How is the hostel food at SVNIT?

Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : January 8th, 2024

The hostel food at SVNIT, like the one at any other college, can be best described as boring and repetitive.

Each hostel is handled by a different mess contractor, which is why the food quality may vary with the hostel. But one thing is for sure that the private contractors try to extract as much profit as they can. The menu predominantly contains Gujarati dishes, which may not be to the liking of some people. The meals have limited options, and one has no choice but to eat whatever is available. The hostels do not serve non-veg meals, but some hostels serve eggs on a day of the week/ on Sundays.

On a particular day, every alternate week, the mess remains closed for dinner. This is the perfect time to explore some restaurants or street foods outside of the campus. The food in Surat is delicious and has a lot of variety. On weekends, many families gather on the footpaths of the Dumas road along the SVNIT walls. There, one gets food stalls with different kinds of veg and non veg options. These stalls serve very affordable dishes. You can also ask your seniors for their favorite restaurants in the city.

The hostel food of SVNIT is manageable, but a bit boring.

What is the mess menu of SVNIT, Surat?

SJ

The food quality is better for girls as compared to boys. Overall, the mess food is decent. You’ll adapt to mess food after some time.

The menu keeps on changing after a month or two. It is finalized after a discussion between the students and the hostel authorities. The students are also given the freedom to change their mess. The breakfast menu comprises items like Poha, Puri Bhaji, Idli, Medu Vada, Aloo Tikki, etc. The menu also contains corn flakes, bread butter/jam, milk, tea and coffee.

Lunch consists of dal, vegetables, rice, roti and curd. Dinner consists of items like Khichdi, Methi Malai Matar, Chole Puri, Aloo-Onion Paratha, Pav Bhaji, Biryani, Vegetables, Dal, Rice, Roti, Salad, etc. Ice cream is served for dinner, but not on a daily basis.

The mess food tastes best during the initial days/weeks. As time passes by, it starts to feel boring and kind of repetitive. Non vegetarian food is not served in any mess, but eggs might be served if majority students require it. Ice creams, Nimbu Pani and Fruit Salads are included in the menu during summers.

During festivals, once or twice every semester, special meals are served in the messes. This meal contains some special items like Jalebi-Rabri. From second year onwards for boys, and from first year itself for girls, there is a mess off day for dinner every alternate week, with prior notice.

Enjoy your SVNIT journey to the fullest, and do not worry much about mess food as it is quite decent.

AS
Amit Sharma Posted On : January 5th, 2024
Studied at NIT Surat

Here are some things you should know about SVNIT before joining the college-

  1. SVNIT has one of the best hostels in India among technical institutes. The hostels for third and final year boys are great, but first and second year hostels are also good.
  2. It is up to you to make new friends by interacting with people in your hostel, your classes, and the college clubs and societies.
  3. The professors are decent in some of the departments, and not up to the mark in others. First and second year students are mostly taught by teaching assistants. It is your responsibility to gain knowledge from your teachers.
  4. The college gym facility is excellent. The Badminton, Lawn Tennis and Basketball courts are decent. There is a huge Cricket cum Football ground on campus, but it is not maintained properly by the college administration.
  5. Surat City has really good food joints, especially if you are a Gujarati. The hostel mess serves decent food. Initially the mess food feels really likable, but then it starts to become repetitive and boring. This is the case for every hostel.
  6. Every hostel has a night canteen facility, and there is a nice central canteen within the campus.
  7. You won’t be spoon fed, so to get decent grades you’ll have to make a study routine for yourself. No one will tell you to study.
  8. With a decent study routine, you can easily score 7-8 CGPA, and even go on to score 9 CGPA with some extra effort.
  9. There’s plenty of hangout spots around the college, ‘Galla’ being a popular one, just outside the campus. There’s plenty of restaurants in Surat, some are affordable, while some are high-end.

Surat is an amazing city, and SVNIT will offer you a lifetime experience.

How are the hostels at SVNIT?

JS
Jay Shah Posted On : January 3rd, 2024
studied at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat

SVNIT has a good hostel facility.

  1. The hostels have all the basic facilities ranging from bedding to laundry.
  2. Boys are allowed to stay outside hostel premises till 11 pm, but freshers have to wait for around 3 months to acquire such freedom.
  3. Hostel rooms have a good LAN connection and Wi-Fi facility.
  4. Most of the hostel buildings are newly constructed.
  5. Some hostels have CCF (computer lab) facility. But it does not work properly all the time.
  6. The campus is located beside a beautiful lake, and birds like peacocks and parrots are a common sight within the college premises.
  7. The hostels have decent sports facilities, and besides, the college has a Student Activity Center where there are facilities for various sports like basketball, tennis, badminton, chess, etc.
  8. The SAC has a good gym, and some of the hostels have their own gyms as well.
  9. The entire campus, including the hostels have a zero ragging policy.

Thus, SVNIT hostels are good. You can consider this institution for your engineering studies.

How is SVNIT for chemical engineering?

AS
Amit Sharma Posted On : January 6th, 2024
Studied at NIT Surat

I am an alumnus of B.Tech Chemical at SVNIT.

According to me, it all depends on your interest. This branch fills at the end, at least this was the scenario when I joined SVNIT. But it offers decent placement opportunities.

Unlike other institutions, the major courses like Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, Fluid Flow, etc. are all taken up by Professors and Associate Professors, and not Teaching Assistants. Teaching is up to the mark, given that you are interested in the subjects.

Core companies like Reliance, Cairn, GNFC, BASF, Lupin, etc. visit the department and recruit most of the B.Techs at decent pay packages. Some students crack GATE and opt for higher studies in India, and some others go on to do research work in reputed universities in the USA.

This is all the important information regarding Chemical Engineering at SVNIT.

How's ECE at SVNIT Surat?

AS
Amit Sharma Posted On : January 8th, 2024
Studied at NIT Surat

I am a fresher student of B.Tech ECE at SVNIT. But I will try to answer this question to the best of my knowledge.

At other engineering colleges, ECE is the second most preferred branch after CSE/ IT. But at SVNIT, Mechanical is the second most preferred branch after CSE, followed by Electrical and ECE. It is not that the ECE of SVNIT is subpar, rather the Mechanical of this college is way ahead.

Mechanical has a top notch faculty, a huge class strength, core recruiters, and it is one of the oldest branches of this college. The ECE faculty teaches well, but not as good as other core branch faculties. The B.Tech ECE students have to work a lot to score above 9 CGPA. The fests and clubs are almost the same for all branches. ECE is vast and interesting. It covers not just electronics and communication, but also programming and electrical to a certain extent.

The placements are best for CSE, followed by Mechanical due to the presence of core companies near Surat. No big core companies come to the ECE department for placements, but still, the placements are average. Moreover, there’s always an option of off campus placements.

This is all about the ECE branch at SVNIT. It is a decent branch of this college.

Is ECE at SVNIT Surat that bad?

Bhaskar Das Posted On : January 6th, 2024

ECE is not an ideal department for someone who doesn’t know about the challenges that are present in Engineering. It is not the best department for learning and self discovery. The teaching is not good in the department.

But for someone with a passion for this branch, it is fair enough to choose ECE over other fields. Moreover, SVNIT carries the NIT tag, which is of great value. But without any particular interest or passion for this field, it is difficult to get through ECE at SVNIT.

The faculty is not supportive and Engineering is tiring in itself. Thus, I would recommend you choose B.Tech ECE at SVNIT only if you have a keen interest in this field.
