Which one is better for doing PG in neurology; NIMHANS or AIIMS?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : September 30th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

Both AIIMS and NIMHANS are excellent options for pursuing a PG in neurology. While choosing one between the two, you might want to consider the following simple differences

  • Courses: DM Neurology is offered at both AIIMS and NIMHANS. Both the colleges offer this course after PG in General Medicine for which you will have to pass the exams conducted by respective institutes.
  • Courses after MBBS : NIMHANS offers a direct 5 years of DM neurology course after MBBS while AIIMS does not offer any direct DM neurology course after MBBS. So If you choose NIMHANS, you will not have to take an entrance exam for admission to DM after PG in general medicine. NIMHANS certainly gives a huge edge in this aspect.
  • Practice: AIIMS has a huge patient load most of which is dealt with by senior citizens. So, you will not get much clinical exposure and will be entrusted with trivial tasks only. NIMHANS on the other hand is a national-level neuro institute where you will get to deal with all types of patients right from the first year.
  • Location: AIIMS Delhi has a clear advantage over NIKHANS in terms of location.

So choose wisely!

Can someone simultaneously prepare for both AIIMS PG and NEET PG?

KS
Kaushal Sharma Posted On : January 8th, 2021
Former MBBS at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (2013-2018)

Yes, it is absolutely possible for someone to prepare for both AIIMS PG and NEET PG simultaneously. For that, there are a few points to consider which are stated below.

The following table states the recent seat count available from NEET PG and AIIMS PG.

Total Number of MD + MS + Diploma seats under NEET PG (Government + Private)

27,979

Total Number of MD+ MS+ Diploma Government seats under NEET PG

17,921

Total Number of MD + MS seats under AIIMS PG

680

Points to consider:

  • AIIMS PG entrance takes place in November, whereas the NEET PG entrance is in January. So, it’s very natural to get tired after appearing in AIIMS if the candidate has high hopes for AIIMS. Therefore, it’s better to take a break for at least a week or until the result comes, after which the candidate is sure about whether to prepare for NEET PG or not.
  • The syllabus and pattern for both AIIMS and NEET PG are the same. So, it will become easy for candidates to cover the entire course and practice accordingly.
  • The syllabus should be covered subject-wise and as planned in one’s own strategy.
  • After AIIMS is over, try to practice NEET PG mock tests in order to understand the pattern.
  • You must focus more on the core knowledge and a brief overview of the updates would be enough.

Do not feel stressed if you haven’t cleared AIIMS PG. You can give your best shot in NEET in a month's time and full-focus can do well. Having a similar structure and syllabus, both exams have a common way of preparation which needs to be covered at an early stage and the advanced preparation following it. So, simultaneous preparation is always possible.

Do hostels of IIM Kozhikode have single or double occupancy?

AK
Arun Kumar Posted On : January 29th, 2024

My brother completed his PGP from IIM Kozhikode a few years back.

According to him, first year PGP students are randomly allotted single/double/triple occupancy rooms. The allocation varies for boys and girls. Single occupancy rooms share a common washroom on the same floor. They do not have an AC facility, and common washrooms are not provided with geysers.

Double occupancy rooms are provided with attached washrooms. Those rooms have ACs, and their washrooms have geysers. But the AC and geyser facility is available only after paying a monthly rent alongside the other fees. In the second year, there is an option to select either a single or double occupancy room.

The hostel rooms are top class in comparison to other colleges. The balconies open to a scenic, resort like view. The hostel allocation process changes each year, based on the diversity ratio and batch strength.

How is mess food at NIT Silchar?

SB
Silvia Basu Posted On : August 25th, 2023
Studied at NIT Silchar (2019)

The mess food at NIT Silchar is very oily. Poori or Paratha is served for almost every breakfast. Potatoes are the only abundant vegetable. Other healthy vegetables are served quite seldom. Salad isn’t served everyday. Occasionally, you'll get some fruit like Bananas, or fruit shake. A thick layer of oil can be seen floating on top of the vegetables.

It is unhealthy to consume such an oily breakfast on a regular basis. Oily foods lead to increased cholesterol levels and very bad heart health. Even the snacks consist of fritters, samosas, and other foods that require deep frying. The seniors don’t bother and say nothing can be done in this regard.

Sadly, this is the case not just of NIT Silchar, but many other colleges and universities. Not just a health freak, but a normal student would also agree that such unhealthy levels of oil can lead to serious health problems in the future.

How is the internship (after MBBS) at VMMC Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 26th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

The internship scenario at VMMC is quite disappointing and tiring. The number of patients is so huge in all the departments and interns have to work more than required to get the work done. Their focus is not to learn new procedures but to complete the work and go. Here is the department-wise scenario

  • Pediatrics : In this department, interns are required to find all the case sheets(files) and reports and arrange them before the rounds begin. They are also responsible for dextrose monitoring and discharges. If you are posted in labor, you will have to ensure the baby’s safety.
  • Surgery : Here, interns are required to do sampling, dressing, and discharges. In emergency minor OT, you will have to I n D, suturing, catheterization, and such. Interns also go to OT to watch the surgeries. Postgraduate students may let you do procedures like hydrocele on minor OT days.
  • Medicine : The patient load varies from season to season. In dengue season, it’s maximum and you will always be busy doing sampling and cannulation.
  • OBC : Here you are responsible for sampling, cannulation, catheterization, and NST. You can also take deliveries in the labor room.
  • Orthopedic : During emergency days you will be busy with cast and traction. You might also have to do skeletal traction.
  • For other departments like PSM, ENT, Derma, Optha, and Casualty, the workload is comparatively less so you get a lot of free time.

