I have friends in all the 3 NITs and here are some points that I concluded while having a conversation with them
Hope you make a wise decision after considering all the points.
Here are my insights as a former iMSc. Chemistry student at SVNIT-
Do not enroll into iMSc. Chemistry simply for the NIT tag. Do so only if you have a passionate interest in this course. You’ll have to put in a lot of effort from your own side. The faculty is very talented and the library has a good collection of books related to this field. But all of that will only help if you study religiously.
You’ll get a good understanding of the concepts of Chemistry through theoretical and practical sessions. The last semester will have dissertation work, which will be your introduction to the field of research.
The NIT tag will help you land good internships. You’ll get ample guidance from your teachers, but they can’t do the work for you. So you’ll have to search for good internships and projects all by yourself. The future of this stream mainly lies in research work and teaching. Institutes like Resonance, Akash, etc. visit the department with teaching vacancies.
These are the important details on integrated MSc. in Chemistry at SVNIT. The college offers good extracurricular activities, but don’t expect this journey to be all about fun.
Both SVNIT and NIT Kurukshetra offer decent programs in VLSI. Here is a comparison of the placement statistics that might help you determine the right choice for you.

People like to give the examples of US grad schools or BITS in this regard. But one has to understand that the majority students of these institutions utilize their free time in the most productive manner. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the students at most of the other colleges, including SVNIT.
Classes are important in understanding key concepts and scoring decent grades. When attending a lecture one tends to grasp certain important keywords and concepts there and then, and it pays immensely during the exam time.
Without a strict attendance policy one would get some time for research work or to study the important topics that aren’t included in the curriculum.
But the reality is that most students, despite such strict attendance rules, do not attend their classes regularly. Instead, they waste all their time in gaming or other leisure activities. Then there are some who attend just enough lectures to escape punishment.
SVNIT is forced into putting such strict attendance criteria because the students would otherwise skip majority of their lectures, and waste that time in their hostel rooms doing useless things.
I completed my B.Tech Mechanical from SVNIT and went on to pursue my MBA from a reputed business school. However, the days spent at SVNIT are the closest to my heart, and those were the best college days for me.
The crowd of SVNIT is not just culturally diverse, but it consists of some of the best minds of the country. The first semester is a bit overwhelming because one gets to study with some very intelligent people. But as time passes by, such great company is a source of inspiration and motivation for achieving something big in life. GRE, CAT and GMAT form an important part of peer discussions.
In my days, Mechanical was the best department of SVNIT because of its top class faculty (except a few). By the time I graduated from college, I even had a patent in my name. Like any other college, SVNIT is a place to make lifelong friends. When in college, one learns to share food and clothes with friends, and they become one’s second family.
The mess food is good enough, but by second year it starts to feel very boring. But then, Surat city has great eateries, so food is never a problem for SVNIT students. The environment is amazingly supportive towards finding one’s passions and hobbies.
The life of SVNIT is filled with ups and downs, but the time spent at this place is really great and unforgettable.
The placement is not good for M.Tech courses. Pursuing an M.Tech from SVNIT is a better option if one wishes to prepare for competitive exams simultaneously. Taking out time for preparation isn’t difficult if one is focused and disciplined.
In 2022,18 students were successfully placed on campus from M.Tech Mechanical. The highest package was 9.42 LPA, the average package was 6.86 LPA, and the lowest package was 5 LPA. As for M.Tech Manufacturing, 21 students were successfully placed on campus. The highest package was 9.58 LPA, the average package was 6.29 LPA, and the lowest package was 4.80 LPA.
Some M.Tech specializations like Computer Science, Communications System, CAD/CAM and Structure receive a few core companies for placements. But that number is far from satisfactory. Moreover, very few people are selected for these jobs. Mechanical, Thermal System Design, SMFE and MSc. Physics, mainly receive teaching offers.
Thus, the placements for M.Tech Mechanical are not satisfactory at SVNIT.
I am a student of B.Tech Mechanical at VNIT Nagpur, so I can’t tell you anything about the Mechanical at SVNIT.
VNIT has a good reputation for its Mechanical. Most of the renowned alumni of our college are from this branch. Here’s a few of their names- Dr. Dinesh Keskar (President of Boeing India and VP of Boeing International Trading), Ashish Saraf (Vice President at Airbus), Hemant Karkare, Satyendra Pakhale and Sanjay Joshi. The faculty for Mechanical is good, and the department offers good lab facilities as well. The senior- junior interaction is also good at the department.
Though I do not know much about SVNIT, I expect that its Mechanical department must be at par with the one at VNIT. Do a thorough research before deciding between either of the colleges.
One of my friends studies atSVNIT. To him it is a very good college and studying here is completely worth it.
These days and events are a very important part of college life as it helps in interactions and exposure. Hence, SVNIT Surat is a great college where you will get to explore and learn many things along with your academics and here you will get one of the best experiences of our life.
I am an alumnus of SVNIT, and my experience of this college has been great.
SVNIT is a good college in every aspect. It has a good campus, good hostel facilities, decent mess food and good infrastructure.
It is located in a developed part of Surat, the Dumas Road. So it offers good connectivity. The area has easy access to malls, theaters, and amazing eateries.
If you don’t get a top NIT or one of the IITs, SVNIT is the next best option.
