Although the placement scenario is improving. Mostly IT firms and banks visit the placement drive.

Why are DASA students so overrated in NIT Calicut?

PR
Priti Roy Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

One of my cousins was in NIT, Calicut and he had amazing DASA friends and none of them are overrated. If anyone feels that way it may be because of the fancy English and accents.A few students do get in the limelight though. The most obvious of reasons is their communication abilities in the 'English', which most of the other fellow mates find amusing.

It is okay if we don’t focus on these gibberish facts and we progress ahead from these superficialities and value people for their talent instead.

As, the international reputation of colleges depends on the number of international students. So, DASA students help in increasing the ranking of colleges.

  • It would surprise one that they are not given discounts and scholarships.
  • This narrow mentality is the reason only three colleges from India rank in the top 100.

So, on the other hand, look for people, who really do significant work. But deep down the feeling you have in your own inability to gauge the fact that you are lending them this so-called aura and thinking of yourself to be less capable. You may think this is what it takes but think again. This overrated affair is quite hollow, I guess.

How good is the Electronics and Communication Department in NIT Calicut?

DS
Devesh Saraf Posted On : August 19th, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

ECE is one of the toughest departments of NIT Calicut. It stands right behind the CSE department for opening and closing ranks.

  • Academics- ECE is very strict for academics and has a difficult curriculum. There is a mandatory 80% attendance criteria. The teachers are highly experienced, but the teacher-student ratio is poor. The department has a shortage of permanent faculty.
  • Classes- Most students attend classes solely for attendance. Many just read the xerox/ photocopies of class notes as the questions are expected from those. If you like to do extra reading, this will discourage you.
  • Labs/ Practicals- . At the end of each lab, there is a practical lab exam/ project or both. Viva is conducted after each lab session. The lab exams are difficult and test your understanding and concept learning. Sometimes, you will have to run simulations before the actual experiment.
  • Examination - NIT Calicut has a continuous evaluation policy which means that every exam/ assignment has a weightage.
  • Assignments - Assignments and lab work are mostly done in groups. Assignments include running simulations, writing a code, tutorials and surprise tests.
  • Projects - There are labs, a mini project and a major project. Very few ECE students participate in research work or extra projects.
  • Placements - ECE students are mostly placed in software/ managerial positions. Very few end up in core jobs. This is because India has few core jobs in this field. Some end up preparing for higher studies (GRE/ GATE/ CAT).

Thus, the ECE department of NIT Calicut is very strict for academics and the placement scenario is not good for core profiles.

Should I prefer CSE at NIT Calicut or ECE at NIT Warangal?

AR

Lives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Choosing between CSE and ECE is a matter purely based on personal inclinations. While one branch may be good for you, it may not be for someone else, and vice versa.

However, in terms of both academics and placements, NIT Warangal clearly has the upper hand. NIT Warangal is among the top 3 NITs and is better than NIT Calicut in almost every aspect. Its laboratory facilities and faculty are among the best.

Particulars

NIT Calicut CSE

NIT Warangal ECE

Median CTC

Average CTC

Although NIT Calicut has an edge in terms of the highest CTC, NIT Warangal's average package beats it. Average packages are a better means of evaluating the placement scenario, and that being said, NIT Warangal is a better option.

Is mechanical or ECE better in NIT Calicut?

KS
Karan Solanki Posted On : August 20th, 2021
Studied at NIT Calicut (2019)

According to some of my friends studying at NIT Calicut, the ECE branch is better in placements than the Mechanical Engineering branch.

  • The placement greatly depends on the Aptitude and Academic record of the candidate.
  • The Teaching quality of both of these departments is not so good.
  • The candidate needs to work by themselves. The faculty might not be cooperative.
  • Other than just depending on library books, candidates can prepare by learning from the internet as per the syllabus.
  • It is important to know that the departments are very strict about their attendance policy. 80% attendance is mandatory for all students.
Categories ECE at NIT Calicut
Course Fee 5.42 lakhs
Placement Percentage 89%
Highest CTC 29 LPA
Average CTC 11 LPA
Recruiting Companies Infosys, TCS, Accenture, IBM, etc.

Only of the bright thing at NIT Calicut is that the exams are conducted only from the taught portions of the professors and not the whole syllabus. The course curriculum is a bit old and not current industry-oriented. The campus life, facilities and hostels are good. Students here have a decent college life with less extravaganza.

What has NIT Calicut taught you?

