How did you spend your last days at IIT Bombay?
Here is the experience of a student at IIT Bombay who has explained how he had spent his last days at IIT Bombay.
During the last 7 days, he experienced the most hectic and difficult days of his life at IIT. He was skipping almost a meal a day during those 7 days while developing a photobioreactor. This device converts sunlight into chemical energy using green algae which could be used for biodiesel and pharma-grade products. The experimental procedure was quite tedious and meticulous requiring measurement of 7 parameters every 4 hours, including the sweetest hours of sleep at 2 am and 6 am.
Testing all 7 parameters would take 1-2 hours, and he was left with just 2 hours before he took the next reading. He had failed numerous times in the process of building up this technology over the last year.
Whenever he failed, he would start all over again and wash the whole setup. After so many failures, he finally succeeded and was able to file a patent on the technology. Although those were the worst, hard, and most satisfying days of his life, he is happy today when he looks back, and that's all that matters in the end.

Are exams at IIT Bombay tough?
Yes, exams conducted at IIT Bombay are quite tough given the competition at the institute. The exams usually test your understanding capabilities and not your learning capabilities.
I did one subject which was very difficult and involved a project demonstration in the end. But the professors teach the topics so well that you hardly have to mug up the concepts.
Once the exams were conducted in a unique manner wherein,
- The students were allowed to open books as they were not able to solve the paper
- The students requested the professor to extend the duration from 3 hrs to 5 hrs after which the students still could not finish the paper.
- The students were then asked to take the paper home and were given 7 days to prepare for the presentation on the same.
The game changed its course and because marks were not to be allotted on the basis of the presentation everyone prepared the concepts well and attended the open contest.
How is the placement for an MTech in biomedical engineering at IIT Bombay?
One of my friends completed his MTech in Biomedical Engineering from IIT Bombay and gave an insight into the placement scenario of the same course. Out of 16 students who attended placements from this course, 14 students were placed. Another friend told me that 11 out of 17 in his batch were placed under decent roles. The others opted out of placements.
A number of Biomedical companies like GE, Cerner, L&T etc visit the campus and offer decent roles. Many non core companies also allow Biomedical students to sit for their placements and sometimes offer good roles too.
A number of analytics and data science jobs are also offered. Top core roles offered here are Associate Analyst, Lab Analyst,etc. Many students even opt for PhD after MTech.

