- Technical Clubs: These clubs require a basic level of proficiency for joining. One has to go through auditions to be able to join these clubs. Some of the groups under this category are SDS, IMG, MDG, PAG, ArIES, and Roboconn among many others.
- Compulsory Proficiency (NSO, NCC & NSS): A sports enthusiast should definitely join NSO but it requires a lot of commitment in terms of time and effort. Apart from NSO, you can also join NCC and NSS.
One can witness cutthroat competition in cultural and technical clubs so it’s better to join a group in which you are proficient.
Which branch should I choose among IIT Delhi Chemical, IIT Delhi Biotechnology, IIT Bombay Aerospace, IIT Roorkee Electrical, IIT Roorkee Electronics?
The choice of Institute or even the choice of the branch depends on where your inclinations lie. Still, if I would have been in your place, I would have opted for either IIT Roorkee Electrical or Electronics. Here are a few points that justify my inclination towards IIT Roorkee in general and these branches specifically
- The placement scenario of both the branches is excellent with the highest package of both the branches around INR 1,06,00,000. The average packages are well above 15 LPA.
- Both branches provide excellent exposure in terms of opportunities and knowledge
- The location of the Institute close to the IT hubs like Gurugram, Noida, and the other cities of NCR helps establish industry relations and improve placements tenfold
- The college has a rich coding culture with platforms like SDS Labs, PAG, and IMG making it possible to inculcate coding skills
- The TPO is very responsible and encourages infant companies and startups to offer internship opportunities to its students.
- The overall infrastructure of the campus is decent with hygiene maintenance and basic facilities. Being close to the Himalayas, you can occasionally plan trips also.
- The hostel and food facilities are also good despite the hostels being very old.
- IIT Roorkee has the oldest and strongest alumni network of all the Engineering colleges in India
All in all, the Institute and the branches are much coveted and should be preferred over the other options you have.
Which is better, Applied Mathematics at IIT Roorkee or Mathematics and Computing at ISM Dhanbad?
Both IIT Roorkee and ISM Dhanbad are reputed Engineering institutions offering excellent education as well as opportunities. Being an IIT, Roorkee does have a slight advantage over ISM, though ISM too is going to be an IIT one day.
The infrastructure of both institutes is equally good with IIT Roorkee having a slight advantage over ISM because of its early establishment. However, ISM is fast developing and has a beautiful campus. It’s going to house Asia's largest library soon.
Branch-wise, both Applied Mathematics and MNC comprise Mathematical concepts but with a different perspectives. Applied Mathematics has pure math and only those who want to pursue research in the same should go for it. MNC on the other hand is a blend of Maths as well as Computing (coding) and is more in demand than Applied Mathematics. Its scope is also wider than APM and has better placement opportunities.
Eventually, it’s a matter of preferences and not the credibility and worth of the branch that you should focus on.
Should opt for CS in IIT Roorkee or Electrical in IIT Delhi?
My brother is a CS student at IIT Roorkee, yet he suggests everyone should go for Electrical at IIT Delhi instead. Here are a few reasons why:
- CS coursework is suitable only for those genuinely passionate about Computer Science as its curriculum is very demanding.
- A few Finance giants are offering huge packages that don’t visit IIT Roorkee but visit only a few IITs like Delhi, Bombay, and Kanpur. Some of these include Tower Research, Morgan Stanley, CSFB, McKinsey, etc.
- Roorkee lacks many urban facilities available at other IITs making it difficult for the students to explore outside campus or prepare for higher exams.
- The CS faculty pool of IIT Roorkee is very limited with most eminent professors retiring or leaving the Institute.
All these reasons are more than enough to convince someone to choose IIT Delhi over IIT Roorkee.
How safe are the IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur campuses for female students?
Both IIT Roorkee and IIT KGP have top-notch security on campus and are extremely safe for female students so you can rest all your worries. Infact, the quality standards of the security are pretty good considering the fact that it is a government Institute.
- There is a police station inside campus
- 24/7 security guards are on standby
- Some labs have biometric door locking systems, enabling you to work late at night
- Even late at night, you can see people roaming freely
However, the campus has many dogs and other animals, which might scare many people. These are usually harmless unless you provoke them.

The course curriculum of the MSc Economics at IIT Roorkee is well-designed to suit the industry trends. It offers both theoretical knowledge and analytical skills and is at par with reputed universities like ISI, DSE, LSE, IGIDR, and BGSE.

Honestly speaking, the placement scenario for MTech is not very good. Except for CSE most students face issues during placements and end up becoming teachers in universities. The rare packages that are offered to the EE students at IIT Roorkee are also very small around INR 6 LPA.
However, there are a few top MNCs like Google, Oracle, Practo, Intel, InMobi, etc. that open job profiles for everyone in general, and instead of considering your branch or program, they look for the skills and capabilities of the individuals.
One needs to invest extra time and effort to secure packages around INR 25 LPA. Most IT companies offer such packages and not many are aware of this and give in to low packages. You need to prepare well for the interview beforehand. Here are a few ways you can ace your interview and grab a good package and role.
- Right from the beginning, start learning at least one programming language.
- Master either Java or C++ and also understand the basics of other programming languages.
- Become proficient in Data Structures and Algorithms.
- Mastering Python is another way to clear the interview owing to the high demand of AI.
- Practice the learned programming language on the Hackerrank website. Some companies ask for your rank on this website to evaluate your programming skills.
Now the question arises of how to inculcate these skills. Well, you need to befriend a good MTech CSE student who will guide you and provide you with the necessary resources. One can also purchase online courses from Udemy.
It’s recommended that you finish learning these skills by the end of the first year only. Anyone who belongs to a branch apart from CSE needs to follow the above steps to ensure good packages and roles.
How is metallurgy at iit roorkee?
Here are a few aspects through which the credibility of the Metallurgy branch at IIT Roorkee can be discussed
Institute: You will find a diverse peer group of geniuses that will add to your learning experience. Additionally, the campus is located in a beautiful area, and there are many resources available to help students adjust to college life. It’s the best option after IIT B, D, K or Kgp and of course, IISc.
Curriculum: The curriculum of Metallurgy is poor with no diverse approach. The topics covered are taught and studied through rote memorization and no practical application is done. Very few material courses are taught. The fact that only one core job offer was made recently that too by a small steel industry, is enough to determine its credibility. The majority of the batch ends up in IT or Analytics. If you are serious about Material, I suggest going for a Master, that too outside India.
People in the department: Everyone including the staff, professors, and students is very laid back and least interested in anything in general. The staff and professors pay no heed to the complaints lodged by students and the students especially seniors are equally dumb and lack even basic knowledge.
Job prospects: The only way to get a job for students of this department is to learn to code, or else you will remain unplaced. You can also go for GATE, CAT, MS, or Ph.D. Some students even start preparing for Government exams like UPSC, SSC, etc.
My advice to you would be to go for Metallurgy only if you are genuinely interested and want to get MS. A decent CGPA might help you fetch a few company tests and interviews but no jobs. Irrespective of it all, IIT Roorkee does offer an excellent college life experience and if you have no better choice, then go for Metallurgy and prepare yourself well for the consequences.
