Which is better for metallurgical engineering, IIT Indore or IIT Bhubaneswar?

SS
Surbhi Sahu Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B.Tech Electrical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (2022)

IIT Bhubaneswar is renowned in the metallurgical engineering and material science department. It has well qualified and experienced teaching faculty. As IIT Kharagpur is the mentor institute of IIT Bhubaneswar, the coursework follows IIT Kharagpur’s curriculum. IIT Bhubaneswar is located in Odisha's mineral state and provides numerous opportunities for essential experience in fieldwork and job sites. According to 2019 placement highlights, 90% of students from metallurgical engineering and material science department got placed. The average CTC offered was around 11.4 LPA.

Now for IIT Indore, it has gained rapid popularity for its coding community and the quality of the computer science curriculum. This resulted in a step back at the development of other core branches, mainly metallurgical engineering. In 2019 the placement rate at IIT Indore was 99% with an average CTC of 16.06 LPA.

The fact is that there are not many students interested to enroll this field of engineering. This results in a lot of the students opting for electives/optional subjects like coding, data science, etc. and then get placed in a non-core job (not linked with metallurgical engineering).

Based on these above factors, Bhubaneswar is preferred than Indore as it is situated and connected to Steel and Mining Industry and hence provides more job opportunities.

Is RVCE CSE better than metallurgy at IIT Bhubaneswar?

SA
Sanchit Alekh Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B.Tech Computer Science Indian Institute of Technology Patna (2023)

It depends on which course you are interested in. Both subjects have their own concept, CSE is coding based and Metallurgy is based on chemistry. But among all the private engineering colleges RVCE is famous in Bangalore. Most of the students prefer RVSC college for CSE.

If you want to compare these two educational institutes on the basis of their infrastructure, placement wide, laboratory management, and laboratory construction RVCE will be the advanced one as compares to IIT Bhubaneswar. RVCE  offers an average salary package of 11-15 lakhs per annum to CSE students whereas IIT Bhubaneswar offers 11.44 lakhs per annum for metallurgy and material science students.

RVCE library consists of 1720 books and the laboratory has 316 computer systems. Whereas IIT Bhubaneswar being a new IIT is still in the developing phase in terms of infrastructure. Also, CSE offers more job opportunities as compared to Metallurgy.

Recruiters like Yahoo, Amazon, PayPal, Microsoft, etc. visit RVCE to find potential candidates for their company. Both the institute’s design syllabus in such a way to crack any entrance examination like GATE for higher studies but RVCE is a little more advance as they have their various students organization like CSI chapter and IEE students chapter.

What is the scope of metallurgical and materials engineering at IIT Roorkee?

AR
Anusha Rahaman Posted On : April 17th, 2023
Lived in Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

The scope of Metallurgical and Materials engineering or that of any engineering depends largely on where your inclinations lie and how much you are willing to work for it. There are several rare cases wherein a student of Biotechnology, the least preferred branch of engineering, is offered to a good company with a very high package.

IIT Roorkee and in fact, most IITs have low core opportunities but many non-core opportunities. That being said, it’s advisable for an IITian to learn to code for future security. IIT Roorkee offers the perfect culture to learn to code.

It’s a well-known fact that Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, was also a BTech in metallurgy from IIT KGP. So I would like to conclude by saying that even if there are no opportunities at your door, create one!

Should I choose NIT Trichy for CSE or IIT Roorkee for metallurgy? Why?

AR
Anusha Rahaman Posted On : April 11th, 2023
Lived in Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

My brother was in the CSE branch of NIT Trichy and based on his experience, here are a few pointers:

  • The professors are extremely learned and experienced and impart quality education
  • The relative grading system establishes peer pressure, and as a result, there is tough competition among the students
  • IIT Roorkee is well known for its rich coding culture that is promoted by student-driven and institute funded clubs. These clubs give you additional knowledge on web designing, App development, and game development that might be useful later in
  • The CSE department is one of the most coveted branches, and being a part of one will inculcate a sense of privilege.
  • The hostel and campus life is decent with all necessary amenities.
  • A total of 5 fests are held throughout the year and are totally funded and organized by the institute. The institute is located in an area that helps you explore nearby tourist spots like Pondicherry and Ooty.

You won’t ever regret choosing NIT CSE.

How is materials engineering at IIT Delhi?

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 10th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Some key points pertaining to the newly launched branch, Materials Engineering at IIT Delhi are

  • Small alumni base: Because it has been established recently, it lacks an extensive alumni pool and has a few seniors only
  • Curriculum: Being the recent most branch, the curriculum is well-updated in accordance with industry standards. Moreover, the workload is average and gives you time to focus on extra activities.
  • Opportunities: The best part about this branch is the plethora and diversity of opportunities it has to offer. You are free to explore your area of interest along with the core coursework. It’s best for those who are not aware of their passion.
  • Placements: Very few core offers are made to BTech in comparison to MTech students. But non-core opportunities are plenty for those seeking jobs right after graduation. Additionally, there are opportunities for higher education, research work, and entrepreneurship also.
  • Faculty: The professors are keen to improve the image of the department and work passionately to do so. Their enthusiasm in turn is a driving force for the students to excel.
  • Batch size: The branch has a very less intake with a batch of only around 40 students. However, this facilitates better student-student relations as well as better student-faculty relations.

Overall the department is new and has a much more interesting curriculum and diverse opportunities. Its research culture is almost at par with that of CS, Engineering Physics, or biotechnology.
