A few years back, one of my friends took admission at KJ Somaiya via the ILS quota in the department of Mechanical Engineering. There were around 12 seats available. The fee was the same for everyone, irrespective of the quota.
He filled up a form on the college’s website and a merit list came out based on their CET marks. My friend’s merit number was in the 70s. If you want admission, you will have to be physically present on the day of counseling along with the fee. They were called for admission based on their merit number. The number of seats available was displayed on an LCD for all the branches. As people took admission, it got updated. When your number is called, you will have to go to the table and select your branch.
This was the process followed a few years back. However, I do not think that there has been any change in the process.
It is advisable to not compare colleges based on the package because the package that you will get largely depends upon how you perform in the interview.
Colleges try their best to bring the best possible companies in the placement drive but it is you and your overall performance that will determine your placement in a particular company.
These may include -
If you work and develop these sets of skills, you will undoubtedly be placed with the best company visiting your campus and also may get the highest package.
To conclude, instead of looking at the package, look at the department that you are getting and also what interests you. Then decide which college will be best for you.
The first thing you need to understand is that a college's worth does not depend on its placements. It’s much more than that. Even if you don’t land a high package you might learn better skills than at any other college. The same is the case with KJ Somaiya, it offers the following advantages which overlook its average placement statistics
Also, the placement here is quite similar to other engineering colleges in Mumbai.
The college offers a package ranging from 3 LPA to 12 LPA. The placement process starts at the beginning of the 7th semester till the middle of the 8th semester.
Some companies are categorized as dream and non-dream companies by the students themselves. The companies which offer a package of 5 LPA or above are termed as the dream company and the one that offers a package of less than 5 LPA are termed as the non-dream companies. Companies offering a dream package for CSE and IT are aplenty.

Furthermore, if you end up being the lucky one among all the students and get selected in any of the dream companies in the first attempt itself, then you cannot sit for any other company and will have to take up that job. But if you are selected in two non-dream companies, you are no more eligible to sit for the placement process any further. You have to select any one of the two companies you have been selected for.
To get a good, impressive package, you need to maintain a good CGPA which is 6.0-7.5 and above. All the ATKTs must be clear, only then you would be able to see the various opportunities that would come your way.
KJ Somaiya does not follow a relative grading system.
Before answering your question let's discuss how to calculate the grade of a particular subject. Every subject has its own credits which are preassigned (1,2,3 etc.). For example
So we can say that securing a 9+ pointer is fairly easy in the First Year at KJ Somaiya. All you need is an average of around 80-85% in semesters and you'll be above the 9-pointer mark.
It is hard to compare particularly the finance stream but overall comparison is given below in the table;

I have friends from both Vidyalankar Institute of Technology and KJ Somaiya. Based on the conversations I had with them, I will suggest you choose KJ Somaiya for a CS degree.
Here are some of the reasons why you should prefer KJ CE/IT over Vidyalankar CE /IT.
Vidyalankar is not a bad choice either. Both colleges have their own advantages. Here is a brief comparison of the two institutes.

Highest CTC | 18.75 LPA | 7 LPA |

It is not just KJ Somaiya, but every college you decide to go to, find out the following, especially for post-graduate studies:
A friend of mine completed her M. Tech from KJ Somaiya and her experience was average. The research cell is not great and some teachers are well versed in their subject whereas others struggle with basic knowledge.
If you are concerned about placements, those are definitely improving over the years and this college will only be a good option for you if you are not looking for placements.
There isn't much of a difference between IT and CS, forget institutes individually where you would pursue them. Both CS and IT happen to consist of more or less the same subjects and the course pattern is also similar. There are only a handful of subjects that do not match when it comes to the subject courses of CS and IT and trust me, that isn't as important as it seems.
Eventually, it is all about your choice of college. It is assumed that you have done some prior research beforehand on the institutes. A former student of this institute who I know would also suggest not giving too much importance to the branches either.
Also, special mention to KJ Somaiya as along with the benefits of autonomy, you would be able to grab better placement opportunities for yourself at reputed companies with a handsome salary package. The top recruiters of the students of KJ Somaiya are Cognizant, PwC, Amazon, etc. Till now, 90% of students have been placed and the CTC was as high as 29.75 LPA and the average CTC stood at 9.4 LPA. Banking, Financial Services, IT are the sectors which recruited the most students.
