New Delhi: The Education Minister's announcement to give 50:50 weightage to CET and Class 12th marks for UG course admission is receiving mixed reactions. Students are seeking clarity on how equal admission opportunities will be offered to students from the different exam boards.
Opposing the decision of Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant to give Equal weightage to CET and Class 12th marks for UG admission, students stated that it will only increase their academic pressure as they will have to do well in different examinations
As per the students, they will have to prepare for class 12th board exams, as well as CET and Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for securing admission seats in colleges from the next academic session 2022-23.
Expressing concerns over the decision of the Education Minister, a student said, "By focussing only on entrance exams, the government was sparing us the stress of scoring very well in all exams but now, we will have no choice but to spend the next one year only studying and not doing anything else".
On the other hand, few associations welcome the decision by stating that the new admission criteria will help those students who are unable to pay for high fees of private classes to prepare for entrance examinations such as MHT CET, JEE, etc.
Adding to the statement, Ramdas Zol, president of the Association of the Management of Unaided Institutes in Rural Areas said, “We welcome this decision of the state government to give a fair chance to students, especially from rural areas, to get admission in good colleges".
The mixed reactions came after Education Minister, Uday Samant announced the new criteria for admission to engineering, pharmacy, agricultural, and other UG courses, which will consider both CET and Class 12th marks to prepare the final merit list for the academic session 2023-24.
“After a discussion with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, it has been decided that now equal weightage will be given to the CET marks and 12-grade marks. This will help students in building a good base with 12-grade studies,” Uday Samant said.
Informing about the decision, Vasant Kalpande, Education Expert and Former Chairperson of MSBSHSE stated that the decision to make changes in Maharashtra UG Admission 2023 Criteria is taken to ensure that students will take their class 12th exam seriously.
As of now, admission to UG courses in Maharashtra is done on the basis of a student's performance in the Common Entrance Examination (CET). Class 12th marks are only considered to ensure the eligibility of applicants to appear for the entrance examination.
