Is IIT Bombay better than MIT?

AB
Advaith Bhaskar Posted On : March 18th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (2000–present)

When it comes to IIT Bombay, there are several similarities with the likes of MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and CMU. Here are some of the similarities between IIT Bombay and MIT:

  • Both have more than 100 student clubs, providing a plethora of extracurricular options.
  • Both have high academic standards and good libraries.
  • Both have excellent classrooms and department buildings.
  • Both have LAN speeds of over 800 Mbps.
  • Both have an entrepreneurial spirit, with IITB having a budding one while it was already existent in MIT.
  • IITB has an edge over MIT in terms of location since it's located in Mumbai, which is an Alpha + world city.

Even though IITB may not have the same level of infrastructure, funding, endowments, and research-oriented applicants as MIT, it is still considered to be one of the top institutions in India.

Moreover, it is worth noting that the order of prestige for degrees in MIT is Ph.D. > MS > BS, while in IITs, it is the opposite, with BTech/BS/Int.MS being ranked higher than MS(Math/Statistics)/MTech(CS) and PhD is ranked lower than MTech/MS in other disciplines.

India is still considered a developing country and its economy is not as strong as that of the United States. Due to this, it may not be fair to compare IIT Bombay to an institution like MIT, which is located in a country with significantly higher financial resources. However, it is important to note that IIT Bombay has made significant strides in education and research and has established itself as a premier institution in India.

PG

B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

The most amazing thing one can experience at IIT Bombay is the amazing student activities conducted throughout the year to maintain the lively environment of the campus. Students invest a lot of time and effort in these activities to give amazing results. The best part of the year is early December when these activities are at their peak due to the break between 2 semesters.

  1. A typical day in the week of December begins at 5 am when sports enthusiasts make their way to the sports field to practice for the Inter IIT Sports Meet.
  2. At 7 am you will see a group of tired students heading back to their hostels after working the entire night. They are organizers of Mood Indigo or Techfest, IITB's cultural and technical festivals respectively.
  3. By 9 am, students have had their breakfast and head to their respective departments for research projects during holidays.
  4. By 11 am, a mixed crowd will be seen handing out in the lounges and the student activity center. Some belong to a robotics competition for Techfest or come to a dance or a music group practicing for Mood Indigo.
  5. Towards the evening events like public lectures by scientists, debate practices, or quizzes are held. By 9 pm, the sports students are returning while student activity students are going to begin their work.
  6. By 11 pm, the hostels are quiet with only those who are working for fests staying awake. Some students can be seen at the canteen around 3 am munching midnight snacks. You can also spot final-year students dressed in formal walking here and there for campus placements.

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 20th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

No, there is no specific dress code at IIT Bombay and you are free to wear whatever you feel comfortable with. There are people who wear shorts, jeans and even pants. All you have to make sure of is that you are feeling comfortable and following the ethics.

One of my friends used to wear shorts throughout his college life and just wore jeans during his Mechanical workshops. So there are no boundaries to adhere to any dress code at IIT Bombay.

What is the course structure for M.Tech CSE in IIT Bombay/Delhi/Kanpur?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 20th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

MTech CSE in IIT Bombay, Delhi, and Kanpur comprises 4 semesters. The first and second are usually more hectic than the third and fourth mainly because 3 and 4 semesters just have practical work.

  • Semester 1: This semester has the most theoretical course. A student usually has 5 subjects of theory with 1 or 2 practical subjects,
  • Semester 2: The course curriculum is almost the same as that of semester 1 except that you can choose optional subjects depending on your interests. The 2nd semester is concluded with the viva of the entire theoretical course. In some branches, the viva takes place in the 3rd semester.
  • Semester 3: Towards the end of the previous semester, you are required to choose your guide. You can make an informed decision after checking the Professor's research work and matching it with your inclinations. In the 3rd semester, the project work commenced and you are required to select a title your research work will be based on. This semester is less hectic in comparison to the previous semesters as there is no theory and all you have to do is focus on your project work. In fact, I have seen people engaging in extracurricular activities during this semester.
  • Semester 4: This semester witnessed the placement seasons. Students are required to revise their theories and work on their respective projects. The questions asked by the panelists are usually related to your project work so it’s advisable to complete the project thesis.

Is it better to choose mechanical engineering at IIT Kharagpur or chemical engineering at IIT Bombay?

AB
Advaith Bhaskar Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (2000–present)

Getting into IIT is a big achievement only if you manage to choose the right branch for yourself.

You should analyze your ambitions and interests in a particular field and determine what you possibly imagine yourself to be doing in 5 years and then make an informed decision. Clarity of goals is extremely necessary to make this crucial decision of choosing a branch.

If you want to enter politics, then your branch hardly matters.

If you want to become an entrepreneur try to get an idea of the type of company you want to start

Basically, the choice of the branch is strictly a personal preference and cannot be objectively decided.
