What should I choose between IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati Maths and Computing?

Both IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati MnC are excellent options and the choice of the branch is a personal matter depending on the candidate's preferences rather than the credibility of the branch. Here are a few parameters on which we can draw a general comparison between the two courses.

  • Course structure: IIT Guwahati’s MnC program has a well-structured curriculum with the perfect blend of Computer Science, finance, and Mathematics courses. By the end of the program, you will be eligible to sit for software as well as finance placements. IIT BHU CSE too is known for its flexible course structure with a plethora of electives to choose from.
  • Coding culture: Undoubtedly, IITBHU has a better coding culture than IIT Guwahati. The ambiance is quite competitive at BHU if that’s what you are after. However, MnC too is gaining popularity and the decreasing opening rank can be seen as a proof of the same.
  • Peer group: High JEE rankers prefer IIT Guwahati over IIT BHU and thus the peer group of IIT Guwahati is more refined and superior in quality.
  • Campus and student life: IIT Guwahati has an amazing campus and its students get to live a very dynamic and lively college life. IIT-BHU’s campus on the other hand is underdeveloped and you can also find student politics here. IIT Guwahati is the best choice for nature lovers who like solace and peace while IIT BHU is for those who want to experience city life as well.
  • Student life: Both institutes have great clubs and activities to promote the holistic development of students. Students are allotted single rooms right from the first year at IIT Guwahati which is different from IIT BHU. Mess food is better at BHU. IIT Guwahati is a clear winner in sports, cultural and technical clubs, etc.
  • Placements: Both institutes have equally good placement scenarios with major recruiters like Microsoft, Google, Tower Research, Flipkart, etc. visiting both these campuses. CS and MnC students receive similar placement offers and in fact, being in MnC makes you eligible for both finance as well as software jobs.

Both the institutes and branches have their own strengths and weaknesses and the final decision should be based on what you want from your degree. If it’s a competitive environment you are after, go for IIT BHU, while if it’s a rich college life experience you want, then IIT Guwahati is your destination.

Do PhD candidates in IIT Guwahati get placements?

PP
Pranay Pednekar Posted On : April 28th, 2023

One of my relatives has done his PhD from IIT Guwahati and he shared his experience of the same. PhD and placements don’t go hand in hand as the goal of most PhD students is to research work and not get employed. IITs and IISc especially have very few job opportunities for Ph.D. students. Very few students around 3-4 from every department complete their Ph.D. every year.

My uncle told me he had 3 offers before submission. In IIT, it usually takes 4–6 months to get thesis review after submission, and an additional month for final defense. A few students get PostDoc and even job offers from foreign universities and companies.

All in all, it takes 5-7 years to get a Ph.D. degree but mostly the placements are satisfactory. My uncle too has become an assistant professor at IIT Guwahati.

What is the difference between the B-Des programme at IIT-Bombay and the B-Des programme at IIT-Guwahati?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

B.Des (Bachelor of Design) programs at IIT Bombay and IIT Guwahati are both undergraduate programs that focus on design education. However, there may be some differences in terms of the specific curriculum, perspectives, experience, and course offerings at each institution.

  • Experience: IIT Guwahati B.Des is known for its excellent experience in handling undergraduate students. The course is older than 2 decades and has been through constant revisions to make it industry relevant. IDC, IIT Bombay is also one of the best design schools in India for technical design, M.Des that provides great exposure to its students.
  • Perspective: While IIT Guwahati strongly focuses on science as an important part of design, IIT Bombay does not. It solely focuses on design with little importance to technical stuff.
  • Faculty: The faculty pool of both institutes comprises extremely learned and experienced professors that are genuinely passionate about design and teach in such a way that students also fall in love with the course.

Ultimately, how much you gain from this course depends on you only as it all is about learning, observing, and experimenting. No one can help you in design, you have to explore everything on your own.

Which is better: IIT Guwahati mathematics and computing or ECE?

PP
Pranay Pednekar Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Studied at IIT Guwahati

I am assuming you have no specific interests and are looking for a branch that offers good job opportunities. In that case, Maths and Computing at IIT Guwahati is best. With the unique blend of Mathematical concepts and CS concepts, this program has become one of the most coveted ones only second to CSE. Indeed, MnC has an immense workload and is considered difficult but so is ECE. However, if you are not interested in Maths at all, and are a research enthusiast, Electronics is better than MnC. Electronics will give you an opportunity to explore both IT and hardware industries. However, it’s very difficult to secure internships in CE than MnC and this might demotivate you a bit.

