IIT Patna PhD Candidates Selected for Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship


New Delhi: Nine research scholars from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna have received the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) for the May 2022 cycle. Selected research researchers will be awarded fellowships and research contingency grants as part of the programme.

As per IIT Patna, two students each from the departments of chemistry, computer science, and physics make up the nine shortlisted research scholars. The other three applicants are from the departments of mathematics, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Out of nine scholars, six are female students.

The PhD researchers who won the fellowship and are presently engaged in interdisciplinary research and development at IIT Patna are Rashi Aditi Ranjan from mechanical engineering, Joydeb Saha from electrical and electronics engineering and Shruti Saxena from the computer science and engineering department.

Additionally, Subham Raj from computer science and engineering, Priyanka Sharma from mathematics, Maansi Aggarwal from chemistry, Arnab Patla from chemistry, Priyanka Dubey from physics and Priyanka Priyadarshani Samal from the physics department are among the shortlisted candidates.

The PMRF programme was introduced in the 2018–19 academic year. It chooses candidates through an exhaustive selection procedure conducted at the national level. Students pursuing PhD programmes in bachelor's in technology (BTech) or a course that is equivalent are eligible to apply for the program. 

Candidates must pass the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and have a degree with a minimum CGPA of 8 or an equivalent to be eligible for the PMRF scheme. Strong research proposals are required for selection, and publications in reputable journals and conferences are considered for selection. 

In addition to this, the candidate's research experience, publications, performance in international competitions, overall grades, and letters of recommendation are all taken into consideration during the selection process.

The amount given to scholars under the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) programme ranges from Rs 70,000 in their first year to a maximum of Rs 80,000 in their fifth year. Additionally, each shortlisted fellow will be qualified for an annual research grant of Rs. 2 lakh.
