How difficult is it to convert to IIM Shillong? How easy/difficult is the GDPI round?

SB

The level of difficulty is subjective and varies from person to person. IIM Shillong used to conduct a case-study-based GD. This is unique as very few top B-Schools have case-study-based GD.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, IIM Shillong is taking online interviews. One of my friends had her interview last year. The group discussion round didn’t happen due to the pandemic.

There were two panelists present for the interview. They asked her questions regarding her work experience, her academics, her hobbies, etc. My friend has an average profile and she couldn’t answer a few questions during the interview as well. Despite these factors, she was able to convert the call.

Is IIM Shillong good enough? Can others like IIM Ranchi/Rohtak overtake it due to its locational disadvantage.

IIM Shillong

If you are considering pursuing an MBA from IIM Shillong, you should definitely go ahead and apply. Your salary prospects after completing an MBA from IIM Shillong will likely be significantly better. However, if you are not confident in your ability to prepare for the CAT as well as you did previously, or if your motivation is not at its highest, it may be best to wait and give the exam another shot when you are better prepared and more motivated.

Motivation can be a fickle thing, and it is important to take advantage of it when it is present. Ultimately, the decision to pursue an MBA from IIM Shillong or to wait and give the CAT another try is a personal one that will depend on your individual circumstances and goals.

Which is a better IIM among IIM Indore, IIM Shillong, and IIM Ranchi?

RS
Radhika Srivastava Posted On : January 9th, 2023
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (Graduated 2019)

Each of them has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. And, instead of choosing the oldest college or the highest package as the criterion, students should conduct a SWOT analysis to see which colleges best align with their long-term goals.

IIM Indore: Because of its age, it is regarded as a premium choice among the student fraternity. However, a closer examination reveals that the batch size of 600+ is a grave trap for students with mediocre backgrounds. With a large batch size, you have little chance of being shortlisted by big brands appearing in their report. However, getting into an older college with a good reputation will work out in the long run if one works hard in the corporate world.

IIM Shillong: Founded in 2008, not long before the new IIMs, it has its own interviewing process rather than the CAP. Both the new IIMs and Shillong are progressing at the same rate. On the other hand, the state of affairs in the world. This is primarily due to logistical constraints; recruiters for IIM grads are typically top-level managers. Each minute counts for top-level executives, and losing time for travel is the last thing they want to do.

IIM Ranchi: One of the country's fastest-growing IIMs, it has seen phenomenal growth in recent years. IIM Ranchi has outperformed Shillong in a short period of time. IIM Ranchi has two flagship courses, PGDM and PGDHRM, and is the only IIM that offers HR-specific courses. With most of the early alumni in higher HR positions, they have an advantage over other colleges in convincing them to bring companies to campus. As a result, their placement is improved, and with smaller batch sizes, everyone has nearly equal opportunity. However, IIM Ranchi has its own constraints, as it is still operating from a temporary campus. IIM Ranchi is the slowest to build its own campus.

Why is it that MBA coaching classes always suggest joining new IIMs (including IIM Shillong) over other top colleges like NITIE, MDI, NM, etc.? Do they have any ulterior motive behind this?

IIM Shillong

It is likely that the institute you are considering wants to increase the number of its students who are accepted into the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) because the IIM brand holds a lot of value in the eyes of prospective students. However, it is important to do your own research about the institute, especially by talking to current students, to make sure it is the right fit for you. Even if an institute has a high number of students accepted into IIMs, it may not necessarily mean that it is the best option for you. It is always important to consider all of your options and make a decision that is best for you.

IIMs can be a good option for pursuing an MBA for several reasons. First, the tag, which provides support and guidance to newer IIMs, can help ensure that these institutes have a well-tested teaching methodology and offer high-quality education. Additionally, the smaller batch sizes at new IIMs can provide students with more individualized attention and a more personal learning experience. New IIMs may also have decent placements, and they often have the support of the government, which can provide additional resources and stability.

Furthermore, NITIE (National Institute of Industrial Engineering) is often considered a top choice for operations, but if you are open to making a decision about your field of study after your first year of MBA, new IIMs may be a good bet for you. Overall, it is important to consider all of your options and do thorough research to determine which institute is the best fit for you.

If I transferred at IIM Shillong and I'm being waitlisted at Trichy, which one should I choose? I'm interested in marketing.

If you are interested in Marketing, IIM Shillong is an excellent option. It follows a thorough course structure and credit system which allows students to choose domain-specific electives according to their preference. The elective choices available are ample and include credits across Operation, Marketing, Finance, Strategy, etc.

IIM Shillong placements are great for Marketing. During 2022 placements, the highest CTC offered for the sales and marketing domain was INR 34.07 LPA.

How is life at IIM Shillong?

SB
Sanchita Basu Posted On : September 14th, 2022
PGDM in General Management, Indian Institute of Management Shillong

IIM Shillong offers a good campus experience. The professors are friendly, supportive, and well-qualified. You can get their help regarding any academic-related problems. The departmental library has an excellent collection of books.  Peer-to-peer learning opportunities are ample, thanks to the fairly heterogeneous mix of student backgrounds.

Staying on the IIM Shillong campus is somewhat surreal. Waking up to clouds forming just outside of the window or double rainbows making a bridge between two mountain tops are regular occurrences.

How good is IIM Shillong's PGPEX programme and how good are its placements?

SR
Satish Rai Posted On : February 20th, 2021
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (2022)

According to the reviews of several IIM Shillong PGPEx students, the program is not a good-rated course, considering the facilities and opportunities provided by the institute. Several students have regretted their decision of choosing the PGPEx program, and the points below state a list of reasons supporting the cause.

