New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Ministry of Education released a new draft for the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 on April 06, 2023. The draft suggests various changes for board exams, including introducing a semester system for class 12th students.
Following the NCF 2023 Draft, students of class 12th and class 11th will have the choice to design their own courses. Other recommendations include modifying class 10th and class 12th board examinations and changing the structure from 10+2 to 5+3+3+4 for students.
It emphasizes the development of students' perspectives in various areas and suggests changes in course curriculum, teaching methods and course options. The method of teaching will include approaches at the foundational, preparatory, middle and secondary levels.
Informing about the changes in curriculum, NEP 2023 Draft reads, “The curricular and pedagogical structure and the curricular framework for school education will therefore be guided by a 5+3+3+4 design, consisting of various stages".
"It includes Foundational Stage (in two parts, that is, 3 years of Anganwadi/pre-school + 2 years in primary school in Grades 1-2; both together covering ages 3-8), Preparatory Stage (Grades 3-5, covering ages 8-11), Middle Stage (Grades 6-8, covering ages 11-14), and Secondary Stage (Grades 9-12 in two phases, i.e., 9 and 10 in the first and 11 and 12 in the second, covering ages 14-18)", it added.
According to the draft, students of class 11th and class 12th will have choices-based courses in their curriculum. They will have the option to design their courses based on their interest within the curriculum to ensure deeper and more rigorous engagement.
In addition to this, students of class 12th will have to complete 16 choice-based courses to finish their grades. The curriculum will be divided into semesters and each course and its multiple disciplines would be for a semester. Furthermore, the board exams will be held twice a year.
The draft reads, “The National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF) is developed based on the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and to enable its implementation”.
“The NCF addresses education for the age group 3 to 18 years, across the entire range of diverse institutions in India. This is across the four Stages in the 5+3+3+4 Curricular and Pedagogical restructuring of School Education as envisioned in NEP 2020”, it added.
