How is the FPM in Finance at IIM Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode?

S
Sumit Posted On : January 3rd, 2023
Works at CDGI Indore (2013–present)

The FPM or the Fellow Program in Management is a full-time, residential, fully financially supported doctoral program of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode.

One of my friends joined IIM Kozhikode for research under financial accounting and control. According to her, the first year is full of rigor and a rigid curriculum. The FPM students share the curriculum with MBA students in the first year along with 3 FPM courses. The shared curriculum enables them to get in insight into various aspects of Management.

Like the first year, the second to has 3 semesters of 3 months each. This year comprises core FOm courses that give a depth understanding of methodologies and various econometric tools.

One major drawback my friend faced was the improper ratio between the number of courses and their period of study. The second year has 7 courses in each term which imply 12 days per subject which is insufficient. If we consider the 30 hours of classes per course, it means we attend classes for 210 hrs ( appr 8 days).

So IIM Kozhikode no doubt offers top-notch facilities and resources but you will have to prepare yourself to physically and mentally tire yourself to avail of them. FPM is an excellent course for research aspirants and not for casual learners.

How is IIM Ahmedabad different than IIM B, C, K, and I?

NS
Nishad Shah Posted On : November 21st, 2022
Studies at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (Expected 2023)

IIM Ahmedabad is indeed different from IIM B, C, K, and I in many aspects. Some of these aspects are it’s:

  • Discipline: when it comes to discipline, IIMA tops the list. The first year is a real-life challenge for students with hundreds of cases to study, group assignments and projects.

  • Case pedagogy: This is the highlight of the IIM Ahmedabad curriculum. IIMAs curriculum aligns with that of Harvard Business School. So it focuses more on problem-solving classes.

  • Architecture: IIMs pride lies in its heritage architecture. The red bricks surrounding the semicircular arches enhance the campus’ appearance tenfold.

  • Crowd: Without any doubt, the cream of students get into IIMA. This is because it has the highest cutoff.

  • Faculty: IIMA has top-notch faculty while some of them are IIM Ahmedabad alumni themselves.

IIM Ahmedabad is different from other IIMs in all these aspects. But what really sets it apart is its director Ravi Matthai and his systems cultivating accountability and autonomy.

Is it true that IIM Kozhikode selection criteria is biased in favour of students from Bengal?

BB

Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra

No, I don’t think IIM Kozhikode's selection criteria are biased in favor of students from Bengal. One of my uncles was on the interview panel a few years ago. He shared that shortlisting good candidates in Bangalore was a difficult task. Very few candidates were suitable enough to get selected. On voicing his concern for the same he was told not to worry as they will surely get more than enough candidates from Kolkata.

The conclusion is that whatever the reason, there is no special bias towards students from East India. It’s just that a lot of them clear CAT.

How is IIM Kozhikode for HR?

S
Sumit Posted On : November 15th, 2022
Post Graduate Diploma in Management from Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode

IIM Kozhikode does not offer any specialization degree. It offers a General Management or PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management). This is somewhat equivalent to an MBA. It doesn’t offer specific PGDM in Operations, Finance, HR, etc.

A variety of electives are offered in the second year. You may choose these on the basis of your interests and the career you wish to pursue.

The area offers a list of elective courses in which the students choose to have a career in the human resource field or develop their people management competency. Some elective courses are as follows:

  1. Legal Aspects of HRM

  2. Strategic HRM

  3. Some Recent OB Inputs for Enhancing Employee Performance and Humanistic Orientation in Workplace

  4. Compensation and Rewards Management

  5. Performance Management

  6. Leadership: Applied, Conceptual and Evolving

  7. Discovering Self

  8. Negotiations & Conflicts Resolution

  9. Management Consulting: Profession and Practice

  10. Managing Creativity

  11. Organization Change and Development

  12. Recruitment & Selection

Honestly, IIM Kozhikode is not a good option for HR. IIM Ranchi or SCMHRD are better options for the same.

Shall I join an IIM (Kozhikode, and newer ones) as a fresher directly after B.tech or should I take a job that is paying 4.5 LPA and take another go at the CAT/XAT after 2 years for A, B, C,L, FMS & X

Your question has a lot of variables to consider. This answer is unbiased as it can be. You should take a job after B.Tech. if you don’t have a strong resume. MBA is a professional course and welcomes experienced students who are well versed in academic performance, extra-curricular, and leadership/management experience.

If you lack in these areas my suggestion would be to upgrade your CV with skills and experience and give CAT another shot.

Keep in mind that your salary does not matter. Your achievements, crisis management and leadership skills you acquire while at work are more important. So if you are eyeing a high-end consulting job, take another go at CAT after gaining some more experience.

Some people tend to lose the motivation to prepare for CAT over the years. They can join IIM Kozhikode even as freshers.

IIM Kozhikode converted, should I forego the offer and give C (A/B no shot due to lower graduation score) another shot?

SG
Sahil Gupta Posted On : November 15th, 2022
PGDM Marketing, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (2017)

The answer depends on your percentage and work experience.

My personal suggestion would be to forego the offer and give IIM C another chance. This answer is based on personal experience so might not be applicable to everyone. Only forego the offer if:

  • You are confident that you can score around 99% again the next year

  • You add more work experience in the meantime

The key is that if you are foregoing the offer, use the entire year to acquire new skills, gain work experience and upgrade your CV. The decision will be your own. But make sure you accept the results next year without any regrets.

Are married students allowed to stay with their spouses at IIM Kozhikode? If not, then can they live outside the campus?

KP
Koustav Pal Posted On : November 15th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (2021)

Married accommodation is not readily available on campus, but on request, IIMK can facilitate locating suitable accommodation for students, in proximate areas.

My sister's batch had 2 married students. The institute assigned them an extra room for spouses in the women's hostel. If your roommates are okay with it, then your spouse can visit you for a few days.

Outside facilities are also available for spouses' accommodation. But then the transport expenses will have to be taken care of.

Between IIM Kozhikode and SPJIMR, which is better for an MBA in finance?

AM
Anuran Maiti Posted On : November 15th, 2022
MBA from S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR)

Both are among the top ten colleges in India. But if I had to make the decision for an MBA in finance, I would choose IIM Kozhikode because of the following reasons:

  • General Management over a specialized MBA

  • The best recruiters select more candidates from IIM Kozhikode than SPJIMR.

  • IIM Kozhikode has the upper hand when it comes to campus life. Although the fees of both institutes are somewhat similar, campus life is far better at IIM Kozhikode.

  • The IIM tag is in itself a credit.

SPJIMR has its own features. Located in the metropolitan area, SPJIMR has more connections than IIM Kozhikode.

Also, the placements for finance specifically are better than IIM Kozhikode. In fact, some companies don’t even get to participate in placement drives as the finance batch gets placed quickly.

So you will end up looking good in both institutes, just focus on your own convenience.
