SK
Surya Kumar Posted On : October 29th, 2022
M.Phil in English Literature, University of Calicut

A minimum of 55% in your UG degree is required to get admission to Calicut University MA English. There is an entrance exam where 50% of your score in the Entrance Exam and 50% of your score in your UG are weighted in determining your rank-list position.

Admission is based on an Entrance Test and Marks for the BA degree, as opposed to other colleges where admission is based solely on your BA score. It will give you a better chance if you work hard enough on the text.

It is strongly advised that you pursue your MA at Calicut University's English Department. The faculty is excellent and approachable, and there is some leniency in your optional papers.

What is the syllabus of the entrance exam for an MA in English at Calicut University?

AD
Amrita Deshpandey Posted On : October 29th, 2022
Research Scholar, M.Phil in English Literature, University of Calicut

Breaking down the MA English entrance exam pattern at Calicut University into different parts:

1. Questions with Multiple Choice Answers. There will be four options from which to choose. The questions will be of the same caliber as those found in UGC-NET examinations.

2. One-word answers, again of the UGC-NET type.

3. Short answers based on the BA syllabus

4. Essays based on the BA Syllabus, as well as General English Criticism and Theory. Beginning Theory by Peter Barry is a good place to start.

MCQs and one-word answers are extremely important because each question is worth one mark, and if you prepare well, you can easily gain a significant advantage from them. You must be familiar with the BA English course syllabus to get away with the questions asked in the entrance exam.

When it comes to study material, IGNOU definitely provides the best. The course is lucid, well-written, and informative and contains a summary of all important details. The quality of the study material makes it possible for you to solely rely on it and give exams.

Is selective IGNOU BA and MA political science sufficient for political science optional in UPSC?

PD
Prithviraj Debbarma Posted On : October 21st, 2022
MCA from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (Graduated -2010)

One of my sister's acquaintances wrote 2016 mains with PSIR optional. She had been working in an IT firm till a month before prelims and had been preparing for a year before.

Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) is quite fast. The study material provided by IGNOU is good for selective reading for specific topics like Justice, Equality, MN Roy, Sri Aurobindo, Theory of international relations etc. But she had an engineering background and revealed that the notes were not of premium quality.

Paper 1- Part A

Gauba is not bad. But you will need to read the book more than one time to interpret it completely. The information has been divided unevenly within the chapters making it a difficult read. One more good source is Shubra Ranjan's notes. They summarise the points in the UPSC syllabus format.

Paper 1- Part B

Complete Laxmikant.Read the interpretations given by famous analysts, their viewpoints, case laws and their history and the politics that played behind the evolution of laws and how and why the judiciary evolved. Again for this look into Shubra Ranjan notes. For the remaining topics look into Oxford publications.

Paper 2- part A

For this part, the best recommendation is Heywood’s global politics. It’s easy to understand and very well written. Combine this with IGNOU notes and you will get good results. You can also go through questions given in Baylis and Smith because sometimes they appear verbatim and quoting the exact same viewpoint can get you some extra points.

Paper 2 - Part B

Conduct internet research and make your own notes on the topics included in the syllabus. Then go through commentaries on IDSA /IPCS websites. This will give you a better understanding of and current status of relations.

Once you are done with all the study materials, focus on developing the vocabulary for PSIR. Make sure your answers are evenly distributed with theories, quotes, facts, years etc. Practice writing answers a lot.

How do I get my IGNOU ID card after taking admission in the MA programme?

AD
Aasif Dar Posted On : October 20th, 2022
Post Grady from IGNOU (Graduated 2016)

To get your IGNOU ID card you need to visit your IGNOU regional centre. You can collect it from there. The ID card should have a stamp of IGNOU on it which makes it valid. If you will download your IGNOU ID card online, it does not have the stamp making it invalid. This will be a major problem in your exams.

It is highly possible that IGNOU does not mail your card. Most of the time you will have to visit the regional centre personally to get your IGNOU ID card.

VK
Varun Kumar Posted On : October 20th, 2022
MA in English Literature and Urdu (IGNOU)

The study materials provided by IGNOU are more than enough. They are very helpful as they are loaded with more quality information than other books. Buying extra books will be just an additional unnecessary expense that you can easily cut down on.

Nowadays English Literature students should turn to online study guides. They are the best options. Some famous sites are listed below:

  • Sparknotes

  • Cliffsnotes

  • Jiffynotes

These sites will give students a better understanding of school subjects. Apart from this, there are certain points you need to keep in point for the best results:

  1. Read a lot.

  2. Make extensive notes.

  3. Ask doubts.

  4. Do extra research

  5. Prove and validate your point clearly.

These points combined with the study material will yield good benefits.
