How good is IIT Hyderabad? I am getting Electrical Engineering at IITH? How is the campus life?

IIT Hyderabad is a new IIT that has been growing at a fast pace and is expected to reach the level of older IITs in no time. Its EE Department is excellent with a good updated curriculum. Unlike older IITs, the courses covered are industry relevant and that’s what sets it apart from the EE department of other IITs.

Its syllabus includes various Electronics as well as Electrical courses. Additionally, it contains Machine Learning, sound processing using Python and R, Internet of Things(IoT), and home automation also.

The courses are much more advanced in comparison to courses offered in the EE Department of other IITs that just revolve around generators, motors, and outdated heavy machines. The new IITs may lack in other aspects but their curriculum is modern and useful.

Infrastructure-wise, IIT Hyderabad is a bit lacking considering the fact that it's still in the developing phase. The hostels of the new campus are great with radiant cooling systems. However, the campus lacks greenery and much-needed sports facilities.

What is the academic difference between IIT Hyderabad and other IITs?

PK
Pravesh Kumar Posted On : May 9th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad has 2 major academic differences that set it apart from other IITs. These are

  • Fractal system: Under this, the date of exams and distribution of marks is decided by the professors and nothing is decided beforehand.
  • Double Major: Students of IIT Hyderabad can have 2 degrees in BTech and this is called the double major system. The second major can be done by getting extra credits from another department of interest.

There are many other aspects of the academic culture at IIT Hyderabad such as

Holistic Education:  IIT Hyderabad focuses on holistic education and does not limit its students to one specialization only. This is enforced through free electives from other engineering, science, arts, and design departments. Some of these courses cover photography, filmmaking, clay modeling, Madhubani painting, etc.

Entrepreneurship: Another unique feature of IIT Hyderabad is its Entrepreneurship minor program. This is open to all IIT Hyderabad students and the courses are taught by industrialists who are entrepreneurs themselves.

So academically, IIT Hyderabad has unique traits such as the fractal system and the double major system.

Is it worth giving 10 lakhs for an M.Tech self-sponsored in IIT Hyderabad?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : May 16th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

I think it’s highly illogical to charge such high fees for an MTech self-sponsored at IIT Hyderabad. Usually, they consider industry-sponsored and self-sponsored as equal. However, the fees for sponsored candidates are always higher than for MHRD candidates. So I would recommend you to clear GATE or get into an industry in order to do your Mtech as 10 Lakhs for an MTech is not worth it and might put you in a financial hole. In many cases, self-sponsored students are considered inferior by the professors.

Ultimately, go for it only if you are financially stable and can afford it. Else, go for other options like GATE, industrial jobs, or many other NITs and IITs.

Can I attend classes at IIT Hyderabad as a days scholar, my house is near to the campus and I don't want to stay in hostel?

SA
Shruti Agarwal Posted On : May 9th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)
No, according to the rules of IIT Hyderabad, it’s compulsory for a BTech student to stay in hostels as a full-time resident and thus you cannot attend your classes as a day scholar and go back home. You can visit your home daily and there are no restrictions on that. However, irrespective of where you stay, you will have to pay full hostel/mess fees like other students. For complete growth at IIT Hyderabad or any other IIT, students have to stay in a hostel for 4 years. Classroom learning is not enough for their development. The additional club meetings, student activities, events, and sports activities that take place after classes are over help in the holistic development of its students. So, to make the most out of your student life at IIT Hyderabad, it’s best to stay in hostels and enjoy.
