Is it good to do Executive MBA from IIM Shillong being a mechanical engineer having 5 years of experience in manufacturing industry?

IIM Shillong is a decent option for an executive MBA. Having 5 years of experience will give you an edge. During IIM Shillong placement 2022, Manufacturing and Retail sectors offered around 19% of job offers.

However, institutes such as NITIE, Mumbai, or ISB Hyderabad will be better, for Manufacturing. NITIE Mumbai placements are excellent for Manufacturing. During the recent placement drive, the highest CTC offered from the manufacturing sector was INR 24 LPA.

Which is better recognised in the U.S. for job vacancies, IIM Shillong or Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai?

RA
Rishikesh Arora Posted On : February 13th, 2024
Studied MBA from IIM Amedabad

Majority US companies hire Indians for engineering roles, that too for IT sector jobs which we are best known for.

US people are good at management. So they seek technical experts from India. This is why the top performers of IITs get readily placed in IT jobs in the US for attractive salaries (more than 7 figures in rupees).

Whether you join an IIM or Great Lakes Institute, both receive a limited number of US offers during placement season. As for off campus placements, IIM Shillong and Great Lakes are both average institutes. So the chances of getting a US based offer are further reduced.

The best option is to either opt for an MBA in the US itself, or to work for big names in India for a couple of years. This will help you build a strong resume, and get noticed by recruiters abroad.

TISS at Mumbai is a famed institute. Why should a person opt for it? What career and personal goals one should set once he/she joins it? Is this a better choice compared to IIM Shillong?

Comparing TISS with renowned B-schools such as - XLRI (Jamshedpur), IIM (Shillong) will show that it is at par with them. TISS is one of the premier institutes in the Social sciences department. TISS, as a research institute is well equipped. The graduation degree is of standard quality as well, it will be worth your time and money.

At TISS, HR is not amongst the highlighted courses. It is Social Work and other public policy and development related courses that are at the forefront. HR, as a course, is parallel to the management side of the education TISS has included it in the course list. Apart from HR, TISS also has another management program which is the Social Entrepreneurship course.

Now, let’s sum up the plus points of TISS, as the best-selected option:

NAAC Accreditation

'A' (It has been rated as the best university for Social Sciences in India)

Faculty

Best HR faculty in India; Extremely helpful and encouraging professors.

Placement Percentage (2020)

80-90%

Highest CTC

INR 32LPA. (Its recruitment standards are equal to XLRI PMIR)

Average CTC

20.60 LPA

Recruiting Companies

KPMG, Urban Management Centre, Amazon, CitiBank, etc.

Best courses

HR; MPH; MHA

TISS, when it comes to HR, is definitely a more suitable option than IIM Shillong. However, a comparison cannot be set between the two colleges, in totality. Both of these educational institutes have different specialization courses. Therefore, a common leveling ground is absent.

These are the stand-out features of TISS but a comparison with the IIMs is not justified, as they both deal with different subject matters at different levels.

What are some fun things to do on the IIM Shillong campus as a fresher during or after class hours?

S
Sagardeep Posted On : June 15th, 2023
IIM Shillong

You’ve asked a very subjective question without giving much context so I’ll try to reason with you here and use a lot of ifs and thens.

  • The first few months on any campus would feel overwhelming with tonnes of submissions and no time for yourself. But once you’ve familiarized yourself with the routine you start to find things that suit your interests or find things that could help you groom yourself.
  • If you’re someone who likes being on your own and is looking for a moment of peace from the chaos and competition, you could apply for the non-academic clubs and committees at the campus.
  • Explore the campus and the local area around the campus. Go for a walk by yourself but again don’t forget the basics, be safe.
  • There are numerous mandatory events and conclaves organized by the different clubs and committees that nobody takes an interest in. Try to be mentally present in those events or make a habit of keeping notes for yourself in atleast 1 of every 3.
  • Start studying with different groups. Group study may not always bring the best results but it could teach you a thing or two.
  • Don’t forget to participate in case competitions and make submissions

Which one is better PGP-HRM MDI, MBA-core NMIMS, or IIM Shillong?

