What is IIT Delhi best at among all the IITs?

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 10th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi is indeed a well esteemed Engineering college in India. The best part about IIT Delhi is that it provides holistic development of the students rather than just focusing on academics. You get to explore and experience everything you can imagine in your life. You are able to multitask by the time you leave college.

The students here are not just academic geniuses but each one of them has a unique trait. Most students are all-rounders excelling in sports, academics as well as cultural activities.

An added bonus is the close proximity to DU colleges which form a network of colleges and students clustered together. The IIT Delhi students actively participate among students belonging to diverse streams of knowledge.

IIT Delhi's location is also a major reason why it is considered the best. While all other IITs are far from the city, IIT Delhi is located in the center of the city more importantly in South Delhi. This locational advantage brings tremendous opportunities in terms of placements and amenities.

The overall culture inside and outside the campus makes IIT Delhi a unique IIT in every sense.

What should I be prepared for before joining IIT Delhi?

SG

Nothing can prepare you enough for the intense life you will be experiencing at IIT Delhi. Yet, here are a few pointers that might help

  • You will see a drastic decline in your rank. Students who were once school toppers will reach the bottom of the class. This is usually because students are chilled after JEE or face massive competition.
  • The first-year Physics lecture and lab activities are the most challenging things you will face.
  • Never copy your assignments as your professors are way smarter than you think
  • Listen to the advice of seniors but pay heed to only the ones that your brain justifies.
  • Make sure to use your freedom well and don’t let it become a reason for your downfall
  • You might face partiality to a little extent but you must bear with it.

What is the worst course you've taken or have heard of at IIT Delhi?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 1st, 2023

In my opinion, the two worst courses one should refrain from ever taking in IIT Delhi are MCP 100 and MCP 101.

MCP 100: This course is Engineering Drawing and is one of the most irrelevant courses offered at IIT Delhi. It is taught by prof Sujeet Kumar Sinha who has no teaching skills and is always in a rush to complete the course. The entire syllabus is completed in just 2 months leaving no space to comprehend what was taught.

MCP 101: This course comprises concepts such as casting and welding which are not expected to be studied by an IITian at least.

Both the courses are a complete waste of time and don’t do justice to the institute's reputation.

Should I take IIT Delhi chemical or take a drop?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

I am not saying that taking a dropout is a bad decision. Most people who appear for JEE more than once tend to score better after the first time. It is not an issue and don’t let people convince you otherwise.

However, you should have a very just reason for taking a drop. Just because you couldn’t get into your dream branch does not mean, you cannot do well in other branches. In that case, you can consider the CS branch of other 2nd-tier Engineering colleges rather than taking a drop year. Moreover, you will be answerable for the same in your interview, and might work against your favor in your interview.

On research, you will find that the median salary of IIT Guwahati and other engineering colleges is almost on par with that of IIT Kanpur and Madras. There is a difference, but not big enough to make you take a year drop out. Ultimately, only you can make the decision but I have laid down the cards, make a wise decision.

What is it like to be a professor at IIT Delhi?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 1st, 2023
lives in New Delhi

My friends' father is a newly recruited assistant professor at IIT Delhi and shared his experience of the same over tea.

Facilities

  • No extravagant salary is offered but that’s not what professors are usually after
  • A new apartment has been built to accommodate faculty
  • Every professor gets his own private space in the form of a small office

Coursework

  • Professors also have a lot of burden and each professor is expected to take one B.Tech and one M.Tech level course in 1 semester. There are around 42 lectures in a semester.
  • The professors are free to determine the pedagogy as the exam papers are set and checked by them only. Even the mode of evaluation can be altered according to their will.
  • Some professors don’t even take exams and evaluate students' performance based on class participation and term papers.

Research

  • Being a prestigious engineering institute, IIT Delhi is responsible for heaps of research work for the Government e.g Delhi Metro, BRT, Ganga Action Plan, etc.
  • The professors-industry interaction is very low
  • You get plenty of time to pursue your research work

Career prospects

Professors are of different levels: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor.

The promotion depends on the quality of your research work. Overall, the experience is a mix of research and taking classes simultaneously with a lot of free time in your hand.

Can anyone help me with the IIT Delhi executive MBA entrance exam? What and from where should I study?

AS
Ashmita Sinha Posted On : April 1st, 2023
Masters from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

All the entrance exams for IIT Delhi executive MBA are just a formality and the program itself is just a source of money for the Institute. The total fees stand at 9 lakhs which is too much for a part-time course. You will have to spare time from your hectic work schedule to pursue this course which in itself is a challenge.

Executive MBA from IIT Delhi admission process comprises 2 stages

  • The first phase wherein, General aptitude, English, and Business related questions are asked to prepare for which, you can go through Business news and newspapers
  • The second phase comprises the GDPI round, wherein a group discussion is followed by an interview conducted by a few panelists. In this, you are asked about your past experiences, and achievements and assess your confidence level and communication skills. To prepare for this, prepare well for questions related to your current job.

The process is not that difficult and can be cleared by most professionals.

Do a PG student get a hostel room in IIT Delhi campus?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi has stopped providing on-campus hostel facilities to PG MTech students specially bound mainly due to the shortage of Hostel rooms inside the campus. Earlier they used to provide off-campus hostels that were in pathetic conditions. But starting from 2020, they have even stopped providing these off-campus hostels and students are expected to arrange for their accommodation.

The students have to go to the hostel inside the campus for mess food and have to roam around without any permanent on-campus residence. Moreover, so much distance between their off campus residence and the college wastes a lot of time and they can hardly spare time for doing additional things like studying for an entrance exam.

New hostels are being built to accommodate MTech students and hopefully, in the coming future you might see better hostel facilities for PG students.
