Which is better, NITIE, an IIM, or an IIT?

SD
Sanjana Das Posted On : August 13th, 2021
MBA Operations, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2019)

Top IIMs (BLACKI) can undoubtedly beat any management college in India, but NITIE is the best choice after them. The following are the reasons.

  • NITIE has a strong alumni base compared to the baby IIMs, new IIMs, or IITs.
  • The institute has strong industry relations such that almost all the FMCG companies and brands come for campus placement. The top recruiters are Nestle, HUL, OLA, P&G, Airtel, L&T, Godrej, GE, TCS, Wipro, Colgate, and more.
  • NITIE also has a location advantage as most companies have the head office in Mumbai, and the city is the financial capital of India. It gives it an edge over new IIMs and IITs.
  • The placement in NITIE is at par with any top B-school in India.

Check the placement statistics below:

Particulars PGDIM PGDISEM
Average CTC INR 20.84 LPA INR 16.28 LPA
Highest CTC INR 44 LPA INR 44 LPA

The order of preference should be Old IIMs> NITIE> IIT Bombay> IIT Delhi> New IIMs.

Should I join nitie if interested in marketing?

TA

When it comes to pursuing marketing from NITIE, you should know that the institute is focused around operations. But, you will definitely be able to pursue marketing or similar roles from the college.

  • You can make a decision depending on how your interview and admission calls go.
  • When you decide to go to NITIE, you will not find that many marketing-oriented students.
  • So there are chances that you might miss out on peer learning.
  • But, you can get in touch with groups like Marketing Interest Group (MIG) which are quite active.
  • NITIE also has less recruiters for marketing but you will see companies like ITC visiting the college.
  • There is nothing much to say about the faculty. The professors are good and cooperative.
  • You will also be exposed to events like Mandi which are held by MIG where you will be selling toys on the streets for an entire day.
  • You will get to experience new concepts and learn a lot.

Don’t keep NITIE as your top priority for marketing. Keep it as a backup and if you do end up at NITIE, you can keep all your electives marketing oriented.

I have heard that there's no sectional cutoff for the NITIE which was announced. I have 97 percentile but my VA is lower than 80. Should I expect a call from NITIE?

Usually, the college does not reveal the sectional cutoff on an official basis. On average, the cutoff are decided depending on the applicant pool and this could also decrease after a while by a few percentiles. This is true for a few sections but expects it not to go below 80.

With your current scores and past trends, if you are from the general category then you will not get a call back from the institute.

If you are lucky with respect to your applicant pool, you might have some small chances, but my advice to you would be to look for other options and not keep high hopes.

How much weightage does NITIE give to 10th and 12th marks?

If it's about the admission process where the score of 10th and 12th is taken into consideration then there's nothing known as a definite calculation, especially for the 10th and 12th marks.

Like most colleges, NITIE follows a decent distribution of the marks. The distribution is as follows:

Particulars Weightage
Entrance Exam 25%
GD / PI 25%
Graduation 20%
12th Exam 20%
10th Exam 10%

This is the following structure for the admission process by most colleges. The only point which can differ is the reservations. Rest everything remains the same.

Should I join Nitie Mumbai or IIT?

FR
Falguni Rahaman Posted On : August 11th, 2021

Everything depends on your interest and priorities. If you aim to build up a career in the OPS or Supply chains, then you should opt for NITIE.

But if you want an IIT tag more, then go for IIT Bombay. But it is important to note that IITs are more focused on B.Tech degrees and not MBAs. There is no doubt that IIT Bombay is a great college but when comparing it to colleges of equal repute, personal preferences matter more. It is important to make an informed decision based on what your priorities are.

It also depends on what domain you are more interested in. If it is Consultancy, then they should opt for IIT Kharagpur. Do check the specialization of the college before making any decision.

Does B.Tech. percentage matter during placement at NITIE for PGDIE, as I'm just having first class (aggregate of 4 years)?

PT
Piya Tanugula Posted On : August 18th, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2019)

One of my close friends was a student of NITIE Mumbai. According to her, the admission process of NITIE has two steps.

  • The first step is to attain a good aggregate in the GATE to get a call.
  • The second step is the GD and Interview round, which helps in the conversion of the call when cleared.

Like most colleges, NITIE follows a decent distribution of the marks. The distribution is - Entrance Exam(in percentage), Group Discussion/Personal Interview, Under-Graduate Exam(in percentage), 12th Exam(in percentage), 10th Exam(in percentage) and Work Experience(If any).

Although these factors are responsible, nobody can tell how particularly these factors affect admission. But in the interview, the student would be asked for the reason for attaining fewer grades in graduation. Therefore, the student should be prepared for that in advance with a logical and sensible answer.

In the placements, the shortlisting procedure is very unpredictable and therefore it's very difficult to say whether or not the grades will affect the shortlisting process. But the fact is that the NITIE has 100% placements and hence a student need not worry about the placements.

Can I survive in the NITIE (PGDIE) as a fresher without any knowledge about industrial engineering?

SR
Swarupa Roy Posted On : August 11th, 2021
PGDIE Operations Research & Supply Chain Management, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2018)

Yes, you can make it through NITIE as a fresher without any knowledge regarding Industrial Engineering. It isn’t rocket science. A huge chunk of the PGDIE batch is freshers.

Here, technical knowledge takes a back seat. To do well in B-Schools, you have to be street-smart. You will be expected to apply common sense to tackle real-world problems.

Now once in a while, you may encounter a few subjects that have certain topics that may appear a little unfamiliar, however, attending classes and skimming through notes/ textbooks once or twice should familiarize you with the underlying concepts. The course is designed that way. You can also consult your professors and your peers to clear any doubts that you have.

You will definitely leave NITIE with some technical knowledge. From the first day, you will learn IE.
