Why average salary of IIT Roorkee M.Tech (CSE) is similar to tier-3 (or average) engineering colleges?

AS
Anuj Sinha Posted On : April 14th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2021)

Sadly, most companies prefer UG students over PG students because they can get the same job done with a smaller package and they are more flexible than MTech students. There are mainly two types of people who opt for MTech

  • Research enthusiasts who target Ph.D.
  • People who weren’t able to land a good package after BTech

As far as placements are concerned, those who want to pursue a Ph.D. eventually have zero interest in placements while those who are looking for a job consider an MTech degree as a door to better opportunities and packages.

While some companies offer similar packages and profiles to both BTech and MTech students, most other companies discriminate between them. It’s sad to admit that most companies don’t prefer MTexh students over BTech students. However, some students with exceptionally good performance or skills may land a package of around INR 10 LPA. Other students receive low packages bringing down the overall average CTC of the Institute. This is why the average salary of MTech students at IIT Roorkee is very much similar to that of below-average institutes.

What are the pros and cons of MTech in CSE at IIIT Bangalore?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : October 7th, 2023

The iMTech in CSE is a highly regarded and unique program offered by IIIT Bangalore offering excellent exposure to its students. Here are the pros and cons of pursuing this course

Pros:

  • IIIT Bangalore has a very diverse and talented peer group because it has no reservation policy.
  • The placements have been spectacular from the first batch itself when the median package stood at INR 14.7 LPA.
  • IIIT Bangalore is known for its highly experienced and talented faculty. Their profiles are at par with IIT and NIT professors and are also very approachable.
  • Located in the IT hub, IIIT Bangalore students receive internship offers from many top firms and IT Giants.
  • The college has excellent campus and hostel facilities and every minor inconvenience is taken care of.

Cons:

  • The college is CS-oriented and gives little importance to sports and other extracurricular activities. Students are more involved in hackathons and other coding competitions.

  • IIIT Bangalore operates from a very small campus of only 10 acres.
  • The course offered is a 5-year course rather than the usual 4-year course which requires you to spend an extra year doing an internship or a thesis.
  • IIIT Bangalore does not enjoy a very good reputation among recruiters yet mainly because it’s newly established.
  • It’s very expensive and the cost of the first year fees of the integrated program is INR ?3.84 Lakhs.

Considering everything, IIIT Bangalore will take a few more years to establish itself and therefore should only be considered if you have no better options.

IIT Delhi Mtech Computer Technology vs IIT Hyderabad Mtech CSE. Which is better for placements in product based software companies?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : May 9th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Both IIT Delhi MTech Computer Technology and IIT Hyderabad Mtech CSE are excellent engineering programs. However, my personal suggestion is IIT Delhi Ctech. Here’s why

  • IIT Delhi offers the best opportunities considering its rank in the top 3 IITs
  • IIT Delhi holds the Institute of Eminence Status
  • The brand value of IIT Delhi is much higher than the new IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIT Delhi being old has a very beautiful campus with great natural beauty. IIT Hyderabad on the other hand has a newly established campu that is still under construction.
  • A few major companies don’t visit new IITs like IIT Hyderabad. IIT Delhi, on the other hand, is visited by top IT companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Microsoft, Ola, Uber, Tower Research, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Intel, Qualcomm, Samsung, etc

The only disadvantage you might face at IIT Delhi Is the intense competition with CS students as they are all top rankers.

I don’t mean to demean IIT Hyderabad but it’s a fact that the opportunities and exposure that IIT Delhi will offer cannot be compared to IIT Hyderabad.

How is the MTech (CSE) program in Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata? What are the placement stats for an MTech (CSE)?

RD
Raashi Das Posted On : September 23rd, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata (2020)

Heritage Institute of Technology is a very popular and reputed engineering institute and provides very good facilities to its students. According to the reviews online, here’s what I got to know.

