I think doing a BTech in Civil Engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar is a better choice than opting for a BE in CSE at BITS Hyderabad. No doubt BITS Hyderabad is a great academic institution but IIT Bhubaneswar is known for offering exceptional academic standards and research opportunities to the students.
Both IIT Gwalior with CSE and IIT Bhubaneswar with mechanical are great options for you to pursue but the choice majorly depends on your academic choices, career goals and personal preferences.
IIT Bhubaneswar offers a decent M.Tech Electronics and Communication program. Various PSUs, core companies, and software companies visit the campus placements to recruit students through campus placement. According to IIT Bhubaneswar placements, the average CTC received by the M.Tech students is around INR 10.34 LPA. Each year around 88% of students gets placement.
The CSE duel degree course offered at IIT Bhubaneswar is good and have a decent placement record. The institute offers a dual degree course in CSE with a duration of 5 years/10 semesters. The essential eligibility criteria for taking admission in the CSE dual degree program is 60% marks in 10+2 PCM. The final selection is based on the performance of the candidate in the JEE Advanced examination. In 2019 the JEE Advanced cutoff for B.Tech+M.Tech in Computer Science Engineering was 2114-6517.
The School of Electrical Sciences which offers the CSE programs at the institute have good infrastructure with 33 well-equipped laboratories and a dedicated group of highly qualified faculty members.
According to the placement statistics of IIT Bhubaneswar in 2019 the CSE branch ad the highest placement rate. The average CTC offered was around 11.4 LPA.
Despite being one of the new generations of IITs, IIT Bhubaneswar is considered among the top engineering colleges in the country. NIRF has ranked IIT Bhubaneswar 17th among the engineering colleges in India.
Among the various engineering programs offered by the institute Civil, ME, EE, ECE, CSE, and Metallurgical Engineering are the most developed branches in IIT Bhubaneswar judging by the infrastructure and placement statistics of the programs.
According to the placement statistics of 2019-20 at IIT Bhubaneswar, 64% of the civil engineering students got placements. For EE the placement rate was 87%. Around 97% and 100% of the students from ECE and CSE got the placements in many top MNCs. Metallurgical engineering had a 90% placement rate. The highest domestic CTC offered was around INR 43.3 LPA and the average CTC was INR 15.8 LPA. MNCs like Honeywell, TCS, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, Wipro, Capgemini, Amazon, etc. have participated in the placement drive.
At IIT Hyderabad, the department of CSE got an average CTC of 26.6 LPA in 2019 campus placement, while the highest CTC offered was 47 LPA. Companies like Adobe, Amazon, Microsoft, and Airtel hired CSE students. IIT Hyderabad being among the top 10 IITs in India, excels in placements and the students receive good packages in top MNCs.
On the other hand, IIT Bhubaneswar has 100% placements for the CSE department in 2019 campus placement. A total of 89 companies visited the campus namely Capgemini, Dell, Honeywell, Microsoft, Accenture, etc. The students of the CSE department received a handsome package of 10-35 LPA.
Hyderabad is better than other new IITs and the placements and other facilities at IIT Hyderabad is much better than IIT Bhubaneswar, so CSE at IIT Hyderabad would be the better choice.
The placement scenario for a dual degree in civil engineering is different from other branches in IIT Bhubaneswar. Nowadays, students of civil engineering prefer non-core jobs over core jobs. The reason being higher initial pay in non-core jobs and the unavailability of core job in civil engineering. But for civil engineering in an IIT, a lot of students prefer dual degree courses over BTech. The advantage of a dual degree student is that one gets the opportunity to work on a project in 2nd year holidays, and intern in the 3rd year and 4th year. In 3rd year, the BTech student changes from BTech to Dual degree student.
The placements for civil engineering students’ weather in the dual degrees or in B.Tech are not up to the expectations, whether you graduate from IIT-Bhubaneswar or any other IIT. This is the reason why most of the students indulge in coding and switch to non-core companies. Few students go for their own start-up, while some opt for pursuing a Ph.D. and some go for PSUs. Although a handful of big firms such as L&T constructions, Marvel Realtors, etc. come to campus for recruitment. A student must have good practical knowledge and experience. These firms mostly go for experience (unlike other branches). They hire students as trainees and once the students have completed the tenure as trainees while gaining experience simultaneously, their pay increases satisfactorily and exponentially. The average package is about 7-9 lakhs (approximately). The percentage of students from civil engineering getting placed in core companies is less than the students from other core branches (changes year to year). But overall, the placements for Civil Engineering are not as good as other core branches in most of the IITs and it’s the same for IIT Bhubaneswar.
IIT & NIT are different in a number of ways and judging on the placement figures, one should not make any decisions. Although old NITs may offer better placement as compared to the IIT Bhubaneswar, there are few factors that make IIT Bhubaneswar a worthy choice. IITs have a brand value that is globally recognized however NITs as a brand don’t offer the same. They demand higher cut off marks during selection as compared to NITs. This results in a better quality of students and in turn better placements.
IITs offer better engineering faculties, however being a new IIT, it still does not have the required number of faculty members. IIT Bhubaneswar collaborates with esteemed institutions like ISRO, DRDO, BARC, etc. Students of IIT Bhubaneswar receive cushy internship offers from some of the globally renowned organizations like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. NITs research work is not at the same level. With a spacious campus and state-of-the-art research labs, IIT Bhubaneswar provides good infrastructure. Past placement records from NITs indicate that the average pay package offered to the students (B.Tech) is somewhere between Rs 40,000 and 42,000 monthly. Whereas, the average CTC Offered at IIT Bhubaneswar was around 11.44 LPA. 39 LPA was the highest CTC. PSUs like ISRO, DRDO, IOCL, HPCL, ONGC visited the campus for recruitment. Other top recruiters were Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, L&T, Deloitte, Directi, Reliance Industries, IBM, Tesco, Samsung, Apple Inc, Adobe, Tata Steel, Tata Power, Trident Group, UnitedHealth Group, etc. A total of 89 companies visited the campus for placement drive. Although, variance among the salary packages depends on the ability of candidates and academic performances. All institutes have their pros and cons, so choose an institute based on which course you are interested in and how good is that specific course in that institute.
IIT Bhubaneswar ranks 17th in the engineering category by NIRF 2019. It is one of the newer IITs established in 2008.
