Well, before answering this question, the heartiest gratitude to all the candidates who have cracked this toughest engineering entrance in India.
The main thing is that you must decide why do you want to join IIT. Is it only for the IIT tag, or you want to follow your passion?
The tagline of IIT is obviously important, but it works only if you are studious towards your dream. Otherwise, it becomes worthless as well as you will ruin the reputation of these institutes, that IIT.
Another important thing to be considered that if you are outstanding in CSE and gets the chance in IIT Dhanbad, then you will be to do more research, over-viewing the facts, like infrastructure and facilities of both of these institutes. However, BITs is generally better, and one of my friends was there for BITSAT 2017; the institute is really awesome.
Additionally, IIT Dhanbad is the old IITs, but it is still an IIT, and it gives the student a great height regarding their future career perspectives. It is properly funded still now and will be better in next year’s. But you should not expect a better life here than BITs Hyderabad. The main thing that should always be remembered is that good institutes always lead to a confident pathway, but you have to go alone in this pathway to fulfill your passion.
Thus, you must choose your branch first; after that, you can move forward.
In terms of pursuing electrical engineering, IIT Dhanbad would be the better option. In terms of placement, faculty, ranking, and academic excellence IIT Dhanbad is much better than NIT Calicut. Though both institutions have proven their excellence but few reasons to choose IIT Dhanbad are as follows:

IIT Dhanbad would be an excellent choice for mechanical engineering study, to sum up. With its well-established reputation for ages, qualified teachers, job prospects, and a well-equipped campus. It fosters an environment that is favorable for both academic and personal development.
My brother also filed an online anti-ragging affidavit recently. He too was confused because he was asked to fill the batch size although he hadn’t even started attending the classes. He randomly wrote 60 only to realize later that it was just a formality. Students need to focus on other details while filling out this form like their email ID, your name, your father's name, Institute to which they are getting admitted. Once you fill in all these details correctly you will receive a mail consisting of 4 pdf files namely:
All you need is the anti-aging undertaking of your parent or guardian and yours. Get this typed on a non-judicial stamp paper and then get it attested by a notary and submit it to the college.
No, one of my friends failed to get placed during campus placements at IIT Dhanbad. He got shortlisted for an interview in L&T after appearing for a written test. However, he did not attend the interview because he was already selected for off-campus placement for the role of AE(Technical) in EESL. It’s a PSU under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
Others were also successfully placed through off-campus placement. Out of 20 Gate students, 18 are placed in PSU, State, and Central Government sectors. Out of 20 Non-Gate students 15 students are placed in Coaching institutes, core private sector, private Engineering colleges, and Software companies through campus placements.
Students of IIT Dhanbad are able to prepare better for GATE, PSU, and CAT because of low academic pressure.
The Phase 1 of placement season 2022 went really well for IIT Dhanbad. The placement season commenced in December 2021. All the M.Tech CSE students got placed within a few days of Phase 1. Here are some details on their placements-
From this data one can conclude that the placements for M.Tech CSE are quite good at IIT Dhanbad.
I had the same choices in front of me, a few years back.
I consulted some seniors and decided to opt for IIT BHU Pharma. After a year, I changed my branch. One of my friends who also had these choices decided to go for IIT Dhanbad. Even he changed his branch after a year. I changed my branch and opted for Mechanical.
I would say both choices are equally good. For CAT/UPSC prep, these two branches are easier and will allow you more time for studies. Even if you want another branch, study hard so you can switch.
I wouldn’t recommend a drop. Both the IITs are good, and a year of preparation will allow you to switch to another branch. This way you’ll always have something to fall back on. But if you are determined to score higher in the next attempt, you may consider taking a drop. It’s very difficult to remain positive and motivated in a drop year, and the decision is a bit risky.
Whether to join or drop is your personal decision. But I would recommend you join any of these two courses/colleges.
First-year UG students are divided into groups 1 and 2.
During 1st sem, Group 1 students study Engineering Drawing, Electrical, Engineering Mechanics, Physics and Mathematics. The syllabus also includes two sessional subjects- Earth system science and Value education, human rights, and legislative procedure.
On the other hand, Group 2 students study Electronics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Manufacturing processes, and English for Science and Technology. The sessional subjects for group 2 are- Disaster Management and Computer Programming.
During sem 2, the subjects are swapped between the two groups. This means that for sem 2, group 1 students study Electronics, Chemistry.... and group 2 students study Engineering Drawing, Electrical…..
This is the Semester 1 syllabus for UG Engineering students at IIT Dhanbad.
IIT Dhanbad is a renowned engineering college with top facilities. All its departments are at par with the other IITs. It produces one of the highest number of publications, and has one of the best faculties among the IITs.
The Mechanical Department has experienced faculty and top infrastructure. It witnesses 80%+ placements consistently. You’ll get ample growth opportunities as a student of Mechanical at this college.
Companies like IOCL, BPCL, MECL, OIL, ONGC, CIL, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Adani Power, Tata Power, Reliance, L&T, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, CAT, PwC, Goldman Sachs, Futures First, etc. visit the department each year for recruitment purpose.
So I would recommend you pursue your Mechanical degree from IIT Dhanbad.
IIT Bhubaneswar is a new IIT and was established in the year 2008. On the other hand, IIT Dhanbad is an old IIT. Being an old IIT, the academic curriculum and academic flexibility are more functional at IIT Dhanbad than any other new IIT.
Many of my friends have passed out from IIT Dhanbad who were highly satisfied with their placement considering their JEE advance ranks. In the placement drive 2020, the highest package offered to the mechanical branch at IIT Dhanbad was INR 17 lakhs per annum.
Changing your branch is comparatively easier at IIT Dhanbad. So, even if you are compromising on your branch of choice, you can get it altered to your choice once you join in.
To conclude, I would suggest you go for IIT Dhanbad.
The two deciding factors in this case are the studies and placements. IIT Dhanbad offers M.Tech ECE in VLSI, RF and Microwave Engineering, Communications, and Photonics. RF and Microwave Engineering is a good but difficult option.
The faculty for VLSI and Communications is good. However, the Photonics faculty is not good at all. 2-3 subjects and labs are common for all ECE students. However, the curriculum for RF and Microwave is entirely different from the other three.
The placement scenario for ECE isn’t good. Very few students are placed from the department, that too in non-core jobs. Those who are well-versed in programming get easily placed in IT firms.
Core companies like Texas, Intel, Amdocs, etc. visit the campus for recruitment. However, they recruit very few students (sometimes none) from the department. Some students do secure internships at firms like Intel. But for final placements, they have to undergo screening once again. The placements are nil in RF. But some universities visit the campus seeking Assistant Professors. They offer good starting packages.
If you get VLSI at NIT Surathkal/Trichy/Warangal, choose that over IIT Dhanbad. The placement for VLSI is very good at these colleges. As for IIT Dhanbad, it offers a very decent M.Tech ECE. The main advantage in this case is the ‘IIT’ tag.