  • This college is very good to pursue B.Tech in CSE but not a good option to do M.Tech in CSE.
  • And this is not only for CS, but for all other departments.
  • Although the faculty and the academics are very good in this college, the placements for M.Tech are not upto the mark and it is better not to choose this college to pursue M.Tech.
  • To do M.Tech, it will be better to do it from IIT but you will have to appear for GATE exams to get admission in IITs.
  • And do note that you will have to be in the top 1000 in GATE to get selected for M.Tech courses at IIT.
  • In West Bengal, there is also Jadavpur University which can also be a very good option to pursue M.Tech in CSE.
  • You can also appear for the examination PGET and if you can clear this exam, then you will be eligible to take admission in any government engineering college under WBUT.

Hence, instead of taking admission in Heritage Institute of Technology for M.Tech in CSE, it will be better to prepare for GATE exam and qualify for IIT or else take admission in some other better colleges for M.Tech.

Which is better for an M. Tech. degree in CSE from a placement perspective, IIT Guwahati or IIT Roorkee?

AM
Anirudh Mukharjee Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG)

My brother was in a similar dilemma when he had to choose between IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee for MTech in CSE. Eventually, he went for IIT Roorkee because his sole focus was to secure a job as soon as possible.

  • As far as placements are concerned, IIT Roorkee is better both in terms of the number of companies visiting and the average package.
  • The course structure of IIT Roorkee has been recently dated and it is much better than the older one.
  • IIT Roorkee is in close proximity to Delhi so you can have a taste of the city life as well.

IIT Guwahati has better research opportunities and culture than IIT Roorkee.

All in all, if it’s a job you are after, IIT Roorkee is the best choice but if you want to pursue a career in research, IIT Guwahati is the best place for you.

How is IIIT Vadodara for an M. Tech in CSE?

AR
Ayush Roy Posted On : June 30th, 2021
B.Tech CSE at IIT BHU

It’s better to look for options other than IIIT Vadodara for an M. Tech at CSE. Your IIIT degree from here would be a waste of a huge amount of money. A degree from IIIT-V would not help you in landing a 7 LPA job at the very least.

They do not own a proper college building. Be it infrastructure, labs, or assistant lecturers that have graduated from the same institutes, all are below average. The placement opportunities are as good as non-existent.

I have a few friends at the institute and according to them, M.Tech students are quite neglected. They are not even allotted permanent hostel rooms. This is a case in all the new IIITs. Therefore, you should avoid opting for the new IIITs as they do not have a campus of their own. You have the choice of taking a year drop and prepare for GATE. Evaluate your options and go for an institution that provides a guaranteed opportunity for good placements.

How is the ranking for new IITs for Mtech CSE, IIT Patna, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Ropar, IIT Bhubaneswar, Indore, Jodhpur, and Mandi (in terms of placement, coding and academic workload)

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : June 20th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Based on placements, coding culture, and academic environment here is how I will rank the second-generation IITs

  • IIT Hyderabad takes the first place because of its location in the IT hub of India. The preferable location attracts many reputed firms like Goldman Sachs, NVIDIA, JP Morgan, INTEL, Qualcomm, and Microsoft.
  • IIT Gandhinagar comes second again because of its location and the type of recruiters it attracts. It might not have companies like Qualcomm, INTEL, or JP Morgan Chase but other big shots like Nutanix, Microsoft, GS visit the campus frequently. Even IIT Indore and IIT Bhubaneswar are ranked second as they are similar.
  • Both IIT Jodhpur and IIT Ropar are equal in rankings and are placed 3rd in this list because of their location. These colleges provide excellent opportunities for CS students who are at par with IITs like Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Indore, and Bhubaneswar.
  • I would rank IIT Mandi the last because of its poor location. The college has zero connectivity and no big companies care to visit for placements. IIT Mandi is a good option for those who want to study in a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Overall, most IITs are similar, and thus distance from home should be the major criterion to be considered.

IIT Bhubaneswar is one of the premier institutes among the newly established IITs.  The computer science department is a part of the School of Electrical Sciences and 2018–2020 M.Tech CSE  batch is the first one to be graduating this year, so the statistics are the first one for M.Tech in CSE. There was a 100% placement from this batch this year. Almost all companies that come for recruitment allow students to sit for their placement process. The highest and lowest package was 23 LPA and 10 LPA respectively. The average salary stands at around 15 LPA. 13 LPA is the median salary package that has been received. In general, the students of CSE have received attractive salary packages ranging from 10-35 lakh per annum. The roles offered were an engineer or analyst in research-based organizations or PSUs.
