What can be a better option (I have no interest), IIT Delhi biotech or IIT Kanpur civil?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : April 19th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

With no specific area of interest, the best option for you is IIT Delhi Biotechnology. Here are a few points to support my opinion

  • Old IITs have the benefit of equal opportunities for all students irrespective of their branch.
  • You are eligible for placements in all types of companies including software.
  • As a biotechnology student, you get to do internships in various sectors like IT, finance, etc.
  • Exceptionally good grades can fetch you good packages
  • The quality of college life is better ij IIT Delhi than in Kanpur.

IIT Delhi is the dream college of many owing to the excellent brand name and opportunities it offers. Trust me, once you are inside your branch will hardly matter.

What is placement of civil engineering at IIT Kanpur and KGP?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : April 19th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

Irrespective of the Institute, placements for Civil Engineering are just average and not at par with IIT standards. Here’s why:

  • Very few reputed firms make it to the placements for CE
  • Core companies prefer experienced professionals rather than freshers so students are instead taken as a trainee the pay for which is very less
  • The work of a civil engineer is extremely risky and only those with immense practical experience contribute to the firm's success. So your pay and job security is increased only after gaining considerable experience.
  • One needs a lot of patience to stick to this sector.
  • The majority of the batch prefers non-core jobs as the pay is much better and no such experience is required.
  • Employees tend to switch industries to secure a better package both in core and non-core although the scope of this is more in noncore companies.

These placement highlights were related only to the Indian market and not the situation outside India might be different.

How was your IIT Kanpur's MBA interview experience?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : April 19th, 2023

One of my friends had a great MBA interview experience at IIT Kanpur. She had a completely different and exhilarating experience which was nothing like what was going on there. In fact, the students being interviewed before she had been evaluated on the basis of their knowledge of Engineering that too from the 1st year. Almost everyone had no idea because around 6 years had passed and everyone had forgotten even the basic concepts let alone the questions they were being asked.

Before entering the interview room she was very scared and clueless. She found herself in a small room with 2 male panelists.

  • The first panelist asked her about her most exciting aspect to which she told them about the book she was writing. They sounded curious and ended up hearing the entire plot.
  • Next, she was asked if she liked traveling to which she told them about her dream destination being Iceland and how she had already traveled throughout India.
  • They further asked her about her family and why she did not prefer IIM Lucknow despite being close to her home.

The interview ended on a friendly note and she left the room with a light heart. Surprisingly enough, she was able to convert.

What should a non-genius student do to get a seat at IIT Kanpur CS?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : April 19th, 2023

It’s good that you have a target in your mind and aren’t leaving everything to luck. The best way for a non-genius student to get a seat at IIT Kanpur's Computer Science program is to work hard and consistently. Rather than stating the usual; solving previous year question papers, joining good coaching institutes, coordinating school with coaching classes, and self-study, I will talk about some of the most basic things that people often undermine

  • Whenever you feel you are falling into a slump, remind yourself that there are hundreds of students who want you to fail in order to grab your position. Remind yourself of this continuously and you will find yourself out of that bubble.
  • It’s important to assess your own abilities and be honest with yourself rather than being overconfident. I have seen people who are confident with their academics end up with poor grades. Don’t undermine yourself but don’t even overestimate yourself. Remember you are surrounded by geniuses.
  • Don’t get addicted to useless stuff and activities that waste your time. Instead, go for a walk or read for a break.
  • You should have prepared yourself mentally and physically for the sacrifices you have to make and the efforts you have to invest.
  • Study books that make you understand the concepts in a simpler manner yet give you a comprehensive understanding.
  • Motivate yourself with the possible outcome and the reaction of your family. Keep yourself reminded of the happiness and success will harbor.

I would like to end the answer on a final note: There are no non-geniuses, just bad students who do not pay attention in class and bad teachers who do not teach well.

What is IIT Kanpur doing wrong compared to other IITs?

