Which is better: IT at NIT Surathkal or CSE at MNNIT Allahabad in terms of placement and environment?
Two of my close friends are studying at NIT Surathkal and MNNIT Allahabad respectively and often I hear them comparing their colleges based on some aspects.
- Environment: Both NITs have a well-maintained and lush green campus. NIT Surathkal has a slight advantage because of its private beach. So, if you love beaches and swimming NIT Surathkal is for you. NIT Allahabad offers scenic views at Sangam and students enjoy taking holy baths and spending evenings there.
- Faculty: MNNIT Allahabad are very friendly and often use their native language during lectures while NIT Surathkla professors are a nit professional and never use their native language in the classroom.
- Placements : The average package of IT at NIT Suratkal is INR 23.03 LPA while that of CSE at MNNIT is INR 27.07 LPA. MNNIT Allahabad has slightly better placements although NIT Surathkal has a better location.
- Food: It may be difficult to get non-veg food in Allahabad within the hostel premises. In NIT-S, there is no such restriction and a variety of non-veg food is offered.
Ultimately, the choice is yours!
What made NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal and NIT Surathkal to stand out best among all NITs?
There are several reasons why NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Warangal stand out the most among other IITs.
- These institutes have a rich legacy of almost half a century, a huge campus, and an elaborate alumni pool. Moreover. They enjoy excellent location which is a very crucial factor.
- As the Electronics and IT industry witnessed rapid growth, these institutes started becoming more and more popular among engineering aspirants.
- Their excellent brand value and the alumni network fetches industry-sponsored projects, and MoUs that are signed internationally with colleges.
- All the 3 aforementioned NITs have excellent placement scenarios thanks to their extensive alumni network and excellent connectivity. The location of these institutes in proximity to the IT hubs Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai attracts the best recruiters and opens excellent job opportunities.
- The 3 NITs have a strong Training and Placement Cell that helps the students prepare well for the interviews and invite the best companies.
- Additionally, the media has rightly portrayed all the big and small achievements of both faculty and student. Such kind of publicity helps these 3 NITs to stand out.
So, NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, and NIT Surathkal have many reasons to stand out and they deserved the hype.
Is it better to take CSE at NIT Surathkal or mechanical engineering at IIT-KGP?
The answer to this question depends mainly on your interest. Mechanical and CSE are diverse branches with diverse scopes. You need to analyze your own inclination only then can you make a sound decision. If you aren’t sure if the branch you can decide based on your future goals.
- If you want to land a job right after graduation that too a decent package, choose CSE over Mechanical because that branch has more job opportunities.
- If you are planning to pursue higher studies, especially in Physics-related courses, choose Mechanical. The branch is very intriguing and opens many doors to higher studies.
- If you value colleges over branches then choose IIT KGP as it’s way ahead of NIT Surathkal.
Lastly, I will advise you to opt for Mechanical only in first and second-generation IITs. So you can opt for NIT Surathkal or Trichy over third-generation IITs but not over first and second-generation IITs. Hope this clears my point.
What should I carry to NIT Surathkal hostel for the first time?
Here is a list of items that you may want to consider bringing with you to your hostel at NIT Surathkal:

NIT Surathkal offers good internet connectivity. It provides 24/7 internet facilities to different departments, faculty residences, and hostels. The central computing center of NITK serves this to the campus via LAN network and full-campus Wi-Fi. Internet speed is 4Gbpa lease lines of 1:1. - It’s not very difficult to maintain a good CGPA at NIT Surathkal provided that you attend the tests and exams regularly.
- Boys have almost no time restrictions and they can roam around the campus even late at night.
- Your wingmates become your best friends. They become a group with whom you hang out, have lunch, study, and share your life problems with.
- The mess food is hardly edible so most students eat at NC or Night Canteen beyond midnight. NC gets crowded during late-night football matches.
- You can join clubs and connect with like-minded people. They provide the right platform to grow technically and socialize.
- Students visit the temple and also sit next to the beach for hours on the weekend enjoying the peaceful and serene view. This is a great stress buster from daily activities.
So, NIT Surathkal offers an excellent campus life which is a blend of both freedom and academics. You can enjoy the freedom and maintain a good GPA with minimal effort.
Should I pursue IT in NIT Surathkal or CSE in SVNIT Surat?
Both NITK and SVNIT are tier-1 NITs and are excellent choices for engineering. Moreover both the branches are one of the most coveted branches so the choice of colleges is rather difficult here.
Go for CSE at SVNIT, if you are interested in CSE only. Usually CSE faculty is better than IT faculty. But if the tag of the college matters more then go for IT at NIT Surathkal as it has a better reputation than SVNIT in terms of job placement, alumni network, infrastructure, academics, start-up culture, etc. Here are a few additional reasons why you should choose NIT Surathkal
- The IT curriculum in NIT Surathkal is better than that of CSE in SVNIT on all parameters.
- The lab infrastructure and facilities are much better in NIT Surathkal. The curriculum is up to date.
- NIT Surathkal focuses on project-based learning. Every course has a practical aspect.
- Placement statistics of the IT dept in NIT Surathkal are also way better.
Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on your own preferences. However, I can say with certainty that choosing either colleges and branches will give you amazing results choices because CSE & IT are the most in-demand branches, combined with the tier-1 college tag.
Is joining mechanical engineering in IIT BHU or CSE in NIT Surathkal or CSE in DTU better?
Following the sheep mentality, many claim that it’s the branch that shapes your career and not your institute. Well, don’t let such people mislead you into believing your career is all set if you take CSE irrespective of the institute you belong to.
CSE branch is a major crowd-puller but trust me any branch taken up at IITs is better than other technical institutes. The branch is temporary but the tag you will be getting is permanent and will stay with you forever. Moreover, as for the placement opportunities that are better for CS, you can always opt for noncore placements and acquire coding skills.
The campus life and exposure provided by IITs is like no other so if you choose a technical institute other than IIT, you will be missing out on a good college life. Also, the culture of most IITs is driven towards coding so many IIT companies offer placements to students other than the CS branch based on your skills.
