IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee are members of the elite group of IITs, also known as the old IITs. Both of these institutions are Tier-1 Engineering colleges, and both are equally sought after by JEE candidates. 

Even though both the institutes are equally renowned for their engineering degrees, here’s a comparison between them on the basis of rankings and placements-

• As per the NIRF 2023 Ranking, IIT KGP is 6th and IIT Roorkee is 5th among top engineering colleges in the country.
• As per QS World Ranking 2024 (University), IIT KGP is at 271st and IIT Roorkee is at 369th position.
• As per India Today Ranking (Engineering), IIT KGP is at 4th and IIT Roorkee is at 5th position.

As per the rankings and placement data, IIT KGP is slightly ahead of IIT Roorkee. However, both the institutions are highly regarded, especially in the field of engineering.

IIT Kharagpur does not offer Research Internships to outside students. 

But eight weeks of summer practical training (at the end of 3rd Year of B Tech / B.S, 4th Year of M Tech Dual Degree, 4th Year of 5 year Integrated MSc Course, 1st year of M.Tech) is a compulsory part of the curriculum at IIT Kharagpur, carrying 2/4 credits.

• The 2023 batch placement drive at IIT KGP concluded with 1600 offers, out of which, 45 were international offers. 
• The highest package offered during the 2023 placement drive was INR 2.6 CPA.
• The MBA placement 2023 had the highest CTC reaching INR 43.37 LPA, an average CTC of INR 22.13 LPA.

I am a second year BSc. Applied Geology student at IIT Kharagpur. The geology faculty at IITKGP are highly qualified and possess outstanding knowledge in their subject area.

The teachers in our department are very helpful, talented and student-friendly. They clear our doubts whenever needed. The best part about them is that they emphasise on practical learning and discussions in the classroom lectures. The Geology curriculum at IIT KGP is the best. Semester exams are difficult but it is easy if the student regularly attends classes and follows the professors’ advice.

Overall, the BSc Applied Geology faculty is quite good at IIT Kharagpur. 

Both IITS are well-reputed and provide the best knowledge to their students. However, if we 

look at the statistics, IIT Bombay is rated higher than IIT Kharagpur by various ranking authorities.

• As per the NIRF Ranking 2023, IIT Bombay is ranked 3rd and IIT Kharagpur is ranked 6th among top engineering colleges in India.
• In the QS Asia University Ranking 2023, IIT Bombay has recorded the 40th, and IIT Kharagpur has recorded the 61st position.
• In the QS World University Ranking 2023, IIT Bombay is at 172nd, and IIT Kharagpur is at 270th position.

Even though IIT Bombay is slightly ahead of IIT Kharagpur in terms of ranking and placements, both the institutions are ranked quite highly for their engineering courses. You can choose either of the two for your B.Tech and M.Tech studies.

The IIT Kharagpur LLM placements are quite good and most graduates find jobs in the Intellectual Property (IP) sector. The LLM placement report for 2024 hasn’t been released yet. 

According to the NIRF 2022 report, the median salary offered to LLM graduates was around INR 12 LPA. 

Although the latest placement data is yet to be released by IIT Kharagpur, the average package for BTech ECE students is around INR 28 LPA.

The executive MBA program offered by IIT Kharagpur is one of the best in the market. It is specially designed for senior and mid-career executives who want to progress in their careers, while also working full-time. It is a 3-year program, and for the first 2 years, regular classes are held on weekends. In the 3rd year, hands-on projects are offered for 3 terms.
