B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

Some programming languages taught at IIT Bombay year-wise are

  • First year: One institute course on programming, in C++, simple assignments concerning file I/O, etc. One course on functional programming, in Scheme, assignments heavily based on recursion, tail-recursion, etc.
  • Second year: Data structures course, in C++, assignments based on data structures of course, like a heap, binary search tree, linked list, etc.
  • Third year: Operating systems, mainly C++, assignments related to Linux systems. Artificial intelligence.
  • Fourth year: There aren’t any compulsory courses left and you can choose one based on your preference.

Basically, you'll be taught C++ and maybe one functional programming language. Most of the courses are not exactly about programming but do have some programming assignments that will also be in C++.

Why do a very low number of core Civil Engineering companies come for placement at IIT-Bombay?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 21st, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

In core Civil-Engineering, the most important aspect is experience. Civil Engineering does not promote much research in comparison to CSE and EE which have research as the most important aspect. Hence, CR graduates are not considered of the same level as CSE and EE graduates. Another reason is that today, Civil Engineering is not in much demand and is considered to be an old profession in this fast-paced world.

So even if you are talented, you will have to invest a lot more effort in Civil Engineering to understand the necessary know-how. Companies hardly consider freshers in Civil Engineering and their pay is very less in comparison to an experienced Civil Engineer.

Because the primary focus is on experience, young Civil Engineers are offered lower packages in comparison to that of Electrical Engineers with the same experiences. In search of higher paying jobs, Civil engineers start looking for non-core jobs and core companies lose employees that had become talented and skilled after training in the company. To prevent this in the future, companies don’t prefer IITians who are overly ambitious and look for students from other institutes. This is why today there are many talented Non IITian engineers who became successful after gaining a lot of experience after working in core companies.

Why do toppers choose IIT-Bombay when IIT-Madras has been number 1 for quite some time?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 29th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

While academically, both institutes give tough competition to each other, there are certain minor aspects that distinguish them and make IIT Bombay a much more preferred choice than IIT Madras.

Climate: Although both Mumbai and Chennai are particularly known for their hot climate, IIT Bombay still has moderate climate conditions in November and December which are hot months in Chennai.

Food: Chennai has a limited variety of cuisines specializing mainly in South Indian food. The North Indian food is just average and for a better taste, you will have to go to an expensive restaurant. Mumbai on the other hand satisfies all taste buds from idli, vadas to Butter chicken. Even the fast food is much better than in Chennai.

Job opportunities: While both Mumbai and Chennai offer amazing job opportunities, Bombay definitely covers more sectors. IT and Automobile job opportunities are in abundance at IIT Madras. IIT Bombay being the commercial capital has opportunities in the corporate sector. It also has the biggest port nearby.

Cost of Living: Chennai is way cheaper than Mumbai in terms of food, restaurants, recreation, lodging, etc. However, traveling expenses are equal or cheaper in Mumbai.

Cleanliness: Chennai is cleaner than Mumbai and so is its seawater. Mumbai has a lot of slums which lowers the cleanliness factor a bit. New Bombay is however very clean.

Public transportation: Mumbai has better transport facilities than Chennai. In Chennai, buses are crowded but less crowded than trains. Taxis, trains, and the Metro are very expensive. In Mumbai, trains are more crowded than buses. Metro is the most preferred transport in Mumbai. Taxis and autos are limited but cost average.

Exploration: Chennai has many beaches, and male and movie tickets are also cheaper than in Mumbai. Mumbai has Juhu, Bandra, the Gateway of India, and many other famous spots. It has theme parks and pubs in plenty too.

In short, both IITs have their own strengths and weaknesses with IIT Bombay having a slightly higher advantage compared to Madras.

How did the IIT Bombay develop you as a person?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 21st, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

The answer is based on the experience of my sister who joined IIT Bombay to pursue her Masters. She was enthralled by the IIT Bombay infrastructure and culture. IIT Bombay has a lot to offer in terms of food, sports facilities, good classrooms, good professors. The thing that excited her the most was the research culture of which the institute is a flag bearer of. She got to interact with professors with excellent research papers and awards. The professors motivated her a lot and said that success at IIT Bombay Is possible only if your work is helpful for society.

This impacted my sister a lot and she started working on a project related to the petrochemical industry. The project guaranteed to save 100 Cr for a company in a year. She worked hard and conducted almost 300 experiments to get the final result. Surprisingly, she was awarded the best paper award in the Industry Applications category, and 41st National conference on Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power held at IIT Kanpur.

During her final day she had to complete her Masters' thesis and for this she selected a very tough professor for bher project to make it all the more challenging. The projects she chose were the most difficult but had the highest chances of getting a latent. Many peers advised her to reconsider but she was stubborn about it and amazingly enough she got the patent filed on 7th June 2017.

IIT Bombay helped her dream and achieve it.

IIT Bombay (2019)

As a full-time PhD student at IIT Bombay you can expect a fun filled experience and lots of knowledgeable opportunities.

The campus is beautiful with lush green scenery and is located in the heart of Mumbai, the city of dreams. In addition to that, the research facilities provided are top notch. Apart from these, you can expect

  • Working hours beyond 9-6
  • The ability to push harder with the publications.
  • Small social circles
  • Procedures like Funding Approval take more time because of the paperwork.
  • Seeing your batch mates from school etc. buying cars and getting married while you are working in a lab

All these things are okay if you are passionate about research as that passion will compensate for all the shortcomings.

What should I pack for IIT Bombay?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 21st, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

Most students while packing for their higher studies can think of common things like clothes, bags, footwear, watches etc. In reality, all you need is a few pairs of trousers and t- shirts and a sturdy floater.

Rather than materialistic things, you need to pack and prepare other things that will help you at IIT Bombay

  • Determination: Joining IIT Bombay Is a dream for many and since you have achieved it you should be determined to give your best and excel in every aspect. Nurture your abilities to the fullest and pave the way to success.
  • A pocket diary: It may sound backward but carrying a diary around is very useful. Note down what you learn new every day or the pending tasks.
  • A Family photo: This will keep you attached to your loved ones even if you are miles apart and will also serve as a reminder to talk to them daily.
  • Cycle: Yes, even inside the campus you will need a cycle to travel faster and save money.
  • Some homemade healthy food: This will keep you full and cater to untimely cravings.

Apart from these things you should also take some habits with you that will help you release stress from academics. These may be anything that makes you happy like dancing, reading, writing, coding, designing, drawing, sports, music, etc.

Which is better: civil engineering at IIT Bombay or electrical engineering at IIT Roorkee?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : April 13th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

In my opinion, the institute is more crucial than the branch as academics rarely matter for an IITian. What actually matters is how the college molded him from a fresher to a mentally stable and talented person who has honed his talents to the fullest through maximum exploration.

That being said, I would recommend you to go for IIT Bombay irrespective of the branch you are able to make it into.

  • IIT Bombay has its own legacy of being an IIT from the start whereas IIT Roorkee was a State University initially. Hence it is still undergoing changes. This eventually limits the opportunities offered to the students especially related to research work. At IIT Bombay many universities and R&D labs approach students for internships.
  • The rules for girls and boys are equal at IIT Bombay, unlike IIT Roorkee which discriminates between the 2 genders.
  • Because of its location, IIT Bombay, the finance capital is preferred over Roorkee.
  • The placements are better at IIT Bombay Civil than at IIT Roorkee Electrical, so need not worry about jobs.

Overall, IIT Bombay will give you a sense of freedom to explore everything and broaden your opportunities.