Which is the best hostel in IIT Bombay and why?
My brother had the pleasure of staying at hostels 9, 16, and now 13 in chronological order. However, he claimed not one hostel had the complete facilities one expects in a hostel. I have described each hostel in a few pointers
Hostel 9
- Extremely small room difficult for even 2 people to share
- The best food in the entire institute is served in this hostel
- It has many facilities like a pool, a small footer field, basketball court, table tennis and makes your leisure time great
Hostel 16
- This hostel has some of the best rooms in the entire institute. The rooms are double occupancy but can easily be shared by more people.
- If you are lucky enough to be allotted the 6th floor or above, you can get a spectacular view of Hiranandani.
- The food is not very good
Hostel 13
- The room is usually for PG or DD students
- The rooms are single occupancy and are decked with decent facilities
- The food in the Mess is neither too good nor too bad.
- The hostel has a wide range of extracurricular facilities. There is a TV room that can accommodate around 70–80 people.
- This hostel is most coveted because of the spectacular view of the Powai lake and the Hiranandani it offers.
What is the salary range for an MTech graduate in mechanical engineering from IIT Bombay?
The salary of an MTech graduate in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay varies from branch to branch.
- Mechanical Designers get more salary ranging from 5 to 12 lakh than others some even get around 20 LPA.
- Thermal Engineering students get slightly lower packages than design students
- Manufacturing Engineering students get salaries of around 4 Lakhs to 8 Lakhs
MTech students are usually hired by core companies that gain less profit than Software Companies and hence end up with lower packages than BTech students. Moreover, companies are aware that BTech students are all-rounders and thus prefer them to MTech students. However, the promotion of MTech students is faster than that of BTech students.
Which IIT should I choose: IIT Mumbai or IIT Ropar considering and why?
Given a chance between IIT Bombay and IIT Ropar, you should definitely go for the former. It is currently ranked higher than IIT Ropar. NIRF 2021 has ranked it 3 for B.Tech.
IIT Bombay is constantly ranked among the top engineering colleges in the nation. It is the favorite destination for almost all the JEE aspirants. IIT Bombay cutoff trends also indicate the same. You will need to score under 100 in JEE Advanced to get a seat at IIT Bombay.
How easy is it to take a branch change at iit bombay?
If you're looking to change your branch at IIT Bombay, there are two main factors that will determine how easy or difficult it is for you:
- Other students who are also looking to change their branch - The demand for different branches at IITB is divided into three categories: high-level demand (Computer Science & Engineering and Electrical Engineering), mid-level demand (Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering), and low-level demand (all other branches).
- Your own priorities and aptitude - You'll need to decide how much time you want to dedicate to studying vs. extracurricular activities, and where you fit relative aptitude compared to other students.
Here's a breakdown of what these factors mean for you:
Role of the first factor:
- Demand for different branches at IIT Bombay is based largely on which branch offers better job opportunities and salaries, so some branches are more competitive than others.
- Depending on the level of demand for your desired branch, it may be harder or easier to get a COB.
Role of the second factor:
- Depending on how much time you want to dedicate to studying vs. extracurricular activities, and where you fit relative aptitude, you may find it easier or harder to get a COB.
- Specifically, you can think of yourself as falling into one of the following categories:
- Most of the time dedicated to studying and least to the extracurrics (MSLE)
- Equal amount of dedication and time to both studies and extracurrics (ESE)
- Least time given to studies and most to the extracurrics (LSME)
- Students with above average aptitude (AAA)
- Students with average aptitude (AA)
- Students with below-average aptitude (BAA)
Overall, getting a COB at IIT Bombay will depend on a combination of these factors, so it's important to be realistic about your chances and make sure you're prepared to put in the effort needed to succeed.
Is the electrical engineering department the best in IIT Bombay?
I haven’t heard of many people who actually join Electrical Engineering because they want to genuinely pursue Electrical. Rather most students take Electrical because their JEE Rank did not allow them admission to any other branch. In fact, some even take Electrical Engineering and opt for minors that match with their areas of interest.
When it comes to interdisciplinary subjects, IIT Bombay provides the perfect chance to do so. What usually happens is that students are unaware of their area of interest while choosing their branch during admission. As a result they end up taking disciplines that match their ranks rather than interests.
However, if you are clear about your choice of branch, don’t hesitate and go for it without thinking much of your rank. Although difficult, you can always change your branch if you later regret choosing that specific branch.
I always suggest aspirants only choose the branch on the basis of their preferences and not the placements. Even if you land a good job, you will never be satisfied if you are working in an area that does not intrigue or excite you.
How did you get an internship offer from IIT Bombay?
Before securing an internship, you need to analyze some points that will make the process easier. Work on these and then embark on your journey to work as an intern.

- By mailing to the professor of your field of interest.
Ekalavya Internship Program:
Suitability: This is most suitable for those who are completing the 3rd year only. However, it may also be suitable for 2nd-year students with exceptionally good academic performance.
Procedure:
- Apply for the internship.
- If you get selected for the first round., you will have to wait for the second round
- The second round is an Online Test. Take help from seniors during preparing for this round.
- You get selected finally once you clear their second round.
Write an email to the professor
This may sound like an ineffective technique to get an internship when in reality it’s the most under-rated, under-used tool for grabbing an internship abroad. But one must keep in mind that this method is not definitely easy as it depends on a number of factors. I have mentioned some tips that will help you get a clear picture of how to get an internship by writing an email to your professor.
- Don't lose hope after one or two emails go rejected
- Don't contact two professors in the same department
- Be specific about the area you want to intern in
- Start your internship hunting early
- Target the right country