SJ

Analyst at DebriN Synergy (company) (2015–present)

If you're interested in PGP HRM, IIM Shillong is the best option in India in terms of placements. The average placement at MDI Gurgaon this year was INR 23.80 LPA, with a median package of INR 23.50 LPA and the highest package of INR 35.57 LPA. Top recruiters included Asian Paints, Infoedge India Limited, Axis Bank, Microsoft, Godrej, KPMG, HCL, Deloitte, Samsung, Google, Amazon, and Atlassian.

At NMIMS, Mumbai, the MBA HR program had an average salary of INR 19.40 L, with more than 180 companies participating. The highest salary this year was INR 57.65 L for the MBA Core program and INR 29.09 L for the HR cohort. Notable recruiters included EXL Acumen, J&J Quest, M&MI Rise for Good, PVMI - Make a dent, Reliance T.U.P, Godrej Loud, and more. IIM Shillong's 2022 placements drive saw 100% of students placed for the PGP 2020-22 batch. The highest package for IIM Shillong placements in 2022 was INR 55.22 LPA, while the average package offered was INR 23.10 LPA. PGP HR saw participation from companies like Bosch, D.E. Shaw, HSBC Bank, Mahindra Logistics, Paytm, and Titan, which offered prominent roles in various sectors.

IIM Shillong has a smaller batch size compared to NMIMS Mumbai and MDI Gurgaon. MDI Gurgaon and NMIMS have stronger industry and alumni connections compared to IIM Shillong, and they also benefit from their location. IIM Shillong has a strong brand value, but other than that, MDI Gurgaon is the best choice for MBA in HRM, followed by XLRI, IIM Ranchi, SCMHRD, and IMI Delhi.

Which one should one join for doing an MBA - MDI, NMIMS, SJMSOM (IITB), IIM Shillong, or new IIMs?

MDI will be a better option for all specializations, except Operations. If you are interested in Operations, IIT Bombay is much better. MDI Gurgaon placements are excellent. Big names such as Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and BCG have visited the campus placements. The 2022 placement drive had an average CTC of INR 26.65 LPA.

MDI offers the best placement in the finance domain after IIM A, B, C, FMS, and XLRI. JP, HSBC, Nomura, Stanchart, etc. are some of the major recruiters from the finance sector.

MDI placement records for Marketing are good as well. HUL, Coke, Pepsi, and P&G are some significant recruiters from the marketing sector.

What should be my preference between IIM Shillong & IIM Ranchi?

AJ
Arshit Jain Posted On : January 25th, 2023
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (Graduated 2018)

To compare two business schools objectively, it is important to consider more than just the numbers in placement reports. In addition to looking at the average CTC, it is also helpful to consider the median salary to get a better understanding of the context. It is possible that the average CTC may be significantly influenced by international offers or a small percentage of the batch securing high-paying jobs. When comparing the maximum and average packages offered, it is important to keep in mind that institutes often include international offers in these calculations.

In addition to the number of roles offered, it is important to consider the quality of the recruiters and brands. It may be helpful to look at the LinkedIn profiles of alumni to get a better understanding of the roles and companies that have been recruited from the school. It is also important to note that the same companies may be listed in the placement reports of different schools, but that does not necessarily mean that the roles and packages offered are the same.

Finally, it is important to remember that a business school education is about more than just placements, and what a student makes of their MBA experience is also important.

Should I take admission in IIM Shillong this year or prepare again next year?

AJ
Arshit Jain Posted On : January 27th, 2023

If you want to target ABC L, having a 70% BE may be a concern. However, it's important to consider your risk appetite and the rationale behind pursuing an MBA. Some people may choose to wait and apply to higher-ranked IIMs, while others may decide to take the risk and apply to a school like IIM Shillong. It's also worth considering that getting into a college with better rankings can be a great feeling, but you should also weigh the risk and return of your decision.

It might be helpful to consider the pros and cons of different options and try to get a bigger picture of your goals before making a decision. Keep in mind that some people with lower GMAT scores or undergraduate grades have been able to get into top schools like Kellogg's and Michigan, while others have been successful in technical fields without pursuing an MBA. Ultimately, it's important to consider your individual circumstances and make a decision that is right for you.
