The choice of the Institute depends on where your interest lies. If you want to study core Geology, then 3-year MSc(tech) course is an excellent option. Both the institutes have below-average core placements with ISM fairing a tad bit better. Irrespective of the Institute and branch, to secure placements you need to be among the top rankers.
My cousin had to choose between IIT Kharagpur‘s MSc in Geophysics and ISM’s MSc(tech) in Geology. She went for Geophysics eventually as he did not consider it wise to waste 3-years in a post-graduate program. In Fact, many of her batchmates dropped IIT Roorkee’s geology and went for Geophysics at IIT KGP. They did not find the teaching and quality of education at IIT Roorkee’s Geology branch as per IIT standards.
I would suggest you go for ISM. But if you too share the same opinion as mine and don’t want to waste 3 years, go for Roorkee and prepare for GATE from the start.
IIT Roorkee Placements 2023 is still conducting its placement drive. The highest CTC was recorded at INR 1.3 CPA while the highest International CTC stood at INR 1.06 CPA.
The below table represents the year-wise highest CTC trends of IIT Roorkee:
Year |
Highest CTC |
2021 |
INR 70 LPA |
2022 |
INR 2.15 ??? |
2023 |
INR 1.3 ??? |
It’s important to note that these highest packages may seem huge but in reality, are misleading. Considering the currency change and tax rate the actual in-hand salary is nothing more than 40 lakhs in CS while 33 Lakhs in Chemical.
IIT Roorkee MTech admission is done on the basis of a valid GATE score. You must have the same bachelor's background or interdisciplinary branch related to your department.
Considering the placements and opportunities offered, some of the best departments in IIT Roorkee for MTech are:
These branches have been listed on the basis of their preference and placement opportunities.
Both IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur are well-renowned institutions for electrical engineering studies. It all depends on personal preferences and priorities. Some students may prefer the academic focus of IIT Roorkee, while others may prefer the research opportunities at IIT Kharagpur. Both institutes have equally good labs and research facilities. However, IIT KGP being the oldest has a slight advantage over IIT Roorkee.
All these points prove that IIT KGP is a better option than IIT Roorkee for EE.
IIT Roorkee is indeed Asia's oldest technical institute and its excellent legacy fetch a lot of opportunities and advantages. Established in 1847, its primary purpose was to create engineers that work for the government and contribute to the overall development of the country. Continuing this legacy, IIT Roorkee alumni can be found in any government organization be it Indian Railways or Indian Railway Traffic Service.
The elaborate alumni network can be actively seen holding key positions in railways and so is the case with other government engineering departments too.
So, we can conclude that the major advantage IIT Roorkee has over other IITs is a strong alumni base in the government sector.
My knowledge is limited to MTech Civil Engineering placements from IIT Kanpur only. But I believe the placement scenario of IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee is pretty much the same.
The core Civil Engineering companies prefer structural engineers to transportation engineering and the competition is also high. For a structural engineer position, you might even have to compete with dual-degree students as companies generally prefer them for the structural engineering profile. Also, the number of structural engineers is higher than transportation engineers theory increasing the competition.
Coming to placements, MTech civil engineers rarely land good packages. A few consulting companies like Spectrum offer a very low package of around INR 4-5 LPA and recruit you as a trainee for 6 months. Lnt also offers 36000 per month to engineering trainees for a period of 6 months.
The general distribution of MTech Civil engineers is as follows
The average package depends on a lot of factors like what career prospect you go for.
Today, CS is one of the most preferred domains and its demand is growing at a very fast rate in the job market. For anyone whose ultimate goal is high packages in top firms, CS should be the only choice. No other branch can fetch you packages as high as CS.
As a BITS Pilani student, you can access the extensive alumni pool and develop strong networks in industries. Also, the CS placements at BITS Pilani are top-notch

I wouldn't suggest you go for ECE IIT Roorkee unless you are genuinely interested in that field and want to pursue a career in it.
Counseling at IIT Roorkee is done through a number of steps given below
All documents are verified well before submission of the demand draft. To be eligible for further rounds, one needs to submit his demand draft.
It’s better to denounce the sheep mentality and think from your own perspective. If you are attracted to CS because of its lucrative branches, I suggest you not go for new IITs as the placement scenario is not that good.
IIT Roorkee, on the other hand, is a very old Engineering college with an excellent legacy. The rich coding culture motivates even non-CS students to learn coding to apply for software companies. The new IITs soaring in Guwahati and Indore lack the necessary resources and dynamism of coding.
One can always work on their noncore branches and gain additional skills to compensate for their flaws. But one should risk the Institute and always go for the best.
It’s better to choose IIT Roorkee Mechanical than CS in new IITs.
IIT Roorkee has a detailed process for students who wish to change their branch.
Here is a summary of the main rules:
Students who have enrolled in B.Tech, IDD, and IMD programs with admission through JEE Advanced are eligible for branch change at the end of the first semester. But you must fulfill the following criteria:
The strength of a class shouldn't increase by 5% of the actual number of seats
Branch change is strictly done on the basis of merit, that is CGPA. In the case of a tie, JEE ranks are considered. Basically, you have to be among the toppers in your branch to be eligible for branch change as the competition is tough, especially in preferred branches like CS and ECE.
