Which is better: chemical engineering in BITS Pilani or mechanical engineering in PEC Chandigarh?
Choose what interests you. If you are interested in Chemical Engineering, BITS Pilani is a great option. It offers decent academics and exposure. Core Chemical companies and oil companies recruit from the institute. Schlumberger, ONGC, Reliance, etc. are among the major recruiters for the branch. BITS Pilani placement highlights show the average CTC to be around INR 12 LPA for Chemical Engineering.
But if you are interested in Mechanical Engineering, you should choose PEC Chandigarh.
What are some problems facing BITS, Pilani today, academic and otherwise? How do we find a solution?
According to my friend's personal experience, the biggest problem that is being faced in BITS, Pilani is that everyone has the same thinking and they go in that sync only. They want to be in one of the most prestigious engineering colleges just to get a decent CGPA, clear CGPA cut off for the placements, get a good placement and enjoy life afterward, which is pretty much boring.
All the students are not even aware of the various academic facilities that are being provided in the college. They aren't even aware of the fact that the library orders any book that a student desires through the library portal, which contains most of the famous journals including MIT Tech Review, Scientific American Harvard Business Review, and many others. The students focus more on salary rather than developing their overall personality and attitude towards the subjects they are studying.
My friend also feels that it will be better if the institute included some core subjects in the first year of the course instead of focusing on a generalized curriculum for all branches.
Some students also complain about the management and administration.
Bits Pilani Msc Maths and BE CSE Dual Degree Course or IIIT Bangalore iMtech CSE or IIIT Allahabad IT Btech? Which is better and why?
To begin with, the 5-year dual degree program at BITS is significantly more costly than the 5-year iMTech program at IIIT Bangalore, as well as the 4-year BTech program at IIIT Allahabad.
Second, there's no assurance that you'll get CSE at BITS Pilani if you don't have the required CGPA. So, it will be better to consider IIITA or IIITB.
I have a few friends at IIITB and based on what I heard from them, I will definitely recommend the institute.
The arguments in favor of IIIT B are as follows.
- No reservations policy as it ensures a good peer group.
- The faculties at the institute are great.
- The course structure is innovative. There are a variety of courses in the first year, including Calculus using C and Python programming, Algebra Linear, Data Structures and Algorithms: An Overview, Computer Networks with Digital Design.
- You have the choice of doing a six-month project plus a six-month industry internship in your fifth year or twelve months of study for your master's thesis.
- Good Placements: It has maintained a great placement record over the years. According to the recent placement highlights the highest and average CTC for the institute was 24.88 LPA and 43.31 LPA.
- Locational Advantage: Bangalore is definitely a much better location than Prayagraj. The climate is great. Air, road, and rail connections are all available. It is in close proximity to MNC offices and top-tier universities (IISc etc). It also offers the conveniences of a big city i.e. malls, restaurants, hospitals, etc.
I know several students in the iMTech program who have chosen IIITB over BITS Pilani CSE and BITS Goa, CSE.
Which should I prefer, electrical engineering at BITS Pilani, Pilani campus or CSE at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus?
According to my friends studying at BITS Pilani, you should go with CSE. As it has got quite higher packages and has a greater number of job opportunities.
- The campus hardly matters. You should pick your stream carefully, as it will determine your career.
- Check the faculty, alumni, and the scope your chosen stream offers.
- Due to the rapid growth of the corporate world and IT firms, there is a huge demand for CSE graduates.
- BITS overall provides a good curriculum as well as placement. Choose the branch you feel confident about.
There are many top companies that participate in the placement drives conducted by BITS Pilani. They include companies like Microsoft, Capgemini, Accenture, TCS, Cognizant, IBM, Mindtree, ZS Associates, HCL, HP, Morgan & Stanley, etc.
It is suggested that you go for CSE rather than electrical due to its huge demand and scope. But ultimately it is your decision to make.
What is the reputation of BITS Pilani in common public?
BITS Pilani is a more than 50-year-old institute. Yet it is not well known among the common public as that of the IITs. The various reasons for the same are as follows.
- Advertisement - Though IITs also do not advertise many top private universities do spend a good amount on advertising which is not the case with BITS Pilani.
- Location - Pilani is a very small town, in fact, smaller than an average Indian town.
- Campus - It has only 4 campuses; Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, and Dubai.
- Press Fascination - Our TV/print media (which most of the average Indian consumes more) always idolizes IITs and IIMs.
- General Perception - Government higher educational institutes have a higher trust in India among the general population.
But that does not make it bad. In fact, it is often considered at par with the. Here are some of the factors that make BITS such a great institute.
- No reservation -Though controversial, but without a reservation system BITS Pilani only takes students through merit. So, the student crowd at the institute is great.
- Academic Freedom - The institute has no attendance policy. You can create your own timetable system and also have an option to take dual degrees.
- It does not have a management quota unlike many private institutes and the university has international recognition.
So yes it may not be very well known as that of the IITs/IIMs among the common people but it has its own niche and the people who are well aware of the Indian higher education sector, certainly know about BITS.
Which is better: IIT Mandi CSE, Bits Pilani, or Pilani Campus CS?
