Which should I choose between Jadavpur Univerity and IIEST Shibpur?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : October 17th, 2023
Lives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Here is some information on both these colleges. At the end, the choice is yours to make-

  • Academics- The curriculum, faculty and labs for EE are good at both the colleges. But for CSE and ECE, JU is a far better choice.
  • Teaching Quality- Even if some faculty members aren't up to the INI standards, they can’t be replaced as IIEST is a government college. Because of this, JU has a far better quality of teaching.
  • Library- The reading room at IIEST is far better. It is huge with lots of databases and ample reading space. But JU has a far better digital library system.
  • Infrastructure- The infrastructure at IIEST Shibpur is being developed at a good rate. Its hostels desperately need improvement and expansion.
  • Placements- JU consistently outperforms IIEST in placements.
  • Campus Life- IIEST Shibpur does not have a campus life, and senior-junior interaction is negligible. The campus is lifeless in this sense. JU has a vibrant campus life, but with so much happening on campus, you’ll need to draw your limits and not get diverted.

Both the colleges are good, but JU is the better choice.

Should I take the ETC dept. in IIEST Shibpur or the EE dept.? Why?

RG

The choice of the department for an engineering degree is a decision for one’s own career, which runs a lifetime. Among the above two options, it is better to choose EE than ETC, considering several factors discussed below.

  • The whole point of the choice is done keeping the college as constant, i.e. - IIEST Shibpur. Now a day, there are mass preferences and several misconceptions wherein people think about the consequences. Instead, you should consider your own capability of working on that specified stream, and how to be better at it.
  • You should go through the course structure of both the branches before choosing the stream and then make a decision. In IIEST Shibpur, both EE and ETC have an excellent reputation.
  • Electrical Engineering in IIEST has better opportunities, making use of the lectures of excellent professors of the electrical department. The laboratories of EE are a bit better than those of ETC.
  • For students in Electrical Engineering, there are chances of working in association with Civil and Mechanical Engineers, being in high profile projects. Even EE students become in-charge of National and State-level thermal grids, which is a huge position to work at.
  • For students in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, most jobs are generally indoors, including Electronics Systems analytics, Electronics Design, etc. ETE, being close to CSE, also offers good tech giant IT jobs to students having sufficient programming knowledge.
  • For GATE aspirants, ETC students get some amount of preference due to less difficulty in the syllabus. The syllabus mostly comprises subjects from their course, but for EE, there are subjects from both electrical and electronics, which becomes a huge syllabus to cover.
  • In Electrical Engineering, the rate of change of concepts is less with years, and so the degree shell life is 40-50 years. On the other hand, for ETC, the rate of change is quite fast, having a degree shell life of about 25-30 years, or even less.

These are some points that a candidate needs to consider before making a choice in the stream for IIEST Shibpur.

Is IIEST Shibpur worth joining?

VJ
Vikas Juneja Posted On : April 16th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

The definition of “worth joining” is different for different students as per their different situations.

For a home-state student:

  • It is worth joining because he/she is getting one of the best and prestigious colleges in West Bengal.
  • The college is located in a prime location. It is a nearby home and the family members are aware of the college.

For the other-state student:

  • It might turn out to be a good opportunity for the other state students. Here, many students who get a good score in JEE Main but fail to get a good percentage in boards end up getting rank in 20k.
  • IIEST Shibpur is new and not that popular in other states. Students from outside can join the college and get their chosen departments.
  • The main perk is the location and its ranking.

Many students regret joining the college, but with time their opinions changed. The reason is that they realize its brand name in West Bengal. Also, the college is slowly upgrading itself, and students see the growth taking place. Even the opportunities students get here are wide.

The Alumni network of this college is far better than any college. Even the companions are good. The placements are also improving.

Where is IIEST, Shibpur located?

SD
Sutripto Das Posted On : April 9th, 2021
Studied in IIEST, Shibpur (2019)

IIEST Shibpur is located in Howrah on the banks of the Hooghly river. Transportation is very easy, you can choose to travel by flights, trains or busses.

How to reach IIEST Shibpur:

  1. Flight: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is the nearest airport to IIEST. After landing there, you can take a taxi from the airport to reach IIEST.
  2. Train: There are two train stations, Sealdah Railway Station, and Howrah Railway Station. After arriving at either train station, you can take a bus from there to reach IIEST. You can take a minibus in red and yellow color from Howrah Railway Station.
  3. Bus: If you are thinking of arriving by bus you have to change buses to arrive at the IIEST. Usually, the bus route is not the favored one, you can take other means of transport to arrive at the destination.

