JEE, NEET 2021 Exams to be Conducted in Odia; State Govt to Develop Study Material in Vernaculars


Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Odia has decided to conduct national level tests in the regional language to promote Odia in the long run. Odia Centre also assures that as the craze for English goes down, inter-state Odia medium schools will get back their lost glory.

Moreover, Odia experts welcomed the Centre’s decision to conduct national level exams such as JEE Main 2021, NEET, etc. in the Odia language. According to experts, sometimes brilliant students have difficulty in coping with the transition from English to Odia affecting their career.

Centre is also focusing on developing study materials in the Odia language for better learning and preparing students for national level entrance tests.

An Odia language researcher, Subrat Prusty stated that Odia medium students struggle to comprehend and understand the language during national level exams. 

On the other hand, English medium students can easily understand the exam language as they acquire such knowledge in HSC. Subrat Prusty has also spearheaded movements to bring Odia language in national level tests. 

He further said if Odia medium students appear at the national level entrance exam in their regional language, they will be able to achieve more marks as it will be easy for them to comprehend the questions.

A class 12th student, Saswat Mohanty said that the question paper of NEET 2021, JEE, or other national level entrance exams will be easy to understand if exam paper consists of both English and Odia language. Hence, there are chances of scoring better marks.

Saswat Mohanty further added, “But for this, the preparation should be in Odia or any regional language.”

Odia language lovers have previously attempted many times to provide coaching in Odia Language. Besides, they also developed study materials for NEET in Odia medium. But due to lack of awareness, not many students have joined or supported the Centre’s efforts.

Dr. Debashis Jethy, a Physician and language lover said that if students have completed their higher studies in Odia medium, it will be much easier to comprehend any scientific concept in Odia than in the English language.

He had also made an attempt to develop study materials in Odia language but was not able to complete it due to various reasons.

Dr. Jethy added, “With some help from like-minded people I have planned to provide this support to Odia students soon.”

Moreover, the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Odia feels the requirement of more Odia experts to create extensive study material for national level examinations.

Basant Panda, Director of the Centre feels that even so there is a huge demand to develop Odia language and use it as a working language. But, there is no availability of adequate Odia medium study material.

He said that to help in Odia language’s growth and make it workable and usable, teachers and experts will have to be prepared for the same. Only writing stories and literature will not create much difference in the development of Odia language.
