Does anybody study M.Tech Cryptography and Security at the ISI Kolkata? How do I crack the admission procedure and what are the interview questions like?

SS
Shivendra Shukla Posted On : October 7th, 2021
Studied M.Tech Computer Science, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata (2019

This course is relatively new and not many students have opted for it as of now. Cryptology Department at ISI is, nevertheless, extremely renowned in the academic circle and industry. A lot of students take their Ph.D. from here and the research is of remarkable quality.

To prepare, you may download the previous year’s question papers of M.Tech Computer Science. The idea is to know the type of questions asked, it'll be similar to the questions asked in the Cryptology paper. As for Math, focus on the MMA portion to understand TOMATO and solve all of it.

Perform well in the interview process or if you have good marks in the written exam that will help you too during the interview. If your scores are low, then get ready to face tougher questions and probably many. The interviewer will test your foundation skills. The trivial will take precedence.

Even if your answer is incorrect just be confident and say it out clearly, they will help you with the final answer themselves.

Is the guest house in ISI Kolkata given to parents of ISI students? For how many days?

RB
Rohan Bose Posted On : September 21st, 2021
M.Tech Computer Science,Indian Statistical Institute (2014)

Yes, students at ISI are eligible to apply for a guest house accommodation for their parent(s). This completely depends upon the tenure of the stay and the availability of the rooms at the guest house. Basically, there are all these conferences taking place from June to December every year.

  • As official requests (conferences, meetings, etc.) are followed by the student requests, it is usually difficult for the latter to be approved during these months. So, getting a guest house might not be an easy task.
  • Relying on a guest house would not be appropriate in such a case and it is better to book a hotel.
  • Moreover, you can see a lot of highly qualified people including faculty, foreign industry personnel, and exchange students coming and going within the campus. So, the rooms are primarily booked for them.

Therefore, it is suggested you book a hotel. I am sure you might have got a clear idea about the facility assisted for the stay. It would be feasible to prefer other options in case first is not available.

Do we have to apply separately for B.Sc (Hons) in ISI Kolkata and ISI Bengaluru?

IM
Ivy Majumder Posted On : September 17th, 2021
MS(QMS) from Indian Statistical Institute (2018)

ISI Kolkata and ISI Bengaluru do not offer BSc (Hons) program. ISI Kolkata offers B.Stat and ISI Bengaluru offers B.Math.

Also, you can only apply for one course at a time because it is seen that all the exams for admissions in the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Diploma, and JRF courses are held on one single day. It is usually held on the second Sunday of May every year. However, the exam for the course applied jointly by ISI Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur, and IIM Kolkata is usually held in the month of February.

Other than that, for all the courses of ISI, the exam is held on that single day itself and also has the same timings. The morning objective type test is usually conducted from 10:30-12:30 pm and the afternoon session subjective type test is conducted from 2:00-4:00 pm.

So you can only opt for one single exam.

How do I apply for winter training in IIT-S or ISI Kolkata?

Choose a research topic in which you are interested in conducting research. Check the IIT's official website to see if any faculty members are conducting research in your field of interest. After that, send them a personal email with your resume and cover letter attached. You simply need to be honest, demonstrate your true dedication, and explain the importance of the internship to your future. Obtain a reference letter from your HOD and send it as well. If they are interested in hiring you as an intern, they will definitely respond to your email. The same procedure can be followed for ISI Kolkata.

If you know anyone at IIT or ISI, it will be very easy to obtain an internship offer from them.

Which one has got better placement and higher average packages ISI kolkata M.Stat or math and computing from any of the 5 old IITs?

SC
Sagnik Chakraborty Posted On : September 16th, 2021
B.Stat (Hons.) from Indian Statistical Institute (2020)

I have friends studying in ISI Kolkata and old IITs. Based on my conversations with them, I will say there is no doubt that M.stat students from ISI have better chances of landing jobs with really lucrative salaries. You will be surprised by the fact that ISI is known for its 100% placement ratio for M.Stat. This is not the case you would be able to find in any IIT whether old or new.

  • Even if you pursue a B.tech degree from IIT Bombay (an old and reputed IIT), the institute never succeeds in maintaining a cent-percent placement record. You can even cross-check the stats from IIT Bombay’s website.
  • Students studying mathematics and computing students from IITs, most of them are more inclined towards research careers than jobs.
  • M.Stat degree from ISI is unique in India. The course is highly reputed and the institute itself is far ahead of most Indian institutes in the field of stats, math, and economics.

Overall, ISI stands as a premier institute for fields especially related to stats, math, and economics with a 100% placement ratio.