This might be a hard choice. You have to think deeply and make a tough decision while choosing between any of these colleges.
IIT Mandi
- It is an IIT Brand for which you have worked hard and studied for around 2 years to be known as an IITian.
- All the faculty at IIT Mandi are themselves from IIT with a Ph.D. degree.
- The infrastructure of IIT Mandi is excellent.
- Also, the hostel life is quite good with a standard living lifestyle.
BITS Pilani
- It is one of the excellent colleges in India with developed culture and with a good environmental reputation
- The alumni are quite good
- Many reputed companies visit the campus for placement drives.
- The college provides a decent and a good salary average of 12 LPA, especially for the department of CSE.

Even if you intend to further research and hold the IIT tag, Mandi is a good alternative. Anyway, BITS is a decent choice, but for the rest of your life, you will miss the IIT tag. In the end, it will be your decision which college you want to opt for or go with.
How is programming taught in BITS Pilani?
One of my friends studied at BITS and according to him, the programming courses are generally very vast and need more time to be spent upon.
- At BITS, you will be provided with video lectures for it on an online portal.
- It provides you weekly tutorial classes and your Labs would be conducted to clear your doubts and evaluations are taken in Labs to test your knowledge.
- If you follow the schedule properly here, you can learn and clear your fundamentals quite well.
- In your 1st year, there will be common courses like computer programming. These will include Data Structure, UNIX, C Programming, etc.
- In your 2nd year, you will be introduced to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). This includes Java, Design patterns, etc.
- In your final year, you will get to learn about Shell Structure, Python, etc.
The faculty members teaching Computer Programming are also well experienced in their respective fields. They are supportive and cooperative. They have a huge role to play as they will be responsible for the development of the student and his knowledge about computer programming. Thus BITS Pilani has a very encouraging programming culture.
Do INTEL recruit from BITS Pilani Chemical engineering?
Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani offers amazing placements in other fields such as IT/CSE/ETC and others. But one of my friends studying chemical engineering there said he is quite uncertain about it.
Top-notch leading electronics companies such as Intel have their base in the USA with 40% of its engineers as chemical engineers. Intel in India does not have a lab in which chemical engineers work. They have desk work in India.
But if you pursue your higher studies and apply for a job in the USA then you might get selected in the USA.
What should I choose between Mechanical at BITS Pilani and Engineering Design at IIT Madras?
Engineering Design course offered at IIT Madras is a better option than BITS Pilani Mechanical Engineering. This program is a perfect combination of 60% Mechanical and 30% Electrical engineering. The curriculum is designed to suit the demands of the coming future in terms of developing a product from scratch.
ED from IIT Madras will provide better options for you in comparison to Mechanical at BITS Pilani. You can choose between
- Higher studies (or)
- Placements
Higher studies: IITs have a better brand name than BITS globally and thus the IIT tag will fetch you the best higher studies opportunities in top foreign universities. Despite being a new department, ED has alumni in very reputed colleges like MIT, Georgia Tech, etc.
Placements: In this aspect too, IIT sits way ahead of BITS as many top companies just visit IITs. Specifically speaking, IIT Madras has scored the best in comparison to other IITs in terms of placements. The placements statistics of the ED department of IIT Madras are next in level to CS and Electrical offering better placements than Mechanical, and Chemical in terms of the number of students placed as well as the average package offered.
For either of the options, ED from IIT Madras seems to be the better option than Mechanical from BITS Pilani, especially considering the double fees you will have to pay in BITS.
BITS Pilani CSE or IIT Roorkee Electrical or IIT Kharagpur MnC or IIT Bombay Civil. What should I opt for?
There is no right option as it all is a matter of preferences that varies from person to person. So the answer is generic and can be helpful for someone who hasn't yet decided on a branch. My preference order will go from the safest to the riskiest option.
- Safest option-IIT Bombay: Without any doubt, IIT Bombay is the safest option among the three. The brand value and tag are more than enough to remove any risks in your life. A majority of students chose IIT Bombay just for the tag and end up with Finance roles or go for MBA.
Pros
- The IIT Tag will help you get a higher salary and package than others
- You get more exposure to industries because of the locational advantage
Cons:
- Students who choose a branch for the IIT tag and not because of interest in it may end up regretting it later. This will affect your overall performance thus making you regret the decision.
- The second safest option-IIT Kharagpur MnC:
This branch is highly suitable for those interested in both CS and Mathematics. This option is safe in the sense that an average CGPA might get you a non-core job while a good CGPA then this branch has a high employment rate and will work in your favor. Its graduates are highly demanded today.
- Most Risky - BITS Pilani CSE: This option should be considered only if you are cent percent sure about CSE, else you will be stuck here. CS enthusiasts may find this option even better than IIT Bombay.
Pros: You get the chance to pursue the most coveted engineering branch at an extremely reputed institute.
Cons: You will suffer a lot if you are not able to meet the performance standards of the branch. Moreover, you will have no option to go for Finance roles or higher studies which most IITians who are unable to do well in their core branch do.
Thus we can conclude that being an IITian guarantee more success mainly because of the tag and the vast options available.
