter for Ph.D. students as the same guide can help you get the degree very quickly while some guides can prolong the duration unnecessarily. Before finalizing your guide, conduct research on his credentials by talking to students he has dealt with in the past.
