How is a PhD in IIT Mandi? Is it good or only a time pass like in most NITs?

AD
Anumita Dixit Posted On : August 25th, 2022
B.Tech in Computer Science, College of Engineering, Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology

A Ph.D. from IIT Mandi is certainly not a time pass. You need to put consistent efforts to keep up with the coursework. IIT Mandi follows a demanding curriculum. Ph.D. students need to maintain a CGPA of 7.5 out of 10. Students need to publish 2 reputed journal papers and various conference papers. They also need to deliver research seminars, It is anything but easy.

IIT Mandi has an excellent faculty base. Most faculty members are alumni of old IITs or universities abroad. So, they expect older IIT-level performance from Ph.D. students.

How is Thapar University for doing a PhD?

JD
Jai Dhingra Posted On : August 7th, 2021
Studied at University of Mumbai (2019)

Thapar University is not good for doing Ph.D. The Computer Science department is full of people who are self-involved.

Except for a few faculty members, others are not good. They will not help you in your research work and due to which you could miss deadlines.

Clearing GATE and then going for some decent college is the better option. Your thesis will be the real mirror of what you do during your entire Ph.D program. Work hard and get into one of the prestigious colleges in the country.

We can say that give your best shot in the GATE exam and get your seat reserved in some decent college, so that you gain some knowledge along with the hands-on industry training.

Which is better, a PhD at Jadavpur University or at IIT Patna?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : June 21st, 2023
Lives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

My friend had options of Ph.D. from JU, IIEST as well as IIT Patna and still chose IIT Patna. She claimed that IIT Patna had a better research culture and the professors get work published in very good journals, A/A* conferences, etc. The professors motivate the students for the same and this aspect attracted him the most. However, your personal preferences also come to play here. So consider the following points

  • If you want to complete your Ph.D. quickly, JU will serve you better.
  • If you are ready to commit yourself to hard work and increase your publications gradually with your knowledge and time
  • IIT Patna students get 2.5lacs per student to go to any conference at a tenure of 5 years.
  • If you want to enjoy college life in addition to research work then JU is better. The college ambiance is great with a dynamic city life.

Choose IIT Patna for its research culture and not the IIT tag.

How is the life of PhD student at IIT Kharagpur?

AA
Aishwarya Anand Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

I guess you are enquiring about the research culture of IIT Kharagpur rather than the life of a Ph.D. student as his/her life is based on research only.

  • A typical Ph.D. student is always invested in some or other research work like INDEST, SCOPUS, and Publications.
  • The research work depends largely on the particular department and the faculty advisor.
  • Each research student is given a research problem on which he works and submits good-quality publications after which his Ph.D. is given.
  • Some students are given the opportunity to explore and choose a research topic on their own. These students are guided by friendly faculty advisors who are not only excellent in their field but also guide you throughout the journey.
  • Usually it takes more than 4 years to obtain a Ph.D. in a Science or Social Science department whereas less than 4 years in an Engineering department.

It is not necessary to be confined within the walls of your department lab as a Ph.D. student. Some choose the relaxed way and enjoy their campus life to the fullest as well.

Why has IIT Delhi made its PhD admissions so hard?

vp
vidya prakhar Posted On : April 10th, 2023
Ph.D from IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi Ph.D eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Passed M.Tech/M.E/M.Sc/MBA degree with minimum 60% marks
  • Or, B.E/B.Tech with a minimum of 70% marks in the concerned discipline.
  • Must qualify for GATE/ CSIR/ UGC NET/ ICAR/ DST INSPIRE fellowship

The admission has been made challenging to shortlist minimal candidates that rightly qualify for the degree instead of shortlisting many. Although we can say that CGPA alone should not be the only criterion, maybe they might already be getting enough applications that can be filtered out using criteria like CGPA.

Now, Stanford’s Ph.D. eligibility criteria is a TOEFL cut-off of 113/120 for MS in CSE. One might think that the TOEFL is an irrelevant criterion for a Ph.D. but it is necessary as you will have to read and write papers in grad school. This criterion showcases the holistic eligibility criteria of US admissions in contrast to Indian admissions.

What is your IIT Kharagpur PhD experience?

AA
Aishwarya Anand Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

A typical Ph.D. student is expected to have been trained in conducting and researching projects when he is ready to get a Ph.D. after conducting enough research under a faculty advisor.

The Ph.D. degree is given by an expert from an extremely reputed industry and he is under no obligation to give the degree unless he considers the researcher's work worthy of a Ph.D. degree. Therefore there is no relaxation and one has to give it all to get a Ph.D. and satisfy the person evaluating his work. For some, this might be easy while for some it may take years.

Ph.D. students have to conduct thorough research on the given topic and go through the publications of experts. They can derive their own opinions from these works or point out some flaws and remedies for the same.

The entire process of obtaining a Ph.D. degree has a number of obstacles and sometimes things look too forlorn and some even give up. But trust me the result is worth the effort and a Ph.D. can become your savior for a lifetime.

What GATE rank is required to get an MS and a PhD in IIT Madras?

RB
Ranjini Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

Unlike MTech, admission to MS or Ph.D. is based more on their interview and aptitude test than on GATE score.

  • For some of the master's programs, like MS candidates are shortlisted after a round of technical interviews. IIT Madras prefer students with GATE scores of at least 90 percentile or more.
  • For Ph.D. too, candidates will be considered if they score between 1000-2000. Here, a rank less than 800 is considered excellent and such candidates will be considered for Ph.D. courses through GATE scores.

Thus we can say that the cut-off required for joining MS and Ph.D. programs at IIT Madras, for example, is lesser compared with the cut-off required for admission into the MTech program

What should be written in research proposal IIT Madras Direct PhD?

RB
Ranjini Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

This answer is based on the assumption that you already have an experience of research in your previous degree in a particular area of interest and you are willing to expand it through Ph.D. The research proposal should be based on this area of expertise only and the prescribed word limit should be followed. A research proposal for a Direct Ph.D. program at IIT Madras should include:

  • A clear and concise statement of the research problem or question
  • A review of the relevant literature and current state of knowledge on the topic
  • A description of the research methods and techniques that will be used to investigate the problem
  • A detailed plan for data collection and analysis
  • A discussion of the expected outcomes and contributions of the research to the field.

Let me explain this with the help of an example. You have a previous Master's degree in Biotechnology with work experience in cell culture. But you want to expand your research in cancer. Write a detailed idea of what, how, and why you are willing to conduct research in this field.

Your proposal will give a better picture of your research expertise and your level of knowledge to the panels and they will evaluate you based on your previous degree score, GATE score, written exam score, and viva performance apart from the proposal.

The research proposal primarily helps you in short-listing the professors under which you will work based on their area of research. You don’t need to be working on the topic you wanted and might have to work on the professor's research work.

Your proposal should portray your area of research work that is possible to be completed in 2-3 years.
