If the IIT tag is not considered, NIT Trichy’s Structural Engineering M.Tech course is better than IIT Bhubaneswar. But the hallmark of IIT does offer certain advantages.

NIT Trichy was established in 1964 while IIT Bhubaneswar was established in 2008. So, it is the older institution with a strong alumni base. NIRF in 2019 ranked NIT Trichy 10 in India while IIT Bhubaneswar was ranked at 17.

NIT Trichy has a very good placement record over the years and it is pretty good for structural engineering specialization. Almost 80% of the M. Tech students are employed in reputed companies every year with an average salary package of 5 lakh per annum. Some of the companies in which the students get placed are L&T Construction, L&T Hydrocarbon, TCE, L&W Construction, Atkins, Dow Chemicals, Technip, etc.

Compared to NIT Trichy, IIT Bhubhaneshwar does not have an impressive M. Tech placement record. The institute has witnessed around 68% of placement. But in the year 2018, there was an increase in the number of jobs offered from core industries. The average salary package was 11.15 package per annum. Top MNC recruiters were Goldman Sachs, Renault, Nissan, Samsung, Oracle, Infosys, Adobe, etc. The public sector undertakings in India such as ISRO, IOCL, HPCL, NCCBM also participated in placement.

The total fee structure of IIT Bhubaneswar for the M.Tech Structural Engineering program is Rs. 2.31 Lakhs/ Year. While the fee structure in NIT Trichy is only Rs. 96,625/ Year. NIT Trichy has highly qualified and experienced faculty. Most of them hold Ph. D and some of them have completed PostDoc. The institute makes use of the e-learning platform to teach the students. IIT Bhubaneswar is also rich with experienced faculties.

According to NIRF Engineering ranking 2020, NIT Trichy stands at 12th position, on the other hand, MNNIT secures an impressive 48th rank. Both the colleges boast to have placed 90% of its students in the recruitment process.

Admission:

• Students get admission into NITs based on their JEE(for undergraduates) main rank. A good score would help them to secure a place.

• Candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with 75% marks.

• For MTech, students need to apply for GATE, followed by CCMT counseling.

Fees:

NITs have an affordable fee structure for their students. Colleges also give scholarships to their students. Day boarders pay a little less than those who avail the hostel and mess facility.

Faculty:

• NIT Trichy has experienced facilities that graduated from IITs and NITs, which include 358 professors out of which 267 are Ph.D. holders.

• MNNIT Allahabad has a good number of faculties that include highly qualified Ph.D. holders from relevant fields.

Placements:

NIT Trichy:

• In the recent placements, a total of 220 companies visited NIT Trichy.

• 100% placement was recorded in the Computer Science branch.

• The highest package offered was INR 40 lakhs. Prominent recruiters include Infosys, TCS, and Facebook.

MNNIT Allahabad:

• In the recent placement drive, a total of 792 students were placed. 97.60% of students were placed from the Computer science branch.

• The highest package offered to the CSE students was INR 36 LPA and the average package was INR 15 LPA.

These colleges do give exposure to research and development. It solely depends on the candidate to choose the college according to their preference.

NIT Trichy or National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli is an old NIT and ranks among the top engineering colleges in India. The placement record in NIT Trichy is quite good. The best placement record of NIT Trichy always comes in postgraduate programs. NIT Trichy and IIT Bhubaneswar are good colleges both in terms of academics and placement, so it’s difficult to pick an institute over the other.

IIEST Shibpur might have the edge over NIT Trichy in terms of research. However, the same cannot be said with certainty in terms of academics. In case of academics, NIT Trichy may be ahead of IIEST Shibpur.

Choosing NIT Trichy allows students to get access and exposure to core companies. ICT Mumbai not only offers good placements but is also great for those students who are looking to apply to universities abroad for further studies.

NIT Trichy offers a great learning experience, especially in CS. EE at IIT Dhanbad and IIT Bhubaneshwar is also decent and the placements are quite good and with either of the IITs, you would get that IIT tag. So, it actually boils down to your choice between an IIT and NIT and if you want to give preference to IITs. 

The average package for EE at NIT Trichy was around 6 LPA with a 97% placement rate for EE students. On the other hand, for IIT Dhanbad, the placement percentage was 76% with the average package of around 15.5 LPA. In IIT Bhubaneshwar, the average package for 2019 was around 11 LPA and the placement rate was around 86% from EE.

Although, the tag isn’t only something one should go after. NIT Trichy’s EE is excellent and the placements are equally great. Good infrastructure, excellent teachers, and a decent learning and developing environment are what one should seek, and thereby, NIT Trichy would be an excellent choice since IIT Dhanbad and IIT Bhubaneshwar are newer IITs. NIT Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal are better than most IITs.
