Which one is better for computer science and engineering and why: VNIT Nagpur, NIT Calicut, or NIT Rourkela?

AB

As an alumnus of VNIT Nagpur, I will share some pros and cons of studying CSE from there. To know about the CSE at NIT Calicut and NIT Rourkela, you can consult the alumni from those institutions.

Pros of studying CSE at VNIT Nagpur-

  1. The placements for CSE branch are excellent. The majority of students (around 75%) are placed within the initial months of the final year. Those who are not placed mostly have very low grades or backlogs (at most 10-15 students out of around 90).
  2. The Alumni Internship allows 2nd and 3rd year students to intern at the companies of college alumni.
  3. The CSE faculty is quite good and experienced.
  4. The coding culture is good with a coding club and monthly internal coding contests.
  5. Visiting faculties from IT companies like Persistent and Infosys offers exposure to industry standards and the latest industry developments.
  6. Lab work and assignments allow students to put their skills to practice. You will get ample time to publish research papers or work on your own projects as a CSE student over there.

Cons-

  1. Summers are hot in Nagpur, especially during April and May. But the weather is fine for the rest of the year.
  2. The college offers all the courses required for B.Tech. But some advanced elective courses like Computational Biology are not offered. However, such courses are not guaranteed to be offered by other NITs as well.

After looking into the various factors, make an informed choice for your CSE among VNIT Nagpur, NIT Calicut, and NIT Rourkela. VNIT Nagpur is a great choice for a CSE as per my personal experience.

Is civil engineering course good at NIT Rourkela?

SV
Sudeeksha Verma Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

The Civil Engineering program at NIT Rourkela is considered to be quite good. The faculty is well-qualified and experienced, and the curriculum is comprehensive and up-to-date.

Here is a detailed analysis of the program based on common parameters

  • Curriculum : The curriculum is light and has been recently updated to match the trends in the industry. Most subjects in GATE and ESE have been included to make preparation easy.
  • Faculty : The Civil engineering department of NIT Rourkela has a highly-qualified faculty that pay heed to the needs of the students. They are very helpful and cooperative.
  • Specialization and Course: The Civil engineering branch at NIT Rourkela now offers only an MTech program in the following specializations: Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Water Resource Engineering. M.Tech students have a heavy workload in the first year and only project and research activities in their 2nd year.
  • Research : Ph.D. programs are offered in all the above specializations. NIT Rourkela has some of the best research facilities and opportunities in the country.
  • Placements : The placement percentage of this branch is around 80% with more than 50% of students getting placed in core profiles in companies like L&T, Vedanta, KEC International, etc. Many analytics and other non-core companies visit the campus and offer better and more packages than core companies.

Overall, the NIT Rourkela Civil Engineering branch offers many opportunities and should be considered a decent option.

How is the chemical engineering department at NIT Rourkela?

AB
Ankita Bhattacharya Posted On : January 15th, 2022
B.Tech Chemical Engineering & American Chemical Society, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2021)

According to the student’s reviews online, you should not opt for chemical engineering at NIT Rourkela.

Here are some reasons as to why:

  • The faculty of the department is not good, they are mostly new at their jobs and have very little educational experience.
  • They focus more on theoretical learning than practicals.
  • They prefer when students mug up theories rather than understanding them in depth.
  • The teachers sometimes give so many assignments that it becomes impossible to complete them in time.
  • There is a lot of communication gap between students and teachers.

Lastly, the placement scenario of this department is bad. Most of the students are going into the IT sector and a very few got recruited in core industries and many students did not even receive placement offers.

So considering everything it is suggested you do not pursue chemical engineering at NIT Rourkela.

Which is the most difficult subject in NIT Rourkela?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 21st, 2023
lives in New Delhi

This question is quite subjective in nature. My brother is in his B.Tech 2nd year at NIT Rourkela. According to him, the two most difficult subjects in the first year are the ones in which a large number of students fail. These two subjects are-

  1. Mathematics 1 (MA 1001)- This subject is the nightmare of freshers who think Maths is just about problem-solving. On the other hand, Maths 1 is mostly about analysis and imagination. Some professors at NIT Rourkela teach this subject by referring to their notes which is completely opposite to the teaching approach that it requires. A large number of students fail in this subject.
  2. Basic Electrical Engineering (EE 1000)- Many students fail EE 1000 and this subject is considered difficult by all. Some students are not able to clear EE 1000 even during their summer semester. There can be two possible reasons for this- Some believe that the curriculum for this subject is difficult. Others believe that the professors do very strict checking. Both statements are true, but partially.