VS
Vijay Sarnaik Posted On : April 19th, 2023
Studied at IIT Kanpur

To answer this question in a single line, IIT Kanpur’s relative grading system is the absolute nightmare of the Institute. While other institutes have a continuous grading system like 10.9,8,7,6,5 and so on, IIT Kanpur follows a relative grading system. Under this grading is done in this manner:

  • A* = 10 Outstanding
  • A = 10 Excellent
  • B = 8 Good
  • C = 6 Fair
  • D = 4 Pass
  • E = 2 Exposure/Repeat
  • F = 0 Fail

The discontinuity in grade points becomes a major issue when applying for higher education or off-campus placements. When you will be evaluated among other IITians you will see students with a 9 which is the usual criterion for placements. But at IIT Kanpur you can either get a 10 or an 8. The same issue arises for applying for MS covert or IIMs.

Basically, someone with an 8+CGPA will be given a 10-grade score while someone with an 8 CGPA will get a 7 rating score thereby reducing the chances of getting a call from B schools.

Im joining IIT Kanpur this year As a senior what is the most valuable tip that you would like to share

NG
Neha Ghosh Posted On : April 19th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2020)

Here are a few valuable tips which Inas a senior would like to give to my juniors to make their journey at IIT Kanpur, a tad bit easier.

  • Never underestimate the importance of CPI as it’s a major determining factor for employability. You will lose out on high job opportunities if your CPI is below 8.
  • Socialize well with your wingmates as they will become your family seats from home and your connection is bound to continue even after a decade of passing out.
  • Don’t force extracurricular activities on yourself just for the sake of a resume and do them only if you are genuinely interested. This is because you will not be able to manage your time well and your CPI will be affected in the process.
  • Don’t pay much heed to the advice of second-year students as they have little knowledge about placements. It’s better to approach a final-year student for advice on the same.
  • Approach the professors frequently and develop a rapport with them. Ask them for career advice and such
  • Adopt one activity that will keep you physically fit and be consistent in that. It can be anything from a simple exercise to joining a gym or swimming.
  • Develop excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Start planning for the future and working on it from the 6th semester itself.

Trust me when I say IIT Kanpur offers the most enriching academic experience the country can offer!

How are roommates allotted in IIT Kanpur? Is it according to JEE ranks?

VS
Vijay Sarnaik Posted On : April 19th, 2023
Studied at IIT Kanpur

No, IIT Kanpur does not have a cruel policy of allotting roommates and rooms on the basis of JEE ranks. You cannot assign someone a room on the basis of his achievements. This is pure discrimination and this practice should be discontinued.

The only 2 institutes that follow this extreme policy are IIT and IIT BHU. The purpose of this is to ensure better living standards and ultimately better outputs from the treasures of the Institute.

In IIT Kanpur rooms and roommates are allotted randomly and you can expect almost anyone as your roommate. Your roommates play a major role in influencing your grades, examinations, and social life.

It’s good to make new friends and socialize, but remember life at IIT Kanpur is very rigorous and not a single moment should be wasted on useless activities.

What does it feel like to fail in a course at IIT Kanpur?

PU
Pranav Upadhyay Posted On : April 19th, 2023
Aerospace engineering ,IIT KGP

I know a friend who failed a first-semester course at IIT Kanpur. Although it was a minor subject, the entire process was very tiresome.

He had failed a wonderful Morning Exercise (PE101) course. This course is a very futile course wherein twice a week you are supposed to go for sports for an hour in the evening. The ones who are good at sports are selected for the institute sports team, while the rest are sent to NCC.

The worst part about this course is that although it carries no credits, you fail the course if you have less than 75% attendance. Many top rankers had to stay after graduation to complete the course.

My friends had taken leave to represent India at IOI 2007. She failed to maintain the attendance criteria and eventually failed in the course. It discouraged her a lot and she was worried about losing her KVPY scholarship.

She decided to resolve this issue and approached the dean of student affairs (DOSA), who was also the official instructor for this course. Prof. Prawal Sinha assured her that he will be resolving the issue for her. The procedure was indeed troublesome and she had to run from office to office for months. She even wrote to the directors and key meeting DOSA.

Finally, her efforts were fruitful and she managed to change her grades. She was relieved but the entire process tired her out.