Overall, through the internships, you will get confident at least in minor tasks, and gain a lot of hands-on experience.

How is BITS Pilani, Goa campus compared to the top IITs?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : August 5th, 2023

BITS Pilani is far better when compared with other top IITs, but of course, the brand value has more demand in the current scenario, and IIT offers more effective placement support than BITS. Here are some points are given below to get more clarity about BITS Pilani, Goa

Funding – IITs are rapidly advancing institutes in India, and they are centrally funded for scientific research and lab equipment. But BITS Pilani is not bad for funding, they have a decent funding system

Start-Ups- Both IITS and BITS are equally good at start-up culture. BITS Pilani is growing and trying to meet with other IITs, which is actually good for the students

Placements – Since IITs are more approachable and attractive to companies, they have a relatively good placement status when compared with BITS. Most of the students are satisfied with the package. BITS, Goa, has a better placement for the CSE branch than other branches

Academics – Both institutes are good at academics, and the departments are rich with renowned scholars.

Hostel – BITS, Goa, offers an incredible campus life to the students. The fee structure is comparatively cheaper and provides good meals for the students.

In what order would you rank MAMC, KGMU, AFMC, IMS-BHU, CMC & Grant Medical College?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : September 25th, 2023
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

I will try to answer your query and provide some additional information.

After the top most colleges- AIIMS, PGI, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SGPGI, these are the colleges you should try for- Medical colleges in Delhi are the best choice. Out of these, MAMC is the most desirable. It is followed by VMMC, LHMC and UCMS. Then come the medical colleges in Mumbai. KEM is a top medical college, followed by Sion and Grant. Colleges of Kerala and Madras are at par with one another. But Madras Medical College is the best among these. AFMC and CMC Vellore are great for patients, but not so much for the students.

Thus, MAMC is a great choice. I do not possess much knowledge of KGMU and IMS BHU, so I haven’t talked about them.

How can I get a migration certificate from VTU? What are the details and signatures required on the form?

RS
Rishi Sen, Posted On : November 2nd, 2021
B.E Civil Engineering, Visvesvaraya Technological University (2013)

According to the information I got online, if your college is affiliated then you just have to fill the migration application form that is provided on the VTU website and then fill in all the details.

In the last line forwarded to VTU registrar ”...this is to certify…” you can either ask your new college academic person to fill it.

Or ask your college a bonafide certificate or study certificate and pin that with the application form alongwith the e-payment SBI fee receipt.

Get your degree certificate / provisional degree certificate attested from any gazetted officer by showing them the original copy.

Then post the whole document by speed post to the address mentioned on the website of VTU that is to the registrar.

After receiving your post they will transfer the migration certificate to your new college.

How can I score CGPA 9 in KIIT?

AD
Ananya Dasgupta Posted On : July 26th, 2023
Studied at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT)

I am an alumnus of KIIT. In my B.Tech Civil Engineering course, I scored a 9.43 CGPA and ranked 2nd overall in my branch.

For a 9+ CGPA, I would recommend you follow this advice-

  • Hostel- You and your roommates will most probably come from different backgrounds, both economic and cultural. Learn to accept the differences and do not waste your time and energy on petty arguments. After your first year at KIIT, when you will be shifted from King’s Castle VII, try to get a room with people who carry the same values and mindset as you. However, be ready for adjustments and compromises with them as well.
  1. Classes- Do not unnecessarily miss your classes at KIIT because there you will learn important tips on preparing for your examinations and other competitions. Also, try to study for 2-4 hours each day after classes.
  2. Read- Read motivating and inspiring books during your free time.
  3. Set a goal for yourself- Be it an MBA from an IIM, getting a good placement offer, or any such goal, make it in the first year itself and work hard towards achieving it. With such a goal in mind, you will study harder toward getting a good CGPA.

Apart from studies, do enjoy your life at KIIT, make amazing friends, and develop leadership and managerial skills by participating in societies like the Photography Society, Music Society, Dance Society, etc.

Which is the best branch in VSSUT, Burla, Odisha?

Sapna Malik updated Posted On : October 12th, 2023

VSSUT is a great place for UG studies. But a degree from this college isn’t sufficient in most cases. So it is usually better to opt for higher studies at a prestigious college.

  1. For an M.Tech or MS, CS/IT are the best branches. This is because they offer endless opportunities in research and jobs.
  2. For an MBA, Production Engineering is the right branch. Its curriculum contains elements of Management Studies. Also, scoring high grades is comparatively easier.
  3. For UPSC, Economics, Law, etc, any branch is equally suitable.
  4. To grab high paying jobs, Mechanical and Production are the best. But there is a fierce competition as core companies hire just 2-3 students each year.
  5. For a CS/IT student who participates in Competitive Programming, goes for ACM ICPC, and maintains good grades, getting off campus placements in Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc. isn’t very difficult. A forum has been set up for competitive programming where the seniors provide good guidance on problem solving.

Make sure to go for a branch that interests you. This does play a huge role in deciding your career prospects.
