I would say choosing 5 years dual degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bhubaneswar is a better option than BITS Pilani for electronics and instrumentation.

  • IIT Bhubaneswar is known for its academic standards and it is a government-run institution whereas BITS Pilani is a privately run institution.
  • IIt Bhubaneswar offers great opportunities for the student to excel in both academic and research work with their extensive academic curriculums.
  • The placement records for the department were excellent in 2023 with 82% of the students being placed and having a median package of INR 12 LPA.
  • Some of the top recruiters were Google, Amazon, Microsoft and more

The most important factor is your area of interest. Since BITS Pilani is an older institution, it has more facilities. However, courses at BITS Pilani are on the expensive side, especially when compared to IIT Bhubaneswar.

Choosing a Dual Degree course puts you at a disadvantage. Instead, go for a four-year Engineering program. In case, you do not like Mechanical, you can switch your branch without difficulty during your Master's.

If you do not want a career in Engineering altogether, you can choose to study or work in another domain without wasting another year. Even in this aspect, BITS will offer you more exposure because there are students in Economics and other non-Engineering streams at BITS Pilani.

On the other hand, if you have a genuine interest in Mechanical Engineering, go for the DD program at IIT Bhubaneswar. Every student from the Mechanical branch of IIT Bhubaneswar will tell you that they are happy with their choice and enjoy the course. This is because of the really good faculty at IIT Bhubaneswar Mechanical Department. The placements are also good and core mechanical companies do visit the department for placements.