Therefore, the route of IIEST is quite easy to reach. It is recommended, if you are asking any local about IIEST, then ask for B.E College instead of IIEST. The institute has two gates, if you are coming from the bus then get down to the first one and take a cab from there.

How are the hostels in the IIEST Shibpur?

NG
Nikhil Goswami Posted On : February 23rd, 2021
IIEST Shibpur

IIEST Shibpur is equipped with well-maintained accommodation facilities for the students to provide them the comfort of home.

  • Currently, the campus has 15 hostels or halls of residence. With the increase in the number of admissions every year, the management has decided to construct new hostels to accommodate the students.
  • For boys, separate halls of residence are allotted as per their years. 1st-year boys are allocated to hostel 8, 9, 10. Second-year boys are accommodated to hostel 7, 11, or 15. Then, from the third year onwards, students reside in a big hall of residence.
  • On the other hand, girls are allocated 2 hostels. First-year girls reside in Nivedita Hall while from 2nd year onwards, they live in Pandya Hall.
  • In the initial first year, 4 seater rooms are allotted to students. The rooms are spacious enough for 4 students. While from third year onwards students have an option to choose from a single-seater room to multiple seaters.
  • The college has taken full care to provide a neat, clean and hygienic environment to the students. Every hall of residence has its own mess, common room, carrom, table tennis room, badminton court, etc.
  • The wifi facility is available 24*7 with high-speed internet.
  • Many other facilities like newspapers, washing machines, etc. are also there. Apart from that, the management keeps on updating the facilities to make the students feel better.
  • Lunch and dinner are provided in each mess of every hostel. Initially, they have started to provide breakfast but you have to buy evening snacks. You will also get a feast once a week during fests.

If you are relocating, you need to get nothing to move in the hostel. If you want some extra comfort then only you need to buy which is also available in the nearby market.

Are there any paying guests or flats nearby IIEST Shibpur for students?

PB
Pihu Banerjee Posted On : April 1st, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

Yes, there are several hostels and PG near 1st and 2nd gate. You can stay there if you cannot cope up with the culture of the hostels and rich mess foods. The points stated below are a brief discussion about the availability of PGs and private hostels outside the campus of IIEST Shibpur.

  • Many students visit the PGs and mess to inspect their quality of food and living. According to them, those are quite good, clean, and worthy of staying.
  • Some PGs offer food to students in their package, while some don’t. It also depends upon the preference of the students.
  • There are good food available in nearby restaurants and street–side food stalls.
  • Walking around the regions nearby, there are advertisements and contacts hanging in the nearby food stalls and stationery shops. Students can easily contact them, visit, and choose as per their wish.

So, there are enough options for students who don’t prefer staying at campus hostels and can stay at PGs and flats available at nearby locations.

Where can one find the 1st year syllabus of IIEST, Shibpur?

SJ
Sandip Jana Posted On : March 17th, 2021
Studied Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

The syllabus of IIEST, Shibpur has remained pretty much the same over the years. At http://www.iiests.ac.in/images/all pdf/1-5STRUCTURES.pdf, you can find the structure for the 1st year.

The professor reveals the syllabus when the course begins (exact names of topics that will be covered in that semester). This syllabus keeps changing each year. Maybe it's not the same syllabus students had earlier.

The professor either gives the paper directly after the course begins, or others do not have a habit of not giving it. You can feel free to ask your professor to give you the syllabus document in such a situation.

How are the civil placements in IIEST, Shibpur?

SD
Shubham Day Posted On : March 17th, 2021
B.E. Information Technology, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

My sister was in the batch of (2014-18) at IIEST Shibpur. There were 84 students in her batch, 19 chose a dual degree, and about 60 students were eligible for placements. The major recruiters were M.N Dastur, ZS Associates, HSBC, CGI information systems and management consultants, etc.

The recent placement highlights for Civil Engineering at the institute are as follows.

Placement Average

75%

Highest CTC

12 LPA

Lower CTC

3.5 LPA

Job Roles

Graduate Engineer Trainee, Junior Structural Designer

This is the placement scenario of the Civil branch at IIEST Shibpur. The number of students applied for placements also matters. Due to their training for GATE, ESE or CAT, etc, or simply the lack of interest in private work, there are a number of students who don’t appear willingly on-campus placement.
