There is no such specific syllabus for Finance and Marketing at IIM Ahmedabad. In the first year, IIM Ahmedabad courses for MBA are designed by the institute.
In the second year of your PGP, you will have the freedom to choose the area and discipline that you want to study. There are many interesting electives on offer from both Finance and Marketing. There are courses on Trading, Insurance, Advanced Statistics, Artificial Intelligence and Marketing, Brand Management, Marketing Services, etc.
During your time on the IIM Ahmedabad campus, you will make many memorable moments. Some of my friends are from IIM Ahmedabad. For them, the best moment was listening to the inspiring convocation speech by the then president Dr. Abdul Kalam. While some claim receiving the degree certificate was something quite special.
One of my friends recently graduated from IIM Ahmedabad and as per his experience it is a snapshot of the real world.
You will learn to survive amongst people smarter than you. Most importantly, you will learn to challenge your limits with 3-4 hours of sleep. You will strive to look for more time in a day apart from 24 hours.
You will find faculty members saying that they are preparing you for the real world. It is so to help you analyse the market out in the world. However, out in the world, you cannot excel in everything. It is important to accept this fact and not feel bad about what you cannot achieve.
You must hold on to your strengths and find a path for yourself that makes you happy. The time spent in the institute will truly transform you. You will not only see the world with a different perspective but will find new capabilities of yourself.
It is tough to list cases over different subjects as there is a huge number of cases available. It is very doubtful that the same cases will remain popular always. It completely depends upon the faculty who decides to choose the cases for explaining a concept.
Case-studies:
One of my friends' field was Information Technology. Some of the cases, he studies during his diploma are as follows.
The cases developed by IIMA are still the Harvard cases which are more popular at IIMA. There are several cases available from Stanford, Columbia, and some Asian business schools as well.
Since you are an Agricultural Engineering student, doing PGP-FABM from IIM Ahmedabad will be a better option if you want a career in Agriculture. FABM students get recruited in Agri Inputs and Services, Agri Commodity Trading, Food, & Agri Consulting, and Agritech. Also, some recruiting companies offer common job profiles to PGP and FABM students.
If you aren’t specifically interested in Agriculture, and want to pursue a career in HR, XLRI HRM is an excellent option. It is the best Human Resources program in the Asia-Pac region. The placement opportunities are great.
Before choosing any of these options, check the career outcome of both the courses and see which interests you more.
Marketing, Finance & Accounting both fields have their advantages. So, it is difficult to say which specialization will be more prospective.
As you start your career as an entry-level banker, you start with financial management. As you grow up the ladder and will be promoted and become a marketing professional trying to sell your services to big clients/firms.
Now as a marketing professional, you start with amazing marketing skills and as you grow up the ladder you sit in a room and work to get new ideas, allocate budget, target, ROI, and manage finances.
Both Marketing and Finance offer ample opportunities to the students. Both have great career prospects.
Pros of Marketing:
Pros of Finance:
Also, there is no need to mention the cons separately as they will be the plain opposites. In easy words, are you more inclined towards attracting people towards your product to buy it or you want to manage the money of a company? So, it all boils down to your preferences and goals which you want to go for.
Few of my friends attended IIM Ahmedabad. One of them scored 3.56 in his first year. Here are some of the common traits that you will observe in most people who score good CGPA.
Doing these will help you score better.
Looking broadly, there are five major parameters that distinguish IIM A as the best.
Quality of Intake: As the most sought-after B School, it attracts the most talented and passionate students. Good input results in good output. Peer learning is also more effective.
Incredible Faculty Members: It has had the best set of on-campus and visiting professors. Even guest speakers are the best in the business.
Infrastructure and Facilities: Because it has always been at the top, it has always had funds to invest in the best infrastructure. The fees are high, but there are government grants available.
Alumni Network: The best jobs are given to students. They will now want to return to their campus and recruit students. This aids in placements. Furthermore, these individuals guide junior batches, which means you are being guided by the best.
Finally, IIM A is a brand that has proven its worth. People are aware of it. These perceptions are difficult to overcome, so only a small number of people prefer Bangalore or Calcutta over Ahmedabad. A has an unrivaled sense of pride.
The answer to your question depends on the reason why you are willing to pursue an MBA and if the reason is strong enough to go for an MBA at the age of 29 years. See, age should never be a restricting factor especially when it comes to education. But your purpose should be well-defined and crystal clear. Pursuing MBA vaguely just to venture on new opportunities or career options might do you more harm than good. So the primary step in deciding if an MBA at 29 is good or not is to analyze your purpose. If you are changing streams for instance moving to Finance or MC, you need to know that your pay scale might see a new low.
I have another suggestion for you. Why don’t you compare the two programs;
Compare the curriculum and prospects of these two programs. The reason why I suggested to you research the Executive program is that many experienced professionals (almost 95%) prefer the Executive program over the regular program. It suits their needs better.
The 2-year program is suitable only if you are looking for an internship and I Don't think that is the case for you. Moreover, if you consider the major aspects like classroom experience, rigor and placements, the Executive program is far more a viable option in your case. It will also allow you to reap the maximum benefits in less time. So do your part of the research and make an informed decision.
For the FPM program, IIM Ahmedabad selects students based on their performance in CAT. Students with good scores in a standard test in lieu of CAT can also apply for the program. Different specializations of IIM A FRM has different standard tests that aspirants need to take. For most programs, IIMA accepts GRE, GATE, GMAT, UGC JRF scores.
