New Delhi: The STEM Impact Award 2022 has been given to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur for its involvement in several technology transfer programmes. The STEM (society for technology management) annual summit was held in the India Habitat Center in New Delhi, and an awards ceremony honouring the institute took place there.

An innovative programme called the STEM Impact Award was launched in India to recognise the positive effects of technology transfer operations in academic and research institutions. IIT-K has received recognition for its socioeconomic contribution through the technological transfer of the "Bhu-Parikshak" portable soil testing tool.

In May 2022, the Bhu-Parkishak soil-testing gadget was introduced to the market after being created in 2021. This portable soil testing tool can determine the health of the soil in 90 seconds. With just five grammes of dry soil, the gadget can measure six crucial soil properties, including nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, organic carbon, clay content, and cation ion exchange capacity.

The awards praised the device's potential to revolutionise the Indian agricultural ecosystem and recognised the work of Jayant Kumar and his team from the chemical engineering department at IIT Kanpur. Reaching out to potential industrial partners to collaborate and share technical solutions to foster social and economic growth has been an active endeavour for IIT Kanpur.

The Bhu Parikshak mobile application makes the test results available with a unique ID, reducing time and providing farmers with correct information. "As a multidisciplinary institute, our efforts are focused in producing ideas that can have a long-lasting influence on the population," stated Abhay Karandikar, head of IIT Kanpur. Our scope of influence and outreach have grown in recent years as a result of our ongoing work on important issues of national importance and grassroots utility. This honour demonstrates how the R and D ecosystem at IIT Kanpur is expanding. We're honoured to have gotten this acknowledgment, and I applaud everyone involved in the ground-breaking development of the Bhu-Parikshak soil-testing tool.