How are the classrooms and campus at ISI Kolkata? Are the classrooms air conditioned?

TV
Tejas Verma Posted On : September 4th, 2021
M.Tech Computer Science, Indian Statistical Institute (2014)

ISI Kolkata is a very good mix of the old school and modern infrastructure. There are classes that have a typical old-school vibe like a tall ceiling, fans hanging from rods, typical old wooden benches and desks, a traditional wood-lined blackboard with chalks and dusters.

There are fully air-conditioned classes, gallery-type classrooms and all other modern facilities you will ever need. The campus is lush green, close to the River Hooghly and thus cool winds blow throughout the day. There are open areas for playgrounds, ponds along with the hostels and the academic blocks.

Does ISI conducts separate exam for Delhi and Kolkata campus for MSQE course?

RG
Rahul Gupta Posted On : September 6th, 2021
MSQE from Indian Statistical Institute (2019)

One of my friends graduated from ISI, Delhi Campus. So I might be able to give you some information about it.

  • For the Kolkata and Delhi campuses, I don’t believe there are separate MSQE exams.
  • When filling out the application, you must choose between Kolkata and Delhi.
  • If nothing has changed since 2009, which I assume it has, you will only have to take one exam and select your campus on the application form.

However, in Delhi and Kolkata, interviews are performed at the relevant locations. That is, students who are chosen in a Delhi interview are admitted to ISI Delhi, and vice versa.

What are reviews about ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) placements and MS programmes at centres in Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata?

TC
Tarun Chakraborty Posted On : September 1st, 2021
Studied at Indian Statistical Institute (2017)

Having to know some people studying at both Simsree and KJ Somaiya and here are some things that you should know. They both are equally good.

  • Both the institutes, for their MMS course, teach the same syllabus specified by the University of Mumbai. So, according to the content, there is no difference.
  • This is generally a good thing that you are specializing in something that roughly 4 to 5% of the batch will specialize in.
  • It is not as difficult for the placement committee to get companies with specific profiles.
  • The institutes have been there for a fairly long time and both have a steady pool of recruiters. Therefore, placements are not very problematic.
  • Having said that, placements depend on multiple factors, and nothing can be guaranteed.
  • K J Somaiya has more full-time faculty members whereas SIMSREE has more visiting faculty members. But cannot say the same about the operations specialization.

Irrespective of where you go, your responsibility is to get better, participate in competitions, do certifications, and improve yourself holistically. The institute cannot impose anything if you have no intention of doing it.

Which course should I choose if I get a chance to study at ISI Kolkata, a B.Math or a B.Stat?

AS
Aniket Sinha Posted On : October 7th, 2021
Studied MS(QMS) from Indian Statistical Institute (2018)

Both B.Stat and B.Math are different courses being offered at different campuses at ISI Kolkata and ISI Bangalore respectively. There are only a few common subjects in both courses.

The choice ultimately depends on your choice and interest. You can go through the syllabus of both courses and understand the topics. Find whichever interests you, you can choose to be research-oriented like B.math students or go for M.stat or other courses, if you choose so.

You can apply for only 1 course because the institute conducts the entrance of both courses at the same time and day. You will be able to appear for only one of them.

For ISI MSQE exam, can we apply for either Delhi or Kolkata, or both?

PG
Priya Goel Posted On : September 6th, 2021
Ph.D. Economics, California Institute of Technology (2022)

While choosing between Kolkata or the Delhi campus students should apply to any one of them and not in both of them. Some commonly known facts regarding this are: -

  • Both ISI Kolkata and ISI Delhi are very good for pursuing Masters in Economics.
  • Both of the institutes have excellent faculty in their fields.
  • Placements for both the institutes are really good, especially for PhDs.
  • The interview list for ISI Delhi has been found to be bigger than that of ISI Kolkata

People believe that it is easier to get into ISI Kolkata when compared to ISI Delhi because of the location and fewer competitors for the institute which is absolutely wrong. Both the institutes have the same cutoff and entrance exam. The criteria for the selection of students is also the same in both the institutes therefore it is equally hard for the students to get into both.

According to a report published it has been observed that students find it easier to get into ISI Kolkata when compared to ISI Delhi. The cutoff criteria change every year and for last year it was: -

  • For ISI Delhi the cutoff was said to be near 400 out of 600 according to the stats released in the official page.
  • For ISI Kolkata the cutoff was said to be near 310 out of 600 from the same source.

Overall ISI Delhi is the better option here but ISI Kolkata is the safer one.