MR
Meghna Roy Posted On : April 11th, 2023
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2018)

NIT Calicut is committed to providing its students with a well-rounded education that equips them with the skills and knowledge required to excel in their chosen fields. Some of the key takeaways that students can expect to gain from studying at NIT Calicut include:

  • Attendance matters: Showing up regularly and maintaining good attendance can help you in many ways, from keeping up with coursework to building relationships with faculty and peers. Aim to maintain attendance above 80% as it can prove to be beneficial for your academic career.
  • Take risks: College is the perfect time to explore new things and take risks. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try things that you have no clue about, such as dance, drama, debate, or fancy dress. You never know what you might discover about yourself.
  • Value of labor: College life is not just about studying; it's also about contributing to the community. Whether it's lifting benches for a tech fest or coordinating events for a cultural fest, you will learn the value of labor and realize that everyone is a part of the puzzle, and one wouldn't work without the other.
  • Dealing with change: Towards the end of your college life, you may realize that things are going to change, and those happy carefree college days are gone. You will learn to deal with change and the growing up that comes along with it. This experience can be invaluable as you move on to the next phase of your life.
  • It's never too late: College is a time for exploration, and it's never too late (or early) to try new things. Whether it's participating in a free-for-all or exploring a new hobby, embrace the opportunities that college presents.

Studying at NIT Calicut also provides students with a strong foundation in technical skills, hands-on experience, research skills, professional development, and ethical values, which are all essential for a successful career in engineering, technology, or management.

What facilities are provided in the 1st year hostels at NIT Calicut NITC? Do each student get a table and lockable cupboard?

SK
Shailja Khandelwa Posted On : August 21st, 2023
B.Tech. from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

My brother was a student at NIT Calicut so I have information on the boy's hostel only. The first-year students are allocated to 2 hostels namely Hostel A and Hostel PG-1.

Hostel A

  • Triple Occupancy rooms.
  • Each room has one table and cupboards with locks per person.

Hostel PG-1

  • Very small rooms for 2 people.
  • The room has a single table only with no specific cupboards.

Hostel A seems to have better facilities than PG-. So if you get the second one, be ready to compromise on many things with your roommate.

Common facilities in both hostels

Here are a few common amenities that can be found in both the boys' hostel

  • A mess that serves food only to the first-year students. The food served here is average with more veg and less non-veg options.
  • Well-maintained and clean bathrooms and toilets.
  • The hostel rooms are lit adequately and have proper ventilation.
  • There is a smooth electricity supply with rarely any issues.
  • The hostel has no internet access.

Overall, the hostel facilities at NIT Calicut are like any other institute, average and tolerable.

How does it feel to be a non-Malayali in NIT Calicut?

AS
Abhilasha Shukla Posted On : March 25th, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Calicut

Even after studying for four years in this college, any student will ultimately miss the ground, hostels, teachers, fests, and most of all the friends. It might really hit hard thinking that the college days are over. In the end, it doesn’t actually matter whether you are Malayali or a non-Malayali in the college. You as a student should enjoy it completely.

There may be friends, who would crib so much about how awful the place is. But it didn’t feel so to many others. This may be because they get homesick and miss their homes and being far away from them. They should try being relished there. There are so many things to explore and learn.

Being far away there from the most secure place, makes the students realize how important their homes are to them.

You must not miss out on the fun. Ragam and Tathva are very organized in NIT Calicut. The nights are just amazing and to look forward to it. The nights are fun-filled with crowds and high-profile singers. There are various ‘on the spot’ events held.

There should not be any separation between the students but it is really tough because cultural, social, and lingual differences sometimes creep in. Despite these facts, everyone there is quite amicable to one another. There is not much of a problem as such. And it won’t even affect that much. The student should just get along well.

How are the hostels at NIT Calicut for freshers? What are some pictures of the hostel rooms?

DS
Devesh Saraf Posted On : August 21st, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

NIT Calicut first-year students are allotted 2 hostels namely

  • Hostel A: This room has 3 beds, cupboards, and tables. Although the rooms are triple occupancy, 4 students are made to stay together
  • PG-1 : This hostel has double occupancy rooms only although the rooms are smaller in size than Hostel A.

In my opinion, it's better to get Hostel A because the rooms are spacious and it has better facilities than PG-1. From what I have heard, PG-1 mess has better food than Hostel A but that does not really matter because you can change your mess after a few months. The internet facilities are poor and this matter needs to be taken care of. The restrictions are imposed on first-year students but from the second year, students are free to do as their will. Trust me hostel life is much more than comfortable beds and mess food. It's about the friends you make and the memories you create!