Concludingly I would like to comment that MnC is a good option in the short run while ECE will prove to be beneficial in the long run.

PS
Pratik Sharma Posted On : March 20th, 2023
B tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

IIT Guwahati is one of the top engineering institutions in India and has a well-established ECE program with a strong focus on research. The institution has state-of-the-art facilities and offers many opportunities for collaboration and networking with other leading institutions in India and around the world.

Both NIT Surathkal and IIT Guwahati are excellent choices for pursuing an MTech program in ECE. You should consider your personal preferences, career goals, and research interests when making a decision between the two. It's also recommended to visit the campuses, speak to current students and alumni, and explore the curriculum and research opportunities to make an informed decision.

However, when considering the choice between IIT Guwahati and NIT Surathkal for MTech programs in ECE, it is important to note that while both institutions offer excellent programs, the brand and reputation of IITs are highly valued by companies. Therefore, the tag of IIT may carry more weight in the eyes of potential employers.

IIT Guwahati is the best choice for those interested in either mathematics or a corporate job. IIT Guwahati gives you a chance to major in mathematics and computing. The combined curriculum makes the MSc students of IIT Guwahati more employable than students of other IITs.

For those who are true Math lovers, IIT Guwahati is the perfect choice for them. The teachers help you pursue mathematics seriously and guide you toward higher studies. They deliver the true essence of the concepts and not every student just mug up the concepts.

It’s best to figure out what you want quickly and make the right decision without any further delay.

Why are the placements at IIT Guwahati so poor as compared to other IITs?

SD
Shubhangi Dutt Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2022)

The placement scenario of only a few IITs is considered good. Some of these include IIT Delhi, Kanpur, Bombay, Kgp, and Madras.

Although these IITs witness intense competition in placements, the fact that some tech giants only visit these IITs makes their placement scenario better than other IITs. A few of the top companies include Google, Apple, Uber, Facebook, etc. Many consulting giants such as Mckinsey, BCG, Bain, AT Kearney, etc. offer roles in finance, software, banking, investment banking, etc. These roles are offered in plenty around 30-60 at these IITs. Other companies do visit other IITs and the salary offered is also similar.

Dhansiri: This hostel is quite similar to Subansiri although it was inaugurated in 2014. The only difference is that Dhansiri is far away from the academic building while Subansiri is closer to the academic building.

Is it worth taking an M.Tech in robotics and AI from IIT Guwahati?

AM
Anirudh Mukharjee Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG)
My sister opted for Robotics and AI from IIT Guwahati although she was in the CS department during her Bachelor's. She gave me plenty of reasons as to why one should prefer this over other institutes and specializations. She was impressed by the course content. First Semester There are 2 core subjects – Fundamental of Robotics, and Artificial Intelligence, and 2 electives- Computer Science Math, and Deep Learning. Basically, the first semester has the maximum number of Computer Science courses. There are 2 labs; Robotics lab and Python lab that mainly have coding. You can also choose NLP or Speech Processing for which you will get one course project each that can be used to operate your CV. Semester 2 There are 2 core subjects namely Robot Vision and Machine Learning and 3 electives. You will get 4 course projects for placement CV from here. You can also choose Introduction to Data Science, Soft Computing, Numerical Analysis, and Optimization Methods. Students that do not come from CS backgrounds may find it difficult to cope with the strictly CS-inclined courses of this program. MTP(Final Year project) My sister's MTP was related to Computer Vision/Image Processing/ CNN deep neural network, titled: ”Underwater Object Detection and Recolonization”. Irrespective of your background, you will have to work on these topics. Internships The Centre allows internships for 2-4 months whereas the CSE department of IIT Guwahati does not allow for internships. Companies coming for CSE and DS also allow the students of Robotics to sit for data science profiles in training. Many even receive PPOs. Placements For placement, all companies coming for CSE and DS allow Robotics students to sit for SDE and DS roles. There isn’t any language barrier and you can choose any from Python, java, or C++. Despite worsening market conditions throughout the world, the Robotics and AI branch of IIT Guwahati managed to get 100% placements, with the average CTC standing at CTC 21 LPA and median at CTC 19 LPA. 2 International packages were also offered. The top recruiters included Rakuten Japan HSBC SLB(Schlumberger) HCL IBM Accenture These companies offer job profiles like SDE, Data Science, AI/ML, etc
