Both IIT Bhubaneswar and BITS Pilani are good institutions with decent Mechanical Engineering programs. So, it’s hard to choose one institute over another.
Despite being a new IIT, the Mechanical Engineering program in IIT Bhubaneswar is quite good. This department offers well-experienced faculty members and state-of-the-art laboratories. IIT Bhubaneswar recently signed MoU with many universities for various purposes like research and student exchange. Also, this institute collaborates with foreign universities such as the University of Warwick, University of Southampton, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Western Ontario, University of New York, University of North Dakota USA, and McGill University. Which means excellent research and internship opportunities for the students.

On the other hand, BITS Pilani takes admission through BITSAT which is another tough exam and in 2019, the Mechanical Engineering cutoff was 313. So, the academic environment is great in both institutes.
The course fee for BITS Pilani is higher compared to IIT Bhubaneswar as it is a private institute. For B.E, the course fee is around 4.23 lakhs/annum in BITS Pilani. Whereas, in IIT Bhubaneswar the course fee is around 2.14 lakh/annum.
IIT Bhubaneswar and BITS Pilani both are good options for mechanical engineering so choose according to your convenience.

Mentioned below are some statistics regarding the past placement records:
The current M.Tech in the CSE batch got exclusive opportunities in the R&D departments in companies. They got a decent package and a satisfying job at the same time.
Overall, IIT Bhubaneswar, though being a newer IIT and comes in priorities after IISc, ISI, older IITs, DTU, NSUT, etc. is still a decent option for M.Tech in CSE to get enough opportunities in reputed MNCs and grab a handsome salary package at the same time.
In 2019, around 89 companies visited the campus of IIT Bhubaneswar namely Amazon, Accenture, Adobe, Renault, etc. Almost 90% of the students got placements from IIT Bhubaneswar with 100% placement from the CSE department. The students of the CSE department received a lucrative package of 10-35 LPA. This institute also has MoUs with foreign universities namely the University of Warwick, University of Massachusetts, University of New York, etc which results in good internship offers.
IIT KGP is the oldest IIT in India and students of ECE were offered a median salary of 15 LPA in top companies like Intel, Wipro, Capgemini, Honeywell, etc. More than 70 companies visited the campus and the highest package offered was 24 LPA.
Rest be assured whatever be your choice, it will be worthwhile as both these institutes are good choices so choose according to your course of interest.
It is up to your interest which domain you want to go in. But If you were comparing both on just placement perspective, CSE offers much higher packages from companies compared to other branches.
If most of these factors are considered, ECE in IIT Bhubaneswar seems to be the better choice.
It is difficult to compare two institutes when the choice of the branch is different. You should choose the institute based on the branch you are interested in. IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Dhanbad both are among the new IITs, although IIT Dhanbad is an old institute with well-developed infrastructure and a huge alumni base compared to that of IIT Bhubaneswar. NIRF has ranked IIT Dhanbad and IIT Bhubaneswar 15th and 17th respectively in the engineering category.
The mechanical engineering department one of the most developed departments at IIT Bhubaneswar and it has been present in the institute form the inception. In 2019 the JEE Advanced cutoff for mechanical engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar was 4003-12699 (general category). The fees for the first-year is INR 2.14 LPA.

But earlier this branch was a combination of traditional Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). fROM 2016, these two batches have been divided. For the placement section, many-core companies, PSU’s and software companies are the recruiters of IIT Bhubaneswar.
Placements:
It can be said that the first batch has done pretty well.
If you are willing to change the domain to a software company you should definitely opt for IIT Bhubaneswar but for the core companies, any old IIT would be a better choice.
Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) has been ranked 10th and 11th in the categories engineering and overall by the NIRF rankings in 2019. The institute has tie-ups with the University of Cambridge (UK), University of Oxford (UK), University of Sheffield (UK). IIT Bhubaneshwar:
Both institutes being IITs are among the best in the country for Computer Science Engineering. Being IITs, both institutes have the same curriculum, fees, and similar infrastructure facilities. However, IIT BHU ranks a touch above its counterpart. Placement packages offered at BHU are also better than Bhubaneshwar, making it the better choice. The choice between the shall also depend on the preferred city.
IIT Madras is ranked 1st in the engineering category by NIRF Ranking 2020 making it one of the leading engineering colleges in India preferred by eligible students making it their first option. It has a strong faculty helmed by reputed and highly educated professionals. Last year, the cut off ranged from 90-5000. In the year 2018-19, this IIT had an outstanding placement season with recruiters coming from companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Rolls Royce India Pvt. Ltd., Apple India Pvt. Ltd., Visa Inc., Uber, etc. IIT Madras had the highest offered salary of 16 lakhs per annum for the undergraduate engineering program.170 students out of 189 were placed in these companies. A 65% placement rate from the civil engineering department was observed.
IIT Madras is enriched with facilities like Hostel, Libraries, Common Rooms, Music rooms, Dance rooms, Indoor games, swimming pools, gym, cricket ground, multipurpose indoor stadiums, food courts and a hospital on campus.
IIT Bhubaneswar is one of the newer establishments of IIT. Unlike IIT Madras, it does not have the infrastructure or the strong faculty as it is still in the developing phase. IIT Bhubaneswar in 2019 had a placement percentage of 83% from the Mechanical Engineering department. The core engineering departments are very much valued by students as well as professionals. More than 110 students were recruited by companies like Accenture, Renault, HP, Amazon, Jio, Adobe, etc. students were offered a salary of 11 lakhs per annum in the year 2019.
So, while choosing the institute keep in mind your rank and the choice of subject. Depending on that you can decide where to study.
IIT BHU and IIT Bhubaneswar are ranked 11th and 22nd respectively by the engineering category NIRF 2020.
IIT BHU being an older institute does have a large alumni network which results in good placements but it lacks modern infrastructure which is better in IIT Bhubaneswar. Being a new IIT, IIT Bhubaneswar has better hostels than any other IITs. Thus in terms of infrastructure, IIT Bhubaneswar is better than IIT BHU.
IIT BHU is located in Varanasi which is not the capital city of Uttar Pradesh but IIT Bhubaneswar is located in the capital city of Orissa giving it the advantage of better connectivity with the metropolis, airport and as a result, it attracts more multinational companies.
The closing rank in IIT BHU for CS is under 1000 and that of IIT Bhubaneswar is under 2500. Thus students with a better rank often choose IIT BHU. Coding Culture, Faculty, etc. are also better in IIT BHU.
Placements are also better in IIT BHU for Computers than IIT Bhubaneswar. But despite being a newly established institute the first batch in Computers of IIT Bhubaneswar got placed with an average salary package of 15 lakhs per annum.
So, IIT BHU is a better choice for computer compared to IIT Bhubaneswar is also worth considering because their Computer Engineering department is the most popular. In 2019 placement in Computer Engineering was 100%.
