Should I join IIM Jammu or continue working? Work experience is 3.5 years.

The ideal number of years of work experience for an Indian business school's standard 2-year MBA program is between 2-3. However, in the United States, the ideal work experience for the MBA program is 5 years or more. Also, in India, if you can get into top schools, your higher work experience can be compensated. With this work experience, IIM Jammu will never be a good fit.

If you drop this year and try again next year, your work experience will be around 5 years, and the funnel will need to be even narrower for the 2-year program. Another option is to attend a foreign business school, but this will be expensive.

In light of the fact that an MBA is more of an investment than an academic achievement, you are advised to proceed with caution. Furthermore, the program moves at a breakneck pace. Make a thoughtful decision by taking some time to think things through.

Which one is better, IIM Jammu or Great Lakes Chennai?

Some students pursue an MBA/PGPM to learn about various aspects of business and management; others pursue it to network, and still, others pursue it to gain expertise in a specific field. However, everyone does it in order to succeed for the whole of their long career and advance their professional prospects. Management positions, consultants, human resources professionals, and entrepreneurs are all possible career paths.

Having said that, an MBA/PGDM program should be objectively evaluated as well as subjectively positioned. The structure, outcomes, exposure, and career services of the program should be updated on a regular basis.

  • Looking at Great Lakes Chennai, both its PGPM (with 2+ years of work experience) and PGDM (with 0-2 years of work experience) programs are designed to incorporate global recurring changes into themselves, to transform management graduates into future-ready executives, and to instill in graduates a sense of compassion and social responsibility, both of which are essential for managers of tomorrow.

Great Lakes' application-oriented teaching-learning pedagogy and holistic learning environment enable it to provide its graduates with excellent career opportunities.

For PGDM, the average CTC offered to the Class of 2022 increased by 13% to INR 12.5 LPA, with a multinational consulting firm offering the highest domestic CTC of INR 25.8 LPA. Bain, McKinsey, JP Morgan Chase, Adobe, Nestlé, EY India, HP, ITC, PayU, Accenture, Cognizant, ICRA, Crisil, TAS, Société Générale, Deloitte, Swiggy, Standard Chartered, and Wells Fargo are some notable recruiters. The Class of 2022 (PGPM) had an excellent season, with the batch's average CTC increasing by 31% from 13.6 lakhs p.a. to 17.86 lakhs p.a. A major multinational software products corporation offered the batch the highest domestic CTC of 35 lakhs per year. Major recruiters such as Microsoft, Accenture, ADP, Bain, Bristlecone, Deloitte, Cognizant, EY GDS, FedEx, HCL, Infosys, Incedo, Optum, Tiger Analytics, Zoom, and ZS Associates participated in the season.

  • When it comes to IIM Jammu, despite being a relatively new institute, it has come a long way, with significantly improved and fairly decent placements available to its graduates.

While the IIM brand is one of the most obvious advantages of IIM Jammu, leveraging the IIM brand would take years. People should not join the institute solely for the IIM brand. During the 2022 placement drive, 119 companies participated and 217 students applied for placements, resulting in a high number of placements.

The entire procedure was carried out virtually. The average CTC increased by 13% to INR 13.53 LPA, with the highest CTC at INR 32 LPA. The institute also released its summer internship placement report for the class of 2022, in which 100% of students were offered internships and the highest stipend was INR 3 Lakhs, while the average stipend was INR 44.8K. Accenture, Amazon, Aditya Birla Group, BYJU's, Deloitte, CollegeDunia, HDFC Bank, Infosys, ICICI Bank, Optum, and PwC were among the recruiters who took part in the 2022 placement drive.

The first choice between the two is GLIM, Chennai, which offers a fantastic and promising career.

Should IIMs opened in 2015 (Jammu Sirmaur Vizag Nagpur) be preferred over IMT Ghaziabad?

No, I don't think the new IIMs should be preferred over a well-established institute like IMT Ghaziabad. I have seen many instances wherein people forgo offers from new IIMs to join IMT Ghaziabad.

The IIM brand has failed to convince students to join the new IIMs for a diploma. A cursory glance at the low placement figures last year at some of the relatively newer IIMs (Raipur, Rohtak, Ranchi, Kashipur, and Udaipur) when compared to their older counterparts, too, tells its own story.

Another important issue for management aspirants is that even if they are okay with the lack of infrastructure, full-time faculty members, and alumni, they cannot ignore the delayed start to the sessions at the new IIMs. While faculty members think that this time gap in starting operations can be bridged easily, students feel that they might lose out on their summer internships.

Which is better between IMI Delhi and IIM Jammu compared with respect to various parameters?

RN
Rajat Nagpal Posted On : January 11th, 2023
PGDM in Banking and Financial Services, International Management Institute (Graduated 2020)

You must select the parameters; in general, people may believe that IMI Delhi is a better option due to its location and the opportunities it offers. On the contrary, you may come across individuals who would prefer to have the IIM designation regardless of the cost.

So, if you prefer the IIM label above all else, IIM Jammu is the place for you. Nonetheless, given the fact that it is an IIM, there is no doubt about academics.

However, because it is located in the heart of the city, IMI Delhi has established its own legacy over the past 41 years. So, if you can overlook the IIM brand name in favor of the multitude of opportunities to transform your personality, expand your understanding, and have a good time in terms of social and campus life, IMI Delhi is the place for you.

If I switch from IIM Jammu to a better IIM when I convert from the waitlist, will I lose the money I paid to Jammu or will it get adjusted in the other IIM?

I see that you have got accepted into IIM Jammu but still are willing to switch to a better IIM.

Regarding the fees, lessening you will have to refer to the prospectus. I think there is a certain date beyond which there might be a fixed deduction.

But this process of deduction and refund will take place at IIM Jammu itself and does not concern the new IIM you will be joining.

So whichever institute you are joining next, the admission process and fees deposition will begin afresh.

Admission at IIM Jammu is a three-stage process. It comprises

  1. Shortlisting on the basis of CAT score
  2. WAT-PI round
  3. Final selection

Every IIM has its own criteria for selection. They generally follow different parameters for shortlisting the candidates. Weightage is given to academics, points for each level starting from X, XII, and graduation.

The CAT cutoff for a General Category Male at IIM Jammu is

  • Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension Percentile: 65
  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning Percentile: 65
  • Quantitative Ability Percentile: 65
  • Overall Percentile: 90

Now considering your profile, you must score a percentile between 80 and 90 to get a call letter from them.

Is it advisable to go for new IIM like IIM Jammu and do MBA? It is being mentored by IIM Lucknow so will placement be also mentored by them?

TG
Tanmay Ghosh Posted On : February 12th, 2024

IIM Lucknow does mentor IIM Jammu. But this mentorship extends only to the faculty, curriculum, and pedagogy of IIM Jammu. Most of the faculty of IIM Jammu and IIM Lucknow are the same. Also, the pedagogy and curriculum of both these colleges is the same. But IIM Lucknow does not look after the placements of IIM Jammu in any way.

It isn't correct to assume that the students of new IIMs aren’t as good as those of the old ones. The students of IIM Jammu have won several competitions. They are strong competitors for IIM A and B students.

Apart from this, IIM Jammu has a Student Exchange Program. It allows deserving students to complete a trimester at a European college. The placements of Jammu are on par with other baby IIMs. But you won’t get the same placements as the older IIMs. Finally, IIM Jammu carries the prestigious ‘IIM’ tag, which holds a lot of value in the industry.

The choice is completely yours, but I would personally recommend IIM Jammu for an MBA.