These two are the most difficult subjects during your B.Tech first year at NIT Rourkela, according to my brother. My brother found MA 1001 to be quite difficult and uninteresting, however, his hard work and dedication allowed him to ace both these subjects. He did not let popular belief demotivate him and worked hard to score excellent marks in both these subjects.

KM
Kirti Mishra Posted On : January 21st, 2022
B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2017)

ECE at NIT Rourkela is good. However, this branch is tough compared to branches like Ceramics, Meta, etc. Some of the advantages of choosing ECE are the great placement opportunities, highly structured course curricular, etc. Whiles few of the cons of joining this branch are time-consuming workload, strict faculties, etc. The department is also quite further away from the hostels.

Is NIT Jamshedpur CSE better than NIT Rourkela CSE?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 4th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

The two primary criteria to evaluate a branch's credibility are academics and job opportunities.

Academically, NIT Rourkela has a certain advantage over Jamshedpur because it is one of the top NITs. Moreover, the curriculum followed is rigorous and students are expected to maintain a high attendance. The CSE department in particular is very rigid, unlike NIT Jamshedpur which has a laid-back attitude with very lenient professors. It's quite challenging to score high marks at NIT Rourkela CSE especially its Data Structures and Algorithms which is a compulsory course for every branch in the first year. The professors are very passionate and learned so the classroom sessions are quite intuitive. But maintaining a high score may be a problem here so you can go for NIT Jamshedpur.

Placements: Most software companies don’t visit NIT Rourkela because of its remote location and lack of air connectivity. Here is a comparative analysis of the placement statistics of both NIT Jamshedpur and NIT Rourkela

Particulars

NIT Rourkela Placements 2023

NIT Jamshedpur Placements 2023

Number of Companies Participated

Number of Offers

INR 83 LPA

Average CTC

INR 12.95 LPA

INR 15.98 LPA

Top Recruiters

Apple, Google, VISA (2022)

Alstom, Tata Motors, Tata Cummins, KPMG, Adobe etc

Talking about CSE placements specifically, NIT Rourkela's average package for CSE is INR 21.87 LPA while NIT Jamshedpur's CSE average package is INR 26.63 LPA. NIT Jamshedpur seems to be a much better option for CSE as it has better placements and also a flexible academic scenario.

Which is the best hostel at NIT Rourkela?

AK
Ashish Kumar Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2019)

There is no ‘best’ hostel because every student considers his own hostel better than others because it's the place he spent the best years of his life and gave him precious memories. Also, NIT Rourkela does not have hostels but Halls of Residence. That being said, my sister, an ex-student of NIT Rourkela considered her hall, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw Hall of Residence the best hall in NIT Rourkela.

  • This hall is closest to the entrance and is surrounded by lush greenery.
  • The hall serves the best food on campus. Mostly students of other halls complain about the quality of food served but here students enjoy their dinner time the most.
  • This hall is the most maintained and furnished hall on the campus because of limited borders.
  • The hall is the smallest and therefore it's easy to maintain its beauty. You will find a variety of flowers and plants in its garden.
  • The boarders of this hall are from diverse courses and departments. This ensures a versatile hostel life. the seniors are there to guide the juniors all the time.
  • KMS has the most spacious rooms of all the halls on campus.
  • The hall is the perfect place to escape to during extremely hot climates. The tall trees at Central Avenue are a perfect shade.
  • The hall is in close proximity to various departments like EC, EE, CS, etc.

Overall, KMS is the best hall of residence in NIT Rourkela that offers a peaceful and serene experience.

How was the placement of ceramic engineering in NIT rourkela?

SV
Sudeeksha Verma Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

Ceramic Engineering is one of the least preferred branches in NIT Rourkela because of its limited scope and job opportunities. Moreover, it lacks demand in the country as of now. However, the scenario is slowly improving. Quite a few core companies like Vedant, TRL, OCL, etc visit for placements. Additionally, students of this branch can sit for companies from the IT sector as well as analytics so the opportunities offered in non-core jobs are plentiful.

I asked a senior about the placement scenario and he told me that in his batch, 80% of the students got placed. The highest stipend offered was Rs. 35,000 per month, and the lowest stipend offered was Rs. 7,000 per month. A few major recruiters included Vedanta, Sera, Somani, Jindal Steel, etc. In 2020, the highest package offered was 42 LPA , while the average package offered was 8.75 LPA . These salary packages are improving every year due to increasing demand. Most of the students from core branches got placements, while the rest of the students opt for higher studies.

Overall, the placement of Ceramic engineering at NIT Rourkela is great.
