How promising are the branches other than CSE in NIT Jamshedpur? I got metallurgy in NIT J and am really worried.

Studied at NIT Jamshedpur

I can completely understand your fear. I am an NIT Jamshedpur alumni from the Metallurgy branch, and here are some details about this course-

  1. Metallurgy has a lot of scope in the field of research.
  2. Some professors are really good and helpful. But don’t depend too much on them because you’ll have to do plenty of self-study.
  3. Metallurgy placements are good at NIT Jamshedpur. You’ll get opportunities for both, core and non-core jobs.
  4. Core companies like Vedanta Group, Tata Steel, JSW, JSL, etc. visit the campus with good CTC offers.
  5. Non-core companies offer high packages.
  6. Jamshedpur has plenty of steel companies. So you’ll find many of them visiting the campus during placements, offering good CTCs.
  7. You’ll get industrial exposure. The Metallurgy department organizes industrial visits.
  8. You’ll get the chance to do your projects/internships in renowned organizations like Tata Steel, Tata Motors and National Metallurgical Laboratory among others.

Work hard but also enjoy your B.Tech life to the fullest. Also, don’t worry, Metallurgy from NIT Jamshedpur is a good choice, especially for future prospects.

How do I get admission in NIT Jamshedpur?

VS
Vikram Sethi Posted On : April 22nd, 2021
M.Tech Civil Engineering & Geotechnical Engineering, NIT, Jamshedpur, graduated in 2018

A relative of mine who is an alumnus of NIT Jamshedpur and she has said that the institute is working on its boundaries to make them close. You can easily get into the premises of the institute. Even the locals do.

You will have to clear JEE to get into the Bachelors in technology. If you clear your GATE exams, you can get into M.Tech, PhD, and M.Sc. After you clear interviews, you can get jobs of technician, site engineer, etc.

Some requirements for admission are as follows:

  • Clear your JEE
  • Get a decent rank
  • Clear your CSAB JEE counseling
  • Fill choices, and make sure you have NIT Jamshedpur as your first priority. Pay your fee and get a payslip.
  • Produce required documents at NIT Jamshedpur and the fee slip.

It can be seen that JEE is very important for getting admission to NIT Jamshedpur. So clearing that exam with a decent rank is important.

Which is better, metallurgy in NIT Jamshedpur or IT in Jadavpur University?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 6th, 2023

Both Metallurgy at NIT Jamshedpur and IT at Jadavpur University seem to be good options so the choice really depends on your preferences. I hope you aren't someone who is obsessed with tags because, in the long run, the tag of your college does not even matter. Moreover, both NIT Jamshedpur and Jadavpur University have a considerably good reputation in the industry. However, it's true that Nit Jamshedpur metallurgy placements are slightly better than JU metallurgy placements because of their favorable location. JU IT placements are decent too with many 20_ LPA offers. Here is why I will suggest you go for JU IT instead of NIT Jamshedpur Metallurgy

  • Metal processing units are not very favorable working places if you are considering getting employed after graduation.
  • JU has a good record of students opting for higher studies from all departments every year.
  • JU is ranked 6th in India in research after IISC and other top IITs. Its professors have collaborations with foreign universities and their Letters of Recommendation carry great value.
  • Location-ise Kolkata is a much better place than Jamshedpur.

Additionally, consider the following table before making the final choice.

INR 14 LPA

-

Average CTC

INR 9.42 LPA

One of my cousins was in a similar dilemma when she got selected for both Civil at NIT Jamshedpur and CSE at IIIT Ranchi. S he decided to go for NIT Jamshedpur as she had no interest in the IT sector at all. S he wanted a core branch and NIT Jamshedpur seemed to be her best choice. Moreover, its Civil branch placements are considered to be at par with the top NITs. In your case too, it's best to focus on your interests and future prospects to make a healthy decision. If you have even a slight interest in the IT sector, choose IIIT Ranchi because its CSE is way better than NIT Jamshedpur CSE.

Here is a brief overview of both the institutes'

NIT Jamshedpur does not release the branch-wise recruiters so it’s difficult to determine the number of companies that visit NIT Jamshedpur for EEE specifically. The placements this year though witnessed major recruiters like

  • Amazon
  • UHG
  • Apple
  • Oracle
  • L&T, BPCL
  • HPCL
  • Afcons
  • Adobe
  • Maruti Suzuki
  • Hero Motocorp
  • Honeywell
  • ZS Associates
  • EXL Service
  • Capgemini

A few past recruiters that my friends in EEE told me about are JSW Bellary , Bhushan Power & Steel, Tata Steel P&D, Burohappold, Boeing India Pvt ltd.

Hope the information helps you!

Is there any dress code at NIT Jamshedpur?

BR
Barsha Roy Posted On : April 26th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur (2021)

The moment you enter the college and attend classes initially, chances are that you may come across certain seniors from 2nd year who might lecture you. It would mostly be about how you should avail NIT buses/wear formals/regularly attending the library and so on.

