Before I give you some tips for a fresher at IIT Kharagpur, you need to know that your college life is a very important part of your life and all the experiences and memories are precious. A few tips that will help you on the way are
- You will face tough competition here because your peers are geniuses from various fields so don’t let that dishearten you.
- Choose a society that actually Excites and intrigues you rather than choosing the one that approaches you the most.
- Pay attention to academics especially during your spring semester because a lot of events like the spring fest, illumination, and alumni meet might hinder your studies and result in poor grades.
- Don’t let distractions make the better of you as you yourself are responsible for your life and career.
- Your CGPA is much more valuable than the POR in the long run, so make sure to pursue your passion without sacrificing your CGPA.
Lastly, bear no regrets regarding the choice of your branch or your JEE rank because you need to focus on the future and forget the past.
How is 5 years CSE dual degree in IIT Kharagpur in comparison to IIT Roorkee CSE?
My answer might contrast with the opinion of many. Most people go after IIT Roorkee dual degree and consider it a highly esteemed program. In my opinion, the dual degree itself is not a very good option although IIT Roorkee is an excellent institute.
People forget that recruiters do not consider 4-year or 5-year degree holders any differently and offer them similar profiles. In Fact, some recruiters even consider you inferior to BTech students. Moreover, unlike others getting PPOs a dual degree student is not allowed to even sit in the interviews during this time because you won’t be able to join for at least 2 more years.
Academically, both B.Tech and Dual degrees are similar and the 5th year usually comprises project work and wasting time. When it’s time for interviews you are made to sit with juniors and that lowers your confidence all the more. Moreover, if you are planning to attempt CAT or UPSC, this degree is useless. The only advantage probably is the additional one-year college life experience.
How is the M.Tech course for Embedded Control and Software in IIT Kharagpur?
My sister was a part of this course at IIT KGP and she found it extremely interesting and aligned with her interests. The course is industry oriented covering a number of topics like
- Product Design
- Modeling of systems
- Software implementation and Verification
- Product Validation
Basically, all aspects of product design are covered under this course. In the First Semester, it covers topics related to Embedded systems, Control Engineering and Software Engineering and in the second semester, you are free to choose electives of your choice.
As far as placements are concerned, top big names like Robert Bosch, KPIT, Cognizant and Cypress Semiconductor visit the campus for placements.
However, interdisciplinary courses face a lot of issues during placements since this course is not known to many companies. This is because it falls under a different center named ATDC(Advanced Technology Development Center)
To prepare for the interview one needs to go through concepts of signals and systems, processors and controllers, C language, and Assembly language.

If you do not enjoy working with codes, then IIT Kharagpur will be the best option for you.

This is because the CS department of NIT Rourkela is considered the best among all the NITS. The learned faculty pool combined with decent lab facilities and placements make it a good choice for CS aspirants. NIT Rourkela offers a number of opportunities to kick start your career in CS.
However, if you lack the necessary conviction and are still not very sure about your area of interest and the branch you want to choose then the safest bet would be IIT KGP. IIT Kharagpur is way ahead of NIT in every possible aspect be it placements, infrastructure, lab facilities, research culture and alumni network.
