Why do alumni all say FMS Delhi is the most overrated B-school in India?

SJ
Sidhharth Jain Posted On : May 18th, 2023

Alumni who view FMS Delhi as the most overrated B-school in India have a limited perspective on the value of an MBA program. Some people view an MBA degree solely as a means to get a high-paying job, and thus prioritize finding a program with a high return on investment (ROI). But this calculation is not entirely accurate, because an MBA education provides benefits that extend beyond the initial job placement. The skills, knowledge, and experiences gained from an MBA program can shape your career trajectory for decades to come, such as in IIM-A where the campus life and activities play a significant role in shaping your growth and development. The relationships built during MBA programs can be invaluable to your career and personal life.

While you may have a higher student loan after attending a program like IIM-A or FMS Delhi, the long-term ROI can be higher thanks to the comprehensive education and formative experiences provided by the program.

What can someone with 6 CGPA do to better his chances of getting into one of the top IIMs or top B-schools like XLRI Jamshedpur, FMS Delhi, IIFT?

Firstly, you should focus on getting a very good score on the entrance exam as it is something that demonstrates your innate intelligence, which is a good indicator of your potential to succeed in the program.

Secondly, you should focus on scoring well in the GD/Essay portion of the admission process. This demonstrates your intellectual capacity and knowledge, which can also be important qualities for success in an MBA.

Thirdly, you should focus on other points in your engineering experience that showcase your interests and abilities such as hobbies, sports, books, or other extracurricular activities that you are passionate about. Discussing these during the interview can help to showcase your personality and unique qualities.

Lastly, you should be very clear on why they want to pursue an MBA and why they want to attend that specific college. This demonstrates your clarity of thought and future career aspirations, which can be appreciated by the admission committee and compensates for the low CGPA.

For FMS, you need to get 99+ for a call and at least 99.5 to convert because they give a lot of weightage on CAT Percentile (50%).

For MDI, you need 94+ to get a call with sectionals over 85+, and you need anything above 98+ to convert if you don't have any work experience.

With the new FMS criteria for the batch 2020, students from the OBC category who scored 93.xx and were on the first list. However, keep in mind that conversions with these borderline percentiles are exceedingly tough because you will have to perform exceptionally well in the GD-PI process.

As a result, for an OBC candidate, a score of 97+ may be deemed safe, as an above-average GD-PI combined with this CAT score may get you a seat in FMS.

Which is the best among IIM Lucknow, Kozhikode, FMS and MDI (mainly in terms of placement and learning)? Commerce background with good academic background and 3 years experience.

RS
Ratul Sinha Posted On : September 17th, 2021

Having read some reviews online about IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, FMS, and MDI, here are some things I got to know which might be useful to you.

  • IIM Lucknow and IIM Kozhikode both are older brands. They have a proper recruiter base, alumni network, campus life, infrastructure, and better placements.
  • FMS also offers low-cost and decent placement facilities, but students of FMS claim to have no campus life and any eventful experience.
  • MDI is considered to be decent. Thankfully they have a better and more happening campus life, unlike FMS. Bain Capability Network recruits at MDI while Bain & Co. go to the other mentioned colleges.

So the order of preference would be IIM Lucknow > IIM Kozhikode > FMS > MDI. This is as per the major rankings including Times B-School categorization. So select the one that matches most of your interests.

Which B-school is harder to get into when you have a 'mediocre' academic profile and 1 yr of work experience, FMS Delhi or IIM K, L, and I?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : May 23rd, 2023
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Among the above B-schools, FMS will be easier to enter because other IIMs like IIM K, IIM L, and IIM I give more weightage to past academic performance. FMS selection will be based on Personal Interviews, Group Discussions, and CAT scores.

IIM K gives 40% weightage while the initial shortlisting of candidates for Personal Interviews is contrary to IIM L and IIM Indore which gives only 20% weightage. IIM Indore gives no weightage to work experience where IIM K gives only 5% and IIM L gives 10% weightage.

All in all, if you are a mediocre student then you have to outperform others in terms of CAT score and PI/GD performance. Indore is home for freshers and competing here will be difficult but you should focus more on FMS then IIM L and then IIM K for your shortlisting and put your best foot forward and convert your calls.

All the best and Best of luck for your D-day.

I want to pursue my MBA from FMS Delhi. How can I do my specialization in marketing? Do I need to have prior work experience to lap up a high paying marketing job?

SJ
Sidhharth Jain Posted On : May 18th, 2023
Studied at FMS

Although prior work experience is not necessary to get a job after an MBA, it is desirable to recruiters. If you have work experience, then it will provide you with a little edge over the fresher crowd. If you don’t have then, it is totally fine. Many recruiters prefer fresher over a work experience person.

To do specialization in marketing, you have to complete your college first; then only you will be eligible to take specialization. Institutes do offer a choice to the students to opt for their desirable subjects, but the catch is the institute cannot provide all the subjects to all the students. There must be competition among the students to opt for trendy subjects. To get ahead of others, you must have to score well in your first year.
