What is the procedure at IIT Bhubaneswar?

AG
Asish Gupta Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Sc Physics & Mathematics, Banaras Hindu University (2019)

The institute offers diverse courses at all levels, i.e., Undergraduate, Post-Graduate, Ph.D., and Fellowship programs. The admission procedure at IIT Bhubaneswar is similar to that of any other IIT.

For undergraduate admissions, all of the IITs hold a two-tier entrance examination called the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The first tier of the entrance test is known as JEE Mains and the second one is JEE Advanced. Once you go through JEE Mains, you are allowed to sit for JEE Advanced. If you clear JEE Advanced you will have the chance to get admission to the desired IIT.

In order to be eligible for admission at any IIT, candidates must clear both the exams and must have secured a good rank. If you secure the cutoff asked by the institute you can choose the institutes and courses, in the order of your preference during Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counseling. After document verification, the authority allocates you to the institute as per your ranking and preference.

For getting admission in postgraduate courses you need to clear GATE and the departmental interviews.

Is it good for girls to take up mechanical engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar?

US
Urmila Singh Posted On : August 13th, 2020
Studied Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (2021)

There has always been a stereotype that Mechanical Engineering is better suited for male than female students. Girls are pushed to take other courses like Electronics or Computer Science because they are said not to possess the physical strength required for the fieldwork in Mechanical Engineering. Even in top engineering colleges, it is seen that the male to female gender ratio is 140:10 which is fairly low as compared to other branches.

The choice of a branch to pursue should entirely depend on the individual. If a female candidate is interested to pursue Mechanical Engineering, she should be able to make that decision without apprehension. We are in the 21st century and it is high time we free ourselves of stereotypes which cause hindrance in maintaining gender equality through society.

Mechanical Engineering doesn’t always need the aspirant to work on the field as it opens up opportunities for other fields too like Machine Design and CAD, Robotics and Mechatronics, Structural Analysis, etc. However, an individual, be it any gender, should be able to choose their career freely even if they are interested in pursuing a career in fieldwork after studying Mechanical Engineering.

IIT Bhubaneswar provides a strong faculty base and learning environment for students to pursue M.Tech. A few of the subject matters include Theory of Machines, Design of Machine elements, Power Plant Engineering, Artificial Intelligence & Neuro-Fuzzy Theory, etc. In the year 2018-19, 83% of students got placed from the Mechanical branch and the average salary offered was INR 11.44 LPA. Top recruiters included companies like TATA Steel, Maruti Suzuki, and PSUs like DRDO, ISRO, IOCL etc.

PS
Priyadarshini Sen Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (2019)

Yes, you can take the CAT (Common Admission Test) after completing your dual degree from IIT Bhubaneswar. There are no specific eligibility criteria related to the type of degree or institution for CAT.

However, to be eligible to appear for the CAT exam, you must have completed your graduation with at least 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA (45% for SC/ST/PWD candidates) from a recognized university or educational institution. Since you have completed a dual degree from IIT Bhubaneswar, you should check with the CAT conducting body or the B-schools you are interested in applying to, regarding their specific eligibility criteria.

It's worth noting that the CAT exam is a prerequisite for admission to various management programs offered by top B-schools in India, including the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The exam assesses a candidate's aptitude in various areas, including quantitative ability, verbal ability, data interpretation, and logical reasoning. If you meet the eligibility criteria and feel confident about your aptitude in these areas, you can certainly apply for the CAT exam.

How can I change my course from a dual degree to a B-Tech degree in IIT-Bhubaneswar?

Neerendra Singh Posted On : August 13th, 2020

Most IITs do not allow changing courses from dual degree to a B.Tech degree. However, you can shift from a B.Tech degree to a dual degree. The rules regarding the change of course in IIT Bhubaneswar are the same as other IITs.

In IIT Bhubaneswar, only those students will be eligible to be considered for branch change after the second(spring) semester, who have-

  1. Completed all the credits required in the first two semesters of their studies.
  2. CGPA not lower than 8.5 at the end of the second semester.

Students in the 4th year of B.Tech courses are also eligible to apply for a change of branch in any engineering (4-Year or 5-Year dual degree) course. But the selection is strictly based on merit of the applicants. Generally, applicants who rank in the top 1% are considered first. In case of ties, the deciding factor is the JEE rank of the applicants. Students who are interested in changing their courses may enlist up to 5 choices of branch according to their preference.

How good is the CSE branch and faculty at the IIT in Bhubaneswar ?

AR
Anushua Roy Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech CE from IITBBSR (2019)

IIT Bhubaneshwar is at the 22nd rank in the NIRF 2020 ranking. However, there are many other IITs like IIT Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur, and Kanpur among others, which are ranked higher than IIT Bhubaneshwar.

Looking at the parameter of placement in the CSE branch, it is quite impressive with a placement rate of 100%. Some reputed companies were present in the placement drives conducted in the college. In 2018, Adobe visited the college and offered the highest package, which was worth INR 38 lakh per annum. Similarly, Goldman Sachs had offered a package of 31.5 lakh to three students from the CSE branch.

The infrastructure required for the CSE branch is also quite well at IIT Bhubaneshwar. The college provides essential facilities like Wi-Fi network, computer laboratories, smart classes, library, and gymnasium.

The faculty is well-qualified and most of them are IIT alumnae and have Ph.D. The student to faculty ratio is 1 teacher to 40 students, which is not very impressive. However, the faculty provides students with elaborated notes and PowerPoint presentations to teach them in recreational ways.

Considering the academics and placement rate it’s clear that CSE at IIT Bhubaneswar is quite good.

How can we compare CSE in top NITs like Suratkal/Warangal with that of CSE in new IITs like Bhubaneswar ?

VA
Varun Agarwal Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.E Electronics And Instrumentation, National Institute of Technology, Agartala (2021)

Old NITs like Surathkal or Warangal have an established stature in terms of placements, courses, faculty, infrastructure, etc. They offer a strong faculty base and learning environment to its students. For example, NIT Surathkal has consistently maintained a placement percentage of 90%+ for the BTech CSE branch. Some top companies that visit the campus for final placements are Adobe, Microsoft, Oracle, etc.

New IITs have also set a promising position for Btech CSE. IIT Indore hosts a variety of projects and events related to competitive programming/coding. Placement records are also good at these IITs. For example, IIT Bhubaneswar records 100% placements of students from the CSE branch with an average package of 11.44 Lakhs INR per annum. Some companies that visit the campus for final placements include Reliance Jio, Amazon, Deloitte, Oracle etc.

You should weigh the pros and cons and join the institute with the better CSE program and not join a college only for the brand value.
