SMIMS Medical Seats 2021: National Medical Commission, NMC has recently approved more 50 medical admission seats for Sikkimese students at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS).
As per the official report, admission seats have been added to Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) for those students who have secured top scores in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
SMIMS MBBS Course 2021 admission seats will be reserved for only those students from Sikkim who have either reached top rank in NEET Examination. Those who meet the criteria will be eligible to apply for the admission seats.
While talking about NMC’s decision, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said, “Earlier, parents and guardians had to pay around Rs 16-17 lakh annually, which amounted to around Rs 1 crore by the time their wards completed the MBBS course”.
“Many of the deserving candidates had to drop out due to the high fees. But now, the state government will sponsor the education of the 50 selected students” he added.
On Saturday, November 28, 2021, the officials stated that recently added 50 admission seats will be offered to students free of cost, and expenses of the same will be covered by the state government for selected students.
With this decision of NMC, the number of reserved seats at SMIMS has now been increased under the state quota to 80. Earlier, the state had a total of 30 reserved admission seats for eligible students.
Referring to the decision of NMC, the Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang stated that this decision is one of the "big achievements" of the state. An MoU for the same has also been signed between the Sikkim Government and SMIMS.
He further added that after years of effort of the Sikkim Government to offer admission seats to weaker category students will now benefit students in the state. With this opportunity, the students from financially weaker backgrounds will receive various benefits.