  • The best solution is to hear whatever they've got to say and not act on them. Until and unless you receive an official announcement/notice from the college, do not buy whatever the seniors have to say. Simply attend your classes in casual clothing.
  • Your seniors would try to make fun of you in front of the entire class, they might call you to visit them in their hostel. You might receive regular threats from them as well.
  • To tackle all of this, it would be great if you are pretty upfront about it. Tell them you're not someone who would buy whatever they sell.
  • And if things get worse and come to ragging, you can always file an FIR against them as a junior.

Talking about rules at NIT Jamshedpur, you must understand that following every rule is not that necessary. Acknowledge what has to be followed and once you spend a month or two, you will get an idea yourself. In case you are still a bit skeptical, feel free to check out the instruction and rules that the college follows on its website.

Which is better, NIT Jamshedpur for ECE or NIT Warangal for Chemical?

Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : September 1st, 2023

The answer depends on what is more important for you - the college or the course.

NIT Warangal is overall ahead of NIT Jamshedpur in many respects. NIT Warangal offers better facilities, better academic infrastructure, and more opportunities. The academic infrastructure of NIT Jamshedpur isn’t that good, and the labs contain outdated equipment.

But if you have an interest in a particular branch, go for it, regardless of which institute you get.

Here are the placement stats for NIT Warangal Chemical and NIT Jamshedpur ECE Placements 2023:

Course

NIT Warangal

Chemical

NIT Jamshedpur ECE

Placement %

91.6%

100%

Average CTC

INR 14.8 LPA

INR 22.03 LPA

Median CTC

INR 11.77 LPA

-

Placement-wise, NIT Jamshedpur ECE has better statistics. But if you have an interest in your branch, you will definitely get good placements.

Thus, for better facilities, go to NIT Warangal. But if ECE is what interests you, NIT Jamshedpur will provide you with good placement offers in this branch.

Why isn’t NIT Jamshedpur even in the top hundredth rank as per the list provided by MHRD?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : September 1st, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

There are several criteria on which MHRD ranks Engineering colleges/ universities.

According to me, NIT Jamshedpur lacks good academic infrastructure. This is one of the main hindrances in its path to glory. The teacher-student ratio isn’t that good. For a course like B.Tech CSE, the staff strength is not even one-fourth of the student population. By staff I also mean the Associate Professors, Ad Hoc faculties, Lab Assistants and clerks.

But NIT Jamshedpur has a good placement record. The academics of this institution are top-notch. It has given some of the best brains to this country.

There are several other criteria for NIRF rankings. NIT Jamshedpur lags in some of them but performs well in others. It did rank in the top 100 Engineering colleges in NIRF Rankings, a few years back.

NIT Jamshedpur has its own strengths. You should definitely visit the campus and talk to some seniors/alumni. Do not base your opinion strictly on rankings.

Which is a better course to pursue at NIT Jamshedpur: civil engineering or metallurgy?

SD
Sumona Dasgupta Posted On : September 1st, 2023
Bachelors of technology at National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur

I will first give you a brief about each. Civil deals with building houses, bridges etc. Metallurgy deals with building high quality metals which are then used in houses, bridges, cars etc.

I’ll compare these two at NIT Jamshedpur to help you with your decision-making-

  • Placements- As Jamshedpur is a TATA city, it has more metallurgical companies. These companies provide good internship opportunities to NIT Jamshedpur students. This in turn fetches companies from outside during placement season. Civil students usually prepare for GATE or other exams. There’s a high chance for you to get placed in a startup or IT company, in both the branches. If this suits you, prepare for those placements accordingly.
  • Professors - The civil department does not have a good faculty. In terms of faculty, Metallurgy is better.
  • Curriculum- Both the branches have a rich curriculum which is equally huge.
  • Events- Technica is the tech fest of the metallurgy department.
  • Stress-factor- Civil has a lot of classes. Civil students have to put in extra hard work with less core companies offering placements. This causes a lot of stress during the 4th year.
  • Gender Ratio- Metallurgy has a better boys to girls ratio.

I recommend you research both these branches and then make your decision. If you have interest in one of these, go for that branch. Other than that, as per me, the Metallurgy branch is better.

Should I leave my placement in Tata Steel from NIT Jamshedpur and go to Delhi for the GATE preparation and getting into PSUs?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : September 6th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Honestly, I wouldn’t suggest you forgo the offer from Tata Steel as it’s not everyone one gets to work in that prestigious company. In my opinion, I should try working there for at least a year and prepare for GATE also. You can go to the educational hubs, write mock exams, and give GATE in the coming year. If you manage to get a decent rank in GATE, you can resign and go for a PSU. But if you don’t then you will have a stable job already.

However, if you are very keen to get into a PSU, then resign from your current job and go to Delhi for full-time preparation. If you are to get a PSU well and good but if you don’t remember you have an experience of 1 year at Tata Steel that will help you.

Make a wise decision after considering all the factors!