  • It does not provide an IIM-grade placement for the PGPEx programme. No placement assistance is being provided by the institute for the aid of students. There were several instances in which students had to manage to get internships by themselves and even jobs through off-campus opportunities.
  • The institute does not allow the use of the PGP database to invite companies to the campus for placement.
  • The overall fee for the course is currently more than 18 Lakhs for just 14 months, which is a hefty amount. Having a loan for the same creates a tension of a heavy EMI in the minds of students.
  • The location of the institute stands out to be a disadvantage because several companies don’t prefer to go so far as to recruit IIM graduates.
  • There are quite a good number of students from the program who fail to obtain a good enough internship, and so placement stands in danger. These students usually have a huge EMI against their educational loan, and they are left with no positive option.

The table below shows the placement statistics of the previous years:

Particulars

Statistics

Highest Salary

27 LPA

Average Salary

17.4 LPA

Median Salary

17.8 LPA

To summarize, choosing the right institute and the correct program from it is a major decision, and students need to be extremely realistic in it. Not able to pay the loan can have serious consequences as the government has strict rules for defaulters. The best possible chance should be opted for, or else it would create a huge impact on the career.

IIM Shillong

IIM Shillong recently completed its 2022 placements drive and was able to place all of its students in the PGP 2020-2022 batch. The highest package offered during these placements was INR 55.22 LPA, while the average package was INR 23.10 LPA and the median package was INR 22.28 LPA. A total of 197 recruiters visited the campus during the placements, and 117 Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) were made.

It is worth noting that the highest package saw a significant increase of 72.56% in 2022 compared to the previous year, while the average package decreased by 16.95% and the number of recruiters declined by 14.06% compared to 2021. In addition, during the PGP summer placements for the 2021-2023 batch, a total of 240 offers were made to 240 participating students. The highest and average stipends offered during these summer placements were INR 3.50 lakh and INR 1.73 lakh, respectively. Overall, it appears that IIM Shillong had a successful placements drive in 2022, with a high percentage of students being placed and relatively competitive salaries being offered.

How is IIM Shillong for HR in terms of placements, roles offered, and recruiting companies? Also, how many students from then entire batch opt for HR as a specialization?

MM
Muskan Mittal Posted On : February 5th, 2021
Former Ph.D candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow

If you have decided to take up Human Resources as your specialization then your top priority should be options such as XLRI, TISS, SCMHRD, and MDI. Beyond these options the placement opportunities in other colleges for the HR domain are limited and you have to struggle to bag good offers. Even top IIM’s receive very limited opportunities for the domain of Human resources.

A total of 170 students were there in the 2020 batch at IIM Shillong. Out of the 185 offers made, only 7% of them were from Human Resources & operations domain combined.

The highest package received by the students in this domain was 48.5 LPA. Some of the companies that visited for the particular domains were D.E. Shaw, Moglix, TATA Steel, Tillomed Laboratories, and Titan. An increase in the package offered was recorded in this season by 42.5%.

It must be noted that very few students opt for HR as a career option in IIM Shillong. You will not find great opportunities in this domain.

What is it like to be a student at IIM Shillong?

An average student's daily itinerary looks something like this:

8:00 am - You may find yourself regretting not getting enough sleep the night before. The sound of alarms fills the corridors as everyone wakes up. One person usually gets up first and makes sure the rest of the group is also up.

8:30 - Breakfast is not optional. The classes are tough and the weather is cold, so it's important to have energy. You'll probably eat Idlis, parathas, upma, or whatever else is on the menu for the day.

8:59 - You may find yourself running at top speed towards class, as the door closes at exactly 9:00 and the attendance sheet will have a sad blank space where your name should be. Attendance is very important in MBA colleges.

Each class is 1.5 hours long. There is a 15-minute break between classes, which is the perfect time to discuss college gossip, have a cup of tea, go through pre-reads, or work on PowerPoint presentations.

6:00 pm - By this time, you'll be exhausted and would probably give anything for a bed. Luckily, it's tea time, so you can forget your troubles for a little while and enjoy some snacks. The rest of the evening will be spent working on club committee tasks. There is always something that needs to be taken care of, whether it's an upcoming event or an article that needs to be written. However, most days you don't mind the work because it helps bring everyone together.

The "M" in MBA could stand for "meetings." There are so many of them - study group meetings, club meetings, competition meetings, and more. On the plus side, you get to know everyone very well.

By 12:00 am, you'll be tired but determined. The night canteen will help fuel you through the rest of the night. You'll have assignments to submit and pre-reads to get through. Many students use notebooks or apps to make to-do lists to stay organized. It's a great feeling to check off everything on your list.

On the weekends, things are a little more relaxed. You'll still have work to do, but you can choose your own pace. If you've worked hard during the week, the weekend is a good time to go on trips.

There will also be various events organized by the different clubs, such as Marketing, Operations, Finance, HR, and Environment. These clubs work hard to come up with fun and creative versions of concepts. Together, students make everything run smoothly. Committees help make your MBA experience as comfortable as possible. The Hostel Committee might organize surprise events like Sunday Biryani, while the Cultural Committee ensures that no festival goes uncelebrated. The Sports Committee also finds ways to engage even those who are not particularly interested in sports.

IIM Shillong is always buzzing with activity. Everyone is always busy doing something, and it is these little things that help make them the amazing managers they want to be. A day at IIM Shillong is filled with a sense of belonging and a longing to be in Shillong.
