How is life at NIT Raipur for a B.Tech student for 4 years?
Every NIT and IIT has a plethora of brilliant and multi-talented students from all over India. Luckily, I have few friends from NIT Raipur who are now alumni. My friends had a mixed experience there, which is enough to give you a gist.
- Campus: NIT Raipur doesn’t have a very vast campus to boast of. However, you won’t be lacking any basic facility there. There are basketball, volleyball, football and cricket grounds for sports lovers.
- Mess/Canteen: The hostel mess is just satisfactorywith every Sunday afternoons being overly crowded. You will see people climbing up the tables to draw fresh hot 'Puris' and burning their hands. You will also see a few people fighting over the amount of paneer and Chicken pieces with the mess staff. My friends usually went for cheaper options like outside restaurants like Punjabi Dhaba, Bajrangi Dhaba, Little Hut, etc.
- Hostel life: Just like every college, people living in hostels have the best college life. However, due to less number of hostels, many students live outside. If you are a girl, then you will face more harsh rules like no entry after 6 pm in the evening except in case of special permissions, etc. On Friday/ Wednesday evenings you can see most couples roaming out. Every Wednesday night the whole boys' hostel will be empty due to the cheapest movie tickets.
- Peers: You will be interacting with so many talents from all over India, you will never be alone. Also, ragging is not practiced at all. Yes, seniors may approach for interaction which is nothing to worry about. You might need their guidance and help later.
Every year students also organize fests like Electrika, Samar, etc. There is no doubt that you will enjoy your duration at the institute.
How is the infrastructure of NIT Raipur?
NIT Raipur has a well-planned infrastructure that is improving with time. Here are a few details on its campus-
- The main building is well-made, and the campus has multiple gates.
- The main gate has a very professional look.
- The campus has greenery all around. Near the college entrance, you’ll find two gardens.
- Just outside the campus, you’ll find the local railway station (Saraswati Nagar Railway Station).
- The college laboratories are well maintained.
- There are two grounds for sports and NCC. There is an indoor open badminton court, an outdoor basketball/volleyball court, and a gym room.
- The hotels have the necessary furniture, an indoor badminton court, and table tennis facilities.
- Some of the new classrooms have ACs and projectors.
- There is a common canteen for students and faculty.
- The campus has a dispensary as well.

How is the NIT Raipur campus?
The NIT Raipur Campus is decent and can be rated 3 out of 5. It does not match the other lavishing NIT campus but has its own advantages. Here are some of the things that you should know about the NIT Raipur campus.
Disadvantages:
- The campus does not offer hostel facilities to all students.
- It does not have a big auditorium.
- Along with the hostel and an auditorium, it lacks an indoor sports facility.
Advantages:
- There is a 24*7 Wi-Fi facility available.
- The other amenities include a gym, canteen, garden, dispensary, cafe, sports ground, mart, parlor, juice corner, etc.
- The location of the campus is in the center of the city and is a prime location.
- The campus has a lot of greenery.

Nowadays, engineering aspirants give more importance to the brand and tag of the college rather than the academic ambiance they offer. Like sheep in a herd, they flock to colleagues that have higher rankings and give them a tag to boast about in the process, They forget that for education, the tag does not matter.
IIITs are the most neglected institutes in this process. IIITs like Jabalpur, Allahabad, Kancheepuram, and Gwalior have been set up by MHRD that focus primarily on studies in the IT sector, unlike NITs that cater to various branches of engineering. IIITs thus have a CS-oriented culture, curriculum, and opportunities. This may not be the case for NITs that have many branches.
Although NIT Raipur is older than IIIT Jabalpur, it's not at par with IIIT Jabalpur at least in terms of its Computer Science education. IIIT Jabalpur has much better placements for the CSE department than the IT branch of NIT Raipur. Moreover, IIIT Jabalpur has collaboration with Universities in Japan, unlike NIT Raipur.

The average package offered to Mechanical branch last year was INR 7.56 LPA. The package offered varies according to the company which accepts you.
- Core Jobs-
- In the core sector, Automobile companies like Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Tata Motors, and FIAT offer decent packages between 5.5–6 LPA.
- Companies like Vedanta Resources Plc offer higher packages than these automobile brands. But a large part of that amount is variable pay which depends on the performance of the individual and the company. In the end, the in-hand salary turns out to be equal or even less than the automobile brands.
- PSUs like Coal India Ltd, BPCL and HPCL offer really good packages of 10-12 LPA. But you can’t rely on them. BPCL and HPCL strictly allow a handful of branch toppers to appear for placements. On the other hand, Coal India Ltd. doesn’t have vacancies for mechanical engineers each year.
- Non Core Jobs- Some software firms as well as analytics companies are open to all engineering branches. But they offer very low packages, around 3.5 to 5 LPA.
Mechanical Engineers earn comparatively less than CS/IT students. However, this branch offers more job security. Based on this data, you can figure out the current state of placements for Mechanical at NIT Raipur.
What should I prefer, electrical or electronics and telecommunication at NIT Raipur?
For an Institute like NIT Raipur, both the branches of electrical or electronics telecommunication are worth taking. Below mentioned are some points about the branches which may help you in making a decision.
- Both branches hold good placement statistics. Core companies usually opt for the electrical branch students while software-based companies go for the students of the electronics and telecommunication branch.
- The Department of Electrical branch has a decent reputation in college as this is a core branch which follows all the discipline and regulations.
- IES is open for the students for both the branches and thus choosing any one branch is no less than the other.
- When it comes to academics and scoring well; the students of both branches are exceptionally good. Ms. Jaya Jha from the Electrical branch and Mr. Shivam Singh of Electronics and Telecommunications bagged AIR-1 in Graduate Aptitude Test.

Should I take production engineering at MNNIT Allahabad and try for a branch change or should I take CS in NIT Raipur?

My brother was a student of MNNIT Allahabad and for his 1st year, the highest CGPA was 9.67, while many scored 9. So, the chances of branch upgradation are quite slim.
